He has a wife and children somewhere. His childhood was dead or lost and with it his soul capable of simple joys and he was drifting amid life like the barren shell of the moon. On the removal of the tea things I had blown out the candles and drawn my chair closer: I was conscious of a mortal coldness and felt as if I should never again be warm.
