First impression: fun casual jigsaw game

Just doing the puzzles by shape, with this amazing music, guessing what the picture is going to show, is joy.

I have been playing jigsaws since I was a kid, and have seen many good and bad jigsaw computer games, but none like this. The most important design decision in this game is to make only 5 spare pieces available, and to scale these down. This solves the problem that, on a conventional jigsaw puzzle, the spare pieces take up twice as much space as the actual puzzle -- and our screen just isn't as big as the table I used to do them on (and the really big ones needed the floor!). With this decision, the puzzle itself can be big, and be the main focus of the game. It is supported by not showing a preview picture (the picture on the "box"); you can see the target image on the level selection screen, but not when you are actually puzzling. In lieu of that, some pieces are already placed when you start. Also, the pieces are not rotated, making placing them as simple as dragging and dropping.

All of this adds up to a nice challenge, even when a puzzle only has 50-70 pieces. The game uses bonuses to scale the difficulty. Doing a puzzle earns coins; doing it again earns more coins; this means you can grind to be able to buy hints or unlock the next set, should you not be able to do them error-free. In relaxed mode, that's all there is to it; do 120 small puzzles. In timed mode, which is the default, you need to beat a timer, and the time is set so that you need to memorize a good bit of the puzzle, usually doing it several times until you can beat the time. This way, a puzzle set at 1:30 may take you 8 minutes until you're able to 3-star (well, 3-key) it. Note that this is entirely optional, but required to do all of the achievements. Beating all of the timers is likely to take well over 10 hours, while going through it in relaxed mode, doing every puzzle once, probably takes at least 5 hours. (Doing it hardcore, aka 3 keys on all puzzles with no updates, is going to take me 30+ hours.)

This leads me to another reason why the decision to limit the player to 5 new pieces is genius: each replay is different. I'm still playing the same puzzle, which I'm learning and getting better at, but the initial configuration is partially different (some pieces are always there, others vary) and the selection of pieces that come up is different each time you play. That means I can't learn the sequence by rote, I have to go deeper and learn the meaning of the shapes. It makes doing the replays fun for me where otherwise it could be a grind.

The game runs windowed at 1024x768 or fullscreen, extending the image to 16:9 format if needed. The interface is uncluttered and serves well. The game is accessible to children and should play well on touch devices. It runs fine on my old Windows XP machine, too.

This is not the type of jigsaws that you spend hours (or even half an hour) on. The game does have well over 6000 pieces, but they're split over 120 puzzles, which can be done quickly and casually. If that's what you want, and if you like the art style, you're going to enjoy this game. Recommended.. Very nice jigsaw puzzles. Simple but great if that's what you're after. Plenty of puzzles are the difficulty climbs. There's also a hint system built in so you don't get stuck.. Alice's Patchwork is a jigsaw puzzle game. The puzzling in itself is not challenging at all. The game tries to make it challenging by means of a couple of mechanisms:

• implementing a timer
  <\/li>
• not showing the size of the pieces before you pick them up
  <\/li>
• only showing a couple of pieces at any given time<\/li><\/ul>
  I don't like either of these mechanisms. Puzzling against a ticking clock is stressful. The fact that you only get to see the shape of a piece but not its size until you pick it up gets tedious and frustrating very quicly. Only getting to see a handful of the pieces at a time feels unnatural when it comes to jigsaw puzzling and seems like nothing more than a cheap way to make the game more difficult.
  
  Also, but this is a matter of personal opinion, I didn't like the art style of the puzzles. The end result of solving a jigsaw puzzle should be a beautiful picture but in 'Alice's patchwork' the end result is just an ugly stain-glass window type of picture. Look at the screenshots to judge for yourself. And note there are only three screenshots of actual puzzles (the ones where you see three keys on the left hand side of the screen), the others are screenshots of menus and such, so the developers don't seem tot be all that keen on the art style of their puzzles either. I've never seen a game advertised with 3 screenshots of the actual game and 5 screenshots of the game's menus before.
  
  The game has Steam Trading Cards and Steam Achievements but even for people who are very much into those things, I wouldn't recommend this game because there are plenty better games on Steam with cards and achievements.
  . I as a gamer that like to play diffrent games depending on what mode I am in; really enjoys this casual puzzle title.
  
  I will when I feel for it, go for most and maybe even all the achivements .
  
  For what it is; it is a good game.
  
  Worth anything under 2 Euro/Dollar. If you like textured puzzles this is really well done.
  For those who don't want the puzzles to be timed you go to settings and turn off the timer and play in relaxed mode and still get the same achievements.

  Cheers from Australia :). Love this - very relaxing. What I find important to remember is that it IS a puzzle - more than a jigsaw. Some one mentioned in the comments that often it gives you pieces that don't have an obvious fit. That is true - the only thing is, they probably DO fit somewhere it just isn't obvious. AND streight sides do NOT mean edge. So the challange is to find where they do fit. Every edge is unique, and sometimes you need to be able to see where the lines should go to find the right perfect fit.
  
  This is a beautiful unique well-thought out game with lots of small but polished features such as each set is made from an different material (wood, cloth, metals, etc. ) there are different sounds to when the peice goes in for each set, and perspective is sometimes important in working out the puzzles. And very family friendly.
