In the fourth installment of the Mission Impossible series, Ethan Hunt and a new team race against time to track down Hendricks, a dangerous terrorist who has gained access to Russian nuclear launch codes and is planning a strike on the United States. An attempt by the team to stop him at the Kremlin ends in a disaster, with an explosion causing severe damage to the Kremlin and the IMF being implicated in the bombing, forcing the President to invoke Ghost Protocol, under which the IMF is disavowed, and will be offered no help or backup in any form. Undaunted, Ethan and his team chase Hendricks to Dubai, and from there to Mumbai, but several spectacular action sequences later, they might still be too late to stop a disaster.
IMF agent Ethan Hunt, who's been out for sometime, is given another mission. He has to break into the Kremlin to obtain some information. He gets in but when he gets to where he is suppose to go, the information is not there. And at the same moment, in another part of the building someone kills some people and takes some sensitive material. He then taps into Ethan's frequency, pretending to be part of his team. Ethan then calls an abort and just as he was leaving, the Kremlin explodes. Ethan is knocked out and wakes up in a hospital handcuffed to a bed and questioned by a Russian agent who thinks he's responsible for what happened. Ethan escapes and calls the Secretary who meets him with an aide named Brandt. Ethan gives them a description of the man he thinks is responsible and is told he's a rogue scientist. Ethan is told that IMF is being shut down. And since he's wanted, he is told by the Secretary that he can either turn himself in or go out and find the man responsible. That's when they're attacked by the Russian who thinks Ethan is the one responsible. The Secretary is killed, Ethan and Brandt escape and join two other agents and they set out to find the man and clear the IMF.
Like many action movie sequels, not much changes between movies except for the intensity of the action and a different story to continue the action from. Unfortunately, this means that most do not really have a great deal of originality in them.

Some parts of the movie were actually able to surprise me but the rest of the movie was quite easy to predict. I did enjoy the action scenes and the all those fights and explosions but honestly, you see such things in almost every action movie made.

In the entire movie, only one scene really astonished me because i never expected it. Other than that, the only differences are the tools they use and how they use them.

Characteristically like every other action movie however, there are certain parts of the movie that are totally unrealistic and just absurd but that absurdity is what attracts us to such movies. This is a sort of movie that I would simply watch for the excitement of the action and also to "kill time". I've been watching all of the Tom Cruise "Mission Impossible" movies in preparation for "Rogue Nation", and I must say that "Ghost Protocol" is the best film of the franchise so far (having not seen "Rogue Nation" yet).

I'll admit that I am a fan of these movies and always have been. Episode 2 is the lone let down in the series, with the first and third movies both being fantastic. But "Ghost Protocol" just takes the series to a new level. This one really has some dynamic special effects, and it emulates the style of the third movie but manages to have an even more engaging and thrilling plot (although the script of Episode 3 is hard to beat).

That said, you really can't go wrong with "Ghost Protocol". Give it a shot if you haven't seen it! Left me with the feeling I've seen much of this before. It's not that I'd like something better, it's just that I'd like something new.
While on a mission to penetrate the Kremlin archives and obtain information about the identity of a terrorist known only as Cobalt, Impossible Missions Force (IMF) agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is implicated as the team leader in a plot to blow up the Kremlin, forcing the IMF to shut down. Invoking ghost protocol, Ethan and three other agents—Jane Carter (Paula Patton), Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg), and William Brandt (Jeremy Renner)—go rogue in an attempt to clear the IMF name and to find Cobalt, who has stolen Russian nuclear launch codes and is planning a strike on the United States. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol is the fourth movie in the Mission: Impossible series which is based on a TV series also titled Mission: Impossible (1966) that ran from 1966 to 1973. Writing credits for Ghost Protocol are attributed to American screenwriters Josh Applebaum and André Nemec. Ghost Protocol is preceded by Mission: Impossible (1996) (1996), Mission: Impossible II (2000) (2000), and Mission: Impossible III (2006) (2006), and followed by Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015) (2015). The ghost protocol is a black ops contingency that occurs when the IMF is completely shut down. Any agents still in the field operate at their own risk, without promise of extraction, support, or safehouses. Any work they are doing is unsanctioned and will be disavowed by United States government; the same as if an agent on a special mission is captured or killed. It's not fully explained. It's implied that at some point between this film and Mission: Impossible III, Ethan's wife was murdered. So, Ethan tracked down the six men responsible and killed them. The result of which had him sent to the Russian prison. However, at the end of the film we learn that Ethan's wife is alive and that her death was faked. So, it's likely the attack and subsequent murders of the six men supposedly responsible was all fabricated in order to get Ethan into the prison, possibly to gain intel from a prisoner. The mission was then aborted at the beginning of the film. Dubai is a city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) located on the southeast coast of the Persian Gulf. Mumbai is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra. Having successfully deactivated the missile, sending it harmlessly to the bottom of San Francisco Bay, Ethan is confronted by Russian agent Anatoly Sidorov (Vladimir Mashkov), who realizes now that Ethan and the IMF are innocent of the bombing of the Kremlin. Eight weeks later, as Ethan and Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) are sharing a beer together at Seattle's Pier 4, Luther gets called away for a mission in Kandahar, and Ethan is joined by Carter, Dunn, and Brandt. Ethan compliments them on a job well done and invites them to become members of his team. Carter and Dunn agree, but Brandt confesses that it was he who got Ethan's wife killed in Croatia. Ethan reveals that Julia is still alive. She survived the attack by the Serbians, and her faked "death" was actually used as a ruse to get Ethan into Rankow Prison where he was assigned to make contact with IMF informant Bogdan (Miraj Grbic). He assures Brandt that he was not responsible for protecting Julia, they shake hands, and Brandt accepts membership on the team. As Ethan gets up to leave, he sees Julia walking along the boardwalk and entering a latte shop. They smile at each other, and Julia gives him a slight wave. In the final scene, as Ethan walks away, he gets a call from the IMF briefing him on his next assignment, should he choose to accept it. It was previously assumed that Ving Rhames would be reprising his role as IMF operative Luther Stickell in Ghost Protocol. Rhames reportedly stated: "I may be doing something very small in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, but I will just say that the budget changed dramatically and I'll leave it at that." Thus, it can be assumed that the budget wasn't big enough to include Rhames to reprise his role as a major IMF character. Eminem's "Won't Back Down", featuring Pink. Yes. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol has select scenes filmed using IMAX cameras. IMAX cameras are the highest-resolution cinematographic cameras currently in existence, shooting at 16K to 18K (lines of resolution vertical), as opposed to the standard 2K to 4K. From the opening scene to the prison scene: (1) a flashback to the failed IMF operation, (2) opening credits, (3) the destruction of the Kremlin, (4) the tone-setting shots of Dubai, (5) Ethan climbing across the glass, trying to cut a hole in the window and falling but climbing up again, (6) Ethan running across the surface of the building, (7) the sandstorm chase sequence, and (8) the movie's climax.
