In China, the girl Kim witnesses the murder of her mother by her mobster father Sun Quan and escapes to Los Angeles in a vessel with other illegal immigrants. The ship is intercepted by the US Immigration Department, and the social worker Cynthia Archer decides to host Kim at her home with her husband, the bouncer Ben Archer, and their son Nicholas. Sun Quan comes to USA, and with the support of the dirty chief of Lisa, he gets the information where his daughter is and uses the Chinese triad to kill Cynthia and her Chinese stepparents in their restaurant in Chinatown. However, Nicholas and Kim escape from the killers, and Ben calls his friend to revenge the death of his beloved wife.
After his wife is brutally murdered, club enforcer Ben Archer wages war against the Chinese triads.

Wake of Death is one of my favorite Van Damme films alongside Until Death that came out 3 years after this movie and those 2 films showed that Jean Claude Van Damme can act because he gave a pretty good performance in here plus the film had some pretty good dramatic parts delivered by Van Damme and the rest of the cast gave some pretty good and solid performances, of course the action is non stop hardcore and thrilling and the Mall chase scene with the motorcycles was actually handled really well done. Also the movie has a pretty great soundtrack and the main theme was a mix of drama and western so i liked that as well. Overall Wake of Death (2004) is a great action film and for a straight to DVD movie it does have some pretty quality, acting and fight scenes and even if you're not a big fan of JCVD i think you are going to enjoy the hell out of this film.
This is a very different film for Vandamme and is definitely a big step forward for him. And I enjoyed this film a lot. I was very impressed with how vd improved his acting skill. I wouldn't wonder if he gets offered a big role in a Hollywood blockbuster film one day in near future. He made martial arts sensation back in late 1980s and early 1990s. I'd like him to come back on screen again... not only with action but with more dramatic elements well-executed in films like this Wake of Death.

Well, the first time I saw it, i thought it's a little bit more than average action flick with vd's better acting performance. but recently i viewed it again and i liked it even more than the first time. Vandamme has definitely enjoyed making this film... he seems very confident and more powerful with his performance. And the director did an awesome job. It's a film that all vandamme fans and action flick fans should check out... well I'm sure, by now, all his fans have watched it.

Well, I'm a big van damme fan, but I don't consider myself as his fan while watching films. I make fair judgement, based on how the film is executed cinematic ally... So, yeah , even tho I'm his fan, there are films i don't like ... such as Black Eagle ~~, Cyborg etc... Well Sooo, of course it all depends on your own decision after all. but my opinion is that i liked it and ppl would enjoy watching it too.
