I was confronted at last, as never yet, with all the risk attached even now to sounding my own horrid note. I was standing at the end of the South Terrace one day with some maneens like myself and sure we thought we were grand fellows because we had pipes stuck in the corners of our mouths. His eyes were dimmed with tears and, looking humbly up to heaven, he wept for the innocence he had lost. He hurried onwards as if to overtake it.
