About This Game

The year 2476, Earth's space-federation has been building moon-bases across the galaxy. One of those moon-bases has been sending a distress signal. Space Grunts are a group of intergalactic "problem" solvers, sent to investigate..

You play one, out of a team, of Space Grunts, and your mission is simple: find your way into the moon-base, and figure out what has happened. You'll have to fight your way through aliens, robots, security drones and base-systems. Find the lower levels of the moon-base, and get to the core of the problems.

Consumables - A large collection of consumables can be found all over the moon base from weapon enhancers, to destructive toys, armor, explosives, system-hacks, and more. Use the items wisely to advance deeper into the moon-base.

Weapons - Starting with three standard Grunt weapons, you will be able to enhance them for more fire-power and range. On your way you'll also find alternate weapons, and melee weapons.

Secrets - There are various ways to complete the game, anomalies leading to weird places, underground routes, and mysterious items to transport you to other area's of the moon-base. On top of these there are secret rooms and area's located all over the base, so never a dull moment!

    • The mouse pointer moves to the center of the screen every time I start the game. I play the game by keyboard or X-Box controller, so I have to move the mouse pointer out of game window when running in window mode.

    • My X-box controller cannot be detected in full-screen mode sometimes.

      So I've played 74 frustratingly fun minutes!
      I guess this is my early, early access review.
      
      I love the difficulty level, the balance is spot on. The randomly generated levels work perfectly, it's nice to see different layouts each time I play and the area sizes feel just right. Not too big or small.
      
      The turn based game-play adds even more value for me, I love being able to plan. It's so much better than just running around in a big mess of explosions and bullets like a lot of traditional rogue-likes.
      
      The variety of weapon upgrades, items, power ups and enemies that I've encountered are interesting and the addition of data cards makes it all that more interesting. My personal favourite item so far is the mine, I enjoy pacing about at distance and letting the enemy come to me, only to walk straight into my mine!
      
      The data cards seem to be rare, unless I've just been really unlucky. But this is the way it should stay I think, if they drop too often, it would feel like less of a reward when players find them.
      
      The pixel art is nice and bold, the music works for the settings, creates some nice atmosphere, coupled with really nice weapon sound effects.
      
      It's not very often that a rogue-like pulls me away from my work, which happens to be making games too. So from one developer to another, you've done an excellent job with the balance in Space Grunts.
      I'm looking forward to playing more!
      
      Keep up the solid work!. Doesn't feel like it has a lot to offer in terms of replayability ... after one or two failed attempts I felt like I'd seen everything the game had to offer, and it wasn't very intriguing.
      
      There just doesn't feel like there's a lot of depth to the game... having only one character to control instead of a whole squad makes things proceed in a fairly simple matter: walk up to dude, empty your clip, hope you don't die in the process. Repeat. Repeat. Sometimes you pick up things to help.
      
      How you manuever your character relative to enemies has very, very little effect on gameplay... if any. If you sneak up on a character who is facing away from you and fire your gun, well ... in that same instant, the enemy manages to spin a full 180 degrees and land a bullet in your chest armor, so positioning and manuevering in this game means nothing.
      
      Kudos for trying a simultaneous move/turn system, but the end result is that you have all the enemies moving the same speed as you, and most of them have the same range as you. The end result ends up being that once you're engaged in a fight, there is little-to-no hope of disengaging from the fight to set up a defensive position or do a tricky manuever on the enemy, or whatever ... you just both continually fire on each other, hoping that the enemy dies first.. I've really enjoyed this rougelike. Most of my playtime is on the Android version, but the Steam version (I played on Linux) is just as good. (I had a couple of issues with sound on 1.6.0, but that's all.)
      
      There's an extra element of resource management (with weapon ammunition at least) compared to what I'm used to with my limited rougelike experience, and it works pretty well; it encourages you to be consious about what you're using according to the situation. I have moments where I just run around blasting enemies, and moments where I have to stop and think my way out of a tight spot. It's pretty rewarding, and it keeps me coming back (even though I've yet to beat the game).
      
      If you're on the fence, maybe wait for a sale, but otherwise I think this is worth the $10 asking price.. well hello everyone i made a review of the game(didnt know the release would be so soon afterwards) so anyone who's on the fence of buying the game this is a simple turn based gmae but far from simple in difficulty and enjoyment hopefully the video is helpful

      . Quite a damn fine master piece gem of a game its like playing chess with aliens, and im not talking about xcom.... Really fun little roguelike. I enjoyed it so much I bought it on Android to play on the move, which is actually where I've spent most of my time playing. It's just the right level of 'deep' to be fun without being overwhelming.. DISCLAIMER: This game is a work in progress and I plan on spending more time with it. I will update this review as needed.
      
      Forgettable name aside, Space Grunts is actually a pretty interesting game. It plays like a hybrid of a turn based roguelike\/roguelite with the pace of an arcade game. The gameplay itself is pretty simple. When you move or shoot, enemies can do the same. There's no skip turn button, so you need to think a bit about how you're going to position your marine to deal with enemies. The gameplay loop is that you spawn into a level and you move room to room clearing out baddies. You start with three weapons: A shotgun, a railgun, and a frag grenade. As you progress through the levels, you'll find more items that mix things up. It's simple and fun. If you're a fan of roguelikes\/roguelites, give this a try. For $10, it's a good deal.
      
      Pros:
      - Easy to pick up.
      - Polished for an Early Access title.
      - Decent aesthetic and sounds.
      - Fast paced and fun gameplay.
      
      Cons:
      - Visually simple.
      - Not as deep or complex as the genres it draws from.. A very good idea, with medicore execution.
      When you play this game, you basically do this:
      move left - move right - move left - move right - hope an enemy jumped in front your barrel - shot - shot - shot - rinse and repeat.
      
      Very monotone.
      
      
      Basically, imagine a turn-based Nuclear Throne (literally, exactly that).
      - But with only 3 characters (a reskin with stat adjustments)
      - 3 types of weapons only (they upgrade though, but this only gives them more AoE or Damage)
      - A ton of imbalances
      - "features" in regards to gameplay / combat that you cant play around.
      
      As a small example:
      All monsters do their action after you do. This means you will regulary open up a door in a corridor, which will reveal a monster. Since your turn is done, the monster gets its turn and shots you for 1-3 damage (which is 5 to 15 % of your health). And there is no way at all to avoid this.
      Also, teleporting monsters, which again, teleport after your action. So even if take cover, the monster may just beam to a random spot that is not covered and damage you.
      Also, level generation is pretty wonky, the rooms are usually cluttered with boxes and enemies and there is really very little to move or manover. Considering its a turn-based game, but you cant really move well.....you get the idea.
      
      The only upside in this game is that you can pick up various "items" that wil give you a one-time boost, for example some more max health or a temporary boost to firepower. This is a nice spin, but again with inconsequential execution as the items are basically almost always tempoary powerup and they dont really make the game more interesting in regards to your choices (which usually boil down to this: move left - move right - left - right - unil the enemy is aligned with your gun - shot shot shot - left - right - left right)
      
      All in all, i rate this a generous 5/10. In my mind, not even close to being worth the asking price of 12 bucks.
      Considering its a mobile port, this should be like 3.99 ? maybe.

      Someone mentioned B-skins, and I loved that idea a lot so they are now added.. unlocking them isn't easy, will see if I can come up with some more hints or something for that.
      
      Also added your personal-best to the leaderboards which was another idea from the forums. Your current best isn't there, since the recording of your best runs starts now.
      
      Do make sure to leave your ideas and thoughts in the forums or on my twitter (@orangepascal or @orangepixel) I love getting good feedback and improve the game based on that..

      The nice image above basically shows my last 8 months of working on this game. We've come so far and we're not there just yet! ;)
      
      In today's update a lot of fixes to various small things. Some of those were bugs, others are part of the balancing that will now be done more often. The hardest part in game development is getting that right, but we'll get there.
      
      On yesterdays daily run I had my ass handed in level 2, but Aline managed to reach level 16 running into a bug causing the end-boss to be un-destroyable! That shouldn't happen anymore, my night on the couch made sure of that ;)
      
      There is also a "work in progress" save mode added to the game, basically it saves automatically after every completed level.. so if you have to step away from the game for a long time or a power-outage, it should be possible to continue the game at the last save point.. let me know if you run into problems with that! (if you die, or complete the game, or are in a daily-challenge, there will not be a save game)

      So what about the update.. well it's a MEGA BIG ONE!
      
      I fixed a lot of little bugs, including the stupid hack-key crash bug, the ducky bugs, and on top of all that managed to come up with a bunch of new ideas and features.
      
      You'll now have a nice level-progress bar, which will show you how close you got to completing the game. It's displayed at the start of your level, in the map screen, and on the game-over screen (making for some nice screenshots).
      
      I also added a bunch of new "rare" and pretty powerful items, with some achievements attached to them.
      
      Some experiments with camera-control for special events (I hope to have some interesting special events in future updates that use this) and just a lot of cool stuff.

      So today's update brings mostly a lot, and I mean a lot, of fixes and minor tweaks to the interface and also various stuff in the game.
      
      And one, often requested, feature is now added (slightly work in progress) and that's defining your own keys! For now it's just for keyboard, still needs some improvement, and I'll see what I can do for controllers, altho they are using a fairly basic layout already.
      
      The interface look has changed slightly, giving a more unified look for everything.

      It's a biggie today! A lot of the stuff I had on my list for ages has now been fixed and implemented, so I'm very happy with today's update.
      
      I'll probably be slowly pushing the update rate to once a week, since I'm closing in on a completed game (altho my todo-list is still a couple of pages long) this allows me to concentrate on getting some marketing and PR going, cause that's still a bit lacking ;/
      
      Anyway, the update:
      
      One of the cool stuff is the Flamethrower, a super-weapon like the Berzerker, which gives you the power of throwing some heat in a room (and then run to not get caught by the spreading fire).
      
      Another update is one requested a zillion times by Thotep: a remote-controlled drone. Not exactly how he described it, but trust me, it's fun to use! you can basically move the drone an X amount of steps, and then make it go BOOM! in a room full of baddies... again, try to stay safe while using it ;)
      
      I also crammed in some new items, one is the "space cube" which allows your inventory to grow (remember I mentioned that a few updates ago). This also made it possible for me to limit the Strongarm inventory starting space .. you get less store space with this guy ! so find those space cubes..
      
      Finally items like the luck-amulet, tech-manual, and space-cube are now all "instant usage" because there really is no point in having them in your inventory first.. (unlike bionics, which can be used as a full-regen when really needed).
