In the distant technological future, civilization has reached its ultimate Net-based form. An "infection" in the past caused the automated systems to spiral out of order, resulting in a multi-leveled city structure that replicates itself infinitely in all directions. Now humanity has lost access to the city's controls, and is hunted down and purged by the defense system known as the Safeguard. In a tiny corner of the city, a little enclave known as the Electro-Fishers is facing eventual extinction, trapped between the threat of the Safeguard and dwindling food supplies. A girl named Zuru goes on a journey to find food for her village, only to inadvertently cause doom when an observation tower senses her and summons a Safeguard pack to eliminate the threat. With her companions dead and all escape routes blocked, the only thing that can save her now is the sudden arrival of Kiri the Wanderer, on his quest for the Net Terminal Genes, the key to restoring order to the world.
In the distant future, humans are declared "illegal residents" and hunted to near extinction by murderous robots. One day, a group of human scavengers come across a strange man named Killy, who may be the key to humanity's survival.
Oh boy. As a long-time fan of Nihei's manga, I have been dying to see the Netflix anime adaption. It is not a bad movie, but it might be disappointing for fans of the original work.

To start positively, the animation is great, the character and world designs are spot-on, and the action is awesome. This movie LOOKS the way it should, which is really its strongest point. Past that, though, it just doesn't capture the insanity of the manga, and resorts to endless clichés that are just unnecessary in a Blame! movie.

The opening sequence was great and immediately drew me in After that, we get to sit through an HOUR of exposition and walking. Literally, an hour. The manga would have maybe ten words in an entire chapter and still keep your attention, as it told its story through actions, events, and interactions rather than extended dialogue. This is honestly the biggest sin the movie committed, having its characters standing around telling each other stuff that should already be common sense to them.

I guess the pacing is its weakest point, because once the action kicks back in, its great, and the final fight is worth watching for. However, don't feel bad fast- forwarding through the tedious parts, because they really do go on forever about nothing. If they had broken up the conversations a bit more with some action or even a chance of scenery, it would have benefited greatly. Instead, it makes getting to the good parts a chore, which is a shame.

If you've never heard of Blame! you should enjoy this movie, but if you're a fan of the originals don't get too excited. This is an "accessible" version that removes all the mystery, intrigue, and viciousness of the manga and replaces it with classroom lecturing, locker-room shower talk, and clichés aplenty. The result is a pretty but watered-down version of one of my favorite stories, but the fact that it's Blame! is enough to keep it from being bad. The manga is honestly Nihei's best work to date and it deserves way more recognition, and hopefully an improved sequel. When I first heard about this, I read comments like "This is the best post-apocalyptic anime ever" so naturally I was excited only to be very disappointed (as is usually the case).

My main complaints are the under-developed characters, the music which seems to loop too often and the characters saying character names way-way too often. Silence is better, we get it, we're not dumb.

I am aware there is a manga and I never read it but this is supposed to be a stand alone movie and even during the intro we don't quite understand what exactly happened. A minute or two more of explanation would have fixed it. The story is pretty slow, only except during the fight sequences but even then after being told to "Run", they stand around for a good five seconds doing absolutely nothing and then run. It feels very unnatural just as is saying character names when alone, this is a virus from older animes and I thought it went away but nope.

The film leaves so many things unexplained and I just feel they should have worked on the structure much more, it feels like a trainwreck. So my guess is, they left so much stuff open because they want people to get the manga which is a common strategy these days to sell more stuff. Sadly the movie had so many unanswered questions that I don't really want to check the manga. If they explained at least 40% of the things, I may check the manga out but here it felt the film explains less than 5% of what's going on and that's too steep a mountain to climb.

Overall an interesting project which could have been so much better and instead leaves you disappointed and puzzled.
