There exists an ancient manuscript still writing itself called the Lexicon. It supposedly tells of the coming of the Anti-Christ and happens to fall into the hands of an unsuspecting woman. Now, she is being pursued by angels intent on obtaining the information from the book.
In Bucharest, tormented detective Dani Simionescu partners up with Interpol agent John Riegert to investigate several bizarre deaths where the hearts of victims were torn out. As they search, church clerk Allison finds her priest dead and his mysterious bible - "The Prophet Lexicon" - where the last unfinished chapter about the apocalypse, called Revelations, continually writes itself. The voice of an angel, called Simon, advises her to protect this bible from a demon named Belial who wants to read its final chapter and gain advantages in the war of angels.
Upon the death of a priest, a church worker named Allison (Wuhrer) discovers an old bible known as the Lexicon. An angel named Simon (London) tells her that she is the keeper of it now and the final book Revelations is writing itself. With the very fate of humanity hanging in the balance she teams up with a rough detective (Pertwee) and an Interpol agent (Light) who may be hiding something. Someone is killing angles all over town by ripping their hearts out and the Bucharest location helps with some atmosphere. Directed by Joel Soisson, this Christopher Walken-less fourth film in the franchise is a long way from the original. The cast is good and a few gory moments are sprinkled throughout, but 'Uprising' is just missing something in the entertainment department. The story line and actors should have given this a spark of energy that it just doesn't have. It moves from scene to scene without much life and the move feels dull even though the production values and cast is very good. Maybe it comes from the fact that this series really didn't need to continue.
It's true this movie has basically nothing to do with the previous ones in the series, but it is still quite good.

The only ties to the previous Prophecy movies is a brief internet chat with someone who might be Joseph, the angel Simon, (we are supposing it is the same one who died in the first movie even though we saw his heart ripped out, and the black void where eyes should be. Of course there is the war between angels and the monkey references but in truth this could be an entirely separate film and might have done better if it were.

Kari Wuhrer was fantastic. The new Satan while perhaps less evil feeling than Vito's is more charismatic and comes across as sincere, the essence of the devil as the greatest lier of all. The acting was by and large good, the scenery lovely and striking, the story rich and engaging.

If you are looking for Gabriel and the other angels, they aren't here. Other than Simon, this one is about devils instead, but it really delivers in all the areas that matter. There is very minimal gore, quite a bit of bad language, no comedy to break the mood, and one or two disturbing scenes.

If you like movies such as The Omen, The Rite, Perfect Creatures, and The Exorcist give this one a chance.
