A staged kidnapping of the President of the United States becomes very real, forcing a lone hero to save the day.
The President of the United States, in the midst of negative puplic opinion, is kidnapped while attending a charity function. Initially, we discover that the kidnapping was planned by his chief of staff to boost his poll ratings as the reelection is one week away. However, one of the kidnappers decides the opportunity for gain is too strong and turns it into a real kidnapping. What he didn't expect is another member of his group to foil his plan.
If you watch a lot of Direct-To-Video flicks, The Company called Nu-Image pops up a lot. They make on-the-cheap knockoffs of "Die Hard" and monster flicks like "Octopus 2: River Of Fear" (A real title).

"The Alternate" is no exception. For the millionth time, John McClane...I mean "The Replacement" (Roberts) has to foil a plot to stop terrorists from killing the Prez. Michael Madsen plays the Reginald VelJohnson part as the agent on the ground. All he does is bark orders and waits to tuck into the craft service table. Bryan Genesse plays the terrorist leader. He's okay. Eric Roberts is his usual self as the hero. The action scenes are ripped off from "Die Hard" wholesale. The scene with Eric hanging on to a building, and the climax. I'm surprised there wasn't any stock footage. Ice-T pops up to make a cameo. He reads his lines off the cue card like the pro he is.

Sam Firstenberg is also the director of the Michael Dudikoff classic "American Ninja". How far the mighty have fallen...

Overall, "The Alternate" isn't bad, It was just written with no personality.

There are many reasons I liked this movie but the biggest is the battle that was waged between good (Eric Roberts) and evil (Bryan Genesse.) Adding to the excitement was Ice-T who for once was on the side of good, although he was not in the movie that long.

I would characterize this film to be among the best of direct to video because it had tension, drama, plot, action and suspense from the opening scene. Roberts and Genesse are both known for their real-life martial arts skills and they certainly utilized them in their duels with one another. It was a pleasure to see these two men hash it out because the fight sequences looked real.

What makes "The Alternate" that much better is the fact that it is directed by Genesse, who is a virtual unknown to the directing scene. He did such a great job in setting up each scene because it was done with care and precision.

It is too bad that these types of movies are not shown on the screens in theaters because they are too good to be seen direct to video. This movie has turned me on to other direct to video movies and I wish others enjoy these as much as I do.
