Jason and Alexandra 'Alex', a close couple, lose their sail yacht in a storm and are grateful to get picked up by Captain Jim Bigelow's commercial carrier. Suspicious about the rough treatment and injections given by ship's doctor Gerbac which make the strong man faint, and realizing the ship is improbably empty and the radio not broken as the crew claims, Jason starts snooping around and finds human bodies on meat hooks, but even Alex thinks he's just hallucinating. Alas while sane Jason is restrained for his 'paranoia', the real madmen are the doc's genetic experiment outfit, who abuse their human captives as live incubators for a giant spider's eggs...
Having seen the first Spiders film, I wasn't expecting an intelligent plot or an involved storyline. The story, such as it is, involves a ship which contains more out-sized arachnids which are soon devouring people. The first half of this film is quite amazingly tedious, with very little happening, but as soon as villains - both arachnid and human - go into action, things start to move. Whether or not you find this film frightening presumably depends on how you feel about spiders. Personally I thought it was great fun, an action-girl fighting her way through baddies and comic-looking giant spiders. If you're a fan of monster-stompers this is worth a look, but just don't take it too seriously.
This is the story of a husband and wife (played by Greg Cromer and Stephanie Niznik) who are shipwrecked and rescued by another ship. Once aboard, the ship's doctor gives the husband some drugs because he isn't feeling well, and as far as his wife knows, he seems to start suffering from hallucinations. The ship's captain (played by Daniel Quinn) is very nice to the couple, but there just seems to be something a bit spooky about the whole thing. As the film goes on, everyone watching will figure out that the Captain has the hots for Niznik's character (everyone except her), and the crazy stories the husband is telling turn out to be true. Yup, there are giant spiders on board!

I though the acting was really good in this, especially Niznik, who brought some actual depth to her character. That's unheard of in a giant spider movie. Quinn did a fair job as the Captain, always nice but in a creepy way. And that guy from Night Court who played the mad scientist really had fun with his character.

There was quite a bit of suspense throughout the first two-thirds of the movie, which I think worked very well, especially with such good interaction between the characters. Unfortunately the ending was completely by-the-numbers, and suffered from some pretty funny special effects. Although there were a few moments that were excellent, like when the giant spider was crawling around on the sides of shipping containers chasing Niznik, there were plenty of effects that just produced chuckles. This could have been a great B movie if they'd just done a rewrite on the last couple pages of the screenplay. I mean, the movie was rather original, why stick such a completely stock ending on it?

Overall, even with the predictable ending and sub-par effects, I found it to be well worth the time to watch. And Niznik is really nice to look at.
