In an alternate Japan, territorial street gangs form opposing factions collectively known as the Tokyo Tribes. Merra, leader of the Wu-Ronz tribe of Bukuro joins forces with heavy hitting sadistic gangster Buppa of Buppa Town. With Buppa's support, Merra aims to initiate a gang war between the Wu-Ronz and the Musashino Saru, and in a confrontation between the two attempts to kill popular member of the Musashino Saru - Kai. By mistake, Merra instead kills Kai's friend Tera (a Musashino Saru member beloved by members of all Tribes since before their formation). This leads to the joining of forces between all of the Tokyo Tribes in an all out war against Merra and Buppa's forces.
Japanese Rap - a musical oxymoron. Neither cool nor funny. Just plain awkward and embarrassing. I sat there for 120 minutes trying to figure out what in gods name Sono was trying to do with this flick. Rapping ridiculously stupid (I don't want to call it) lyrics and all those naked chicks whose IQ would add up to 10 just gave me goosebumps. He just can't be serious! This movie is a bad joke. I was basically cringing throughout the whole film and felt a strong need to shower afterwards. Sonos cinema has always been misogynistic and blunt but this simply goes too far. If you're a Sono fan you can risk a glimpse but don't expect a creative and facetious ride like his latest work Jigoku has been.
the rapping parts were good, fighting scenes mostly good, had a good ending. There were some kind of lame parts but only maybe twenty percent. It was impressive how the Japanese rapping was rhyming and the English translations rhymed as well. Another part I thought was really cool was how this karate school-girl's panties would be showing during her high kicks. This movie was a little reminiscent of Crow's Nest Zero but this was superior. Five years after the Shibuya riots, the Tribes of Tokyo have been enjoying a period of relative peace, until Kim and two other members of the Musashino Saru intrude on the territory of the Wu-Ronz in Bukuro. Mera, the leader of Wu-Ronz kills the three Saru, under the assumption that they were members of the Shibuya Saru. Two days later, after searching for who killed his friends, Musashino Saru member Kai runs into Mera. Old friends in their high school days, the two get into a confrontation that ends up leaving Tera, the leader of Musashino Saru, dead and setting the stage for violence between the Tribes.
Sion Sono's film imagines gangs not as rebels without a cause, but a lost generation of displaced, poisoned youths.
