It was a grave and ordered and passionless life that awaited him, a life without material cares. On a certain Tuesday the course of his triumphs was rudely broken. On the removal of the tea things I had blown out the candles and drawn my chair closer: I was conscious of a mortal coldness and felt as if I should never again be warm. It was lovely to be tired.
