Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson go to the Midtown High Fall Formal. Meanwhile, the mysterious Green Goblin tries to force L. Thompson Lincoln to step down as NYC's Big Man of crime. Will Spider-Man be able to take on this new threat?
Peter makes Gwen's day by taking her to the school's formal fall dance. Harry is jealous and takes a transformation potion. The Green Goblin is out of crime king Lincoln's control and forms his own gang of pumpkins heads. Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson takes his visiting son, USAF Lt. Col. and astronaut John, to Lincoln's benefit ball for the youth center. The Green Goblin attacks, so Parker must leave his prom to help the mobster in whose pay he refused to do just that.
With two story arcs already in the can it's time to start another with catalysts. This episode finally introduces spider mans big bad the green goblin voiced by the o so maniacally enjoyable Steven Blum as he threatens the big man which shows us his side that he shows to the world with people not knowing he's the big man of crime. We also have mj being introduced to all of peters friends showing their jealousy to her looks and how Peter landed her. The most interesting thing however is Harry Osborns addiction to globulin green after glory dumps him ethics implies that he is the green goblin. Another character they introduced was John Jameson who was shown to be a heroic ply nice guy and his character is a great way of showing that there are more dimensions to Jonah Jameson's character, last thing to mention is Eddies dismissal of Peter when he comes to formal with mj further setting him up to become venom in a believable way oh and the interaction between tombstone and spidey at the end was a nice touch that I hope we get to see more of.
To be honest I initially had trouble with the animation style in this series -- after years of hard work to get the proportions of the characters just right, it looks like they threw all that out the window and started over from scratch -- but the reviewers were "crystal" that this series had something special so I checked it out. This episode was one of the most fun half-hours I have spent -- flashbacks, a really sweet riff on the MJ character (she keeps calling PP "tiger"); a Goblin with some of the best throwaway lines; JJ Jameson actually giving SM credit in a story; and enough high school angst to start another MEAN GIRLS script. There is a lot happening in this one episode, and that means a good time for the viewer.
