About This Game

Roguelite? Metroidvania? Roguevania!

You grew up with the roguelikes, witnessed the rise of the roguelites and even the birth of the roguelite-lites? We'd now like to present for your consideration our RogueVania, the illegitimate child of a modern Roguelite (Rogue Legacy, Binding of Isaac, Enter the Gungeon, Spelunky, etc.) and an old-school MetroidVania (Castlevania: SotN and its ilk).

Features:

 • RogueVania: The progressive exploration of an interconnected world, with the replayability of a rogue-lite and the adrenaline pumping threat of permadeath.
 • 2D Souls-lite Action: Tough but fair combat, more than fifty weapons and spells with unique gameplay, and of course, the emergency panic roll to get you out of trouble.
 • Nonlinear progression: Sewers, Ossuary or Remparts? Once unlocked, special permanent abilities allow you to access new paths to reach your objective. Opt for the path that suits your current build, your play style or just your mood.
 • Exploration: Secret rooms, hidden passages, charming landscapes. Take a moment to stroll the towers and breath in that fresh sea mist infused air...

Interconnected levels and progressive unlocking of access to the island provides you with a real incentive to explore your surroundings. Add in a degree of evolution for your character and permanent weapon upgrades and you can see where Dead Cells borrows from the long line of MetroidVanias that precede it.

At the end of the day though, it’s YOUR skills as a player that matter most! Roguelites are about constantly getting better, until what was an insurmountable obstacle becomes a walk in the park. Unforgiving combat wed to the absence of any kind of safety net makes for an adrenalin pumping ride each and every run and unrivaled replayability.

Dead Cells left Early Access on August 7th 2018 and comes with:

 • 13 Levels - Each one with its own atmosphere, foes and secrets to discover.
 • 4 Bosses - Made by the most sadistic of the devs, raised on the salt of the testers.
 • 90 or so weapons and skills - Spears, swords, bows, freeze blast, etc.
 • 4 special powers, unlocking new areas and paths (metroidvania gear lock items).
 • 1 epic responsive, fluid and fun to play combat system.
 • 1 Daily Run Mode Complete with leaderboards for lording it over your mates.
 • Hours of fun (depending on your skill, anything from 10 to 30 hours or more).
 • A few rage-quits, Ok a lot of rage quits… But you’ll git gud… Eventually.

super fun game <3. It's... Boring, I guess?
I mean, all this "kill, die, learn, repeat" attitude becomes a drag after fourty attemps or so, even with Dead Cells' great combat.
Eventually, you make progress and become better at combinig the items you get on each subsequent run, learn enemy behaviours, start blasting through initial areas with the speed of the motorcycle... But... It's still boring.

PS
Credit where credit is due, though: its Early Access politics made this game and its devs rightful Early Access role models. It's the only game I actually bought before the full release. They've been implementing a lot of user suggestions. So, even despite I didn't get into the game itself, kudos to Motion Twin!. Non-native english speaker here. I bought the game in EA in 2017.

Don't get me wrong, Dead Cells is a good game.
That being said, there are 6 difficulty levels and you must play on the highest difficulty to get to the last level (real ending).
Thinking about fighting the last boss on very hard or expert mode? Well, you can't.
Only 0.1% of players (Steam stats) have reached the last level and the last boss.

About 4 and 5 cells mode (highest difficulties and real ending):

Since the rise of the giant update the game has become unfair and unbalanced imo.
Enemies (they're more numerous now) have been buffed and some weapons have been nerfed.
Sometimes, there is so much stuff on screen, it's ridiculous. So you have to be very, very careful, spending the majority of your time standing still, waiting for your skills to cooldown.
Say goodbye to the fun fast-paced action.

I'd like to see the devs finishing it without using custom mode.. Играю с ёрли аксеса, зависимость есть, контента добавили, ещё и длц бесплатное подогнали. Можно аутировать почти бесконечно, экспериментируя с быстрым агрессивным или сейвовым медленным стилем прохождения.. Dead Cells fits pretty neatly into the category of roguelike metroidvanias, a genre I find delightful, and with there was more of. Of the other two games in the genre I would recommend over dead cells, I've played through several times, and would have no problem doing again.
But first, what it's good at: It succeeds at building up a 'kill streak' style of play with very fluid and satisfying movements kills and combos of the enemies, and by having a rather varied set of gear that you'd think allows customization, but since it's rng-mediated, more just expands your luck of the draw. it's enjoyable, and might be enough for people.
the level to level play is great, in the 8/10 area. However, the first boss of this game is so attrocious, I have no plans of finishing this game. it has so much health it would make any fight a slog, which combined with the fact that it has stacks of unavoidable damage, makes the fight either easy, if you've acquired the right rngear, or a luck fest depending on the cycles you get. And you will fight this boss the first time around 2 hours in, and then Every 20 minutes after that for the entire time you play. This is a genre built around being a boss showcase, where the bosses are hard, but Aceable in a satisfying way, that's about showing the skills you've developed in the previous levels. the bosses in this game are none of those things.
If you like the idea of Dead Cells, get Rogue Legacy or Sundered, which even has the kill-streak fast paced style of play that you might like in it. Both of these are games that came out before Dead Cells, and surpass it.. I just want to get this out of the way first. I was able to recommend the game before, but in it's current state, I really can't. I'm disappointed with it now, where the developers took it

Well then, lets get negatives out of the way first and then wrap up with the positives.

CONS:
-Difficulty is broken. Normal mode feels like it's made for babies, you can play it with your eyes closed. When you start to
play on harder modes, it ramps up instantly. It's either too easy or just broken, no in between.
-Extreme RNG. Elite enemies having special attacks that are random. So you never know what it will be and how you will
have to dodge. And you will get hit. Not to mention some of those attacks are completely unfair. For example, the enemy
spawns a laser "grid" around you, so you can't get out of it. Other enemies, however, can get in and out of it. And on
higher difficulties, there are tons of enemies, and they can often bunch up. So that often leads to your death, due to you
having no space to dodge
-Enemies hitting you off screen.
-Absolute spamfest, especially on higher difficulties. which can relate to the previous point. Enemies shooting you off
screen from all around the place, explosions going off left and right
-Screen clutter. There is an option to turn off the flashing lights and screen shake, but it doesn't help at all. I have it turned
off and sometimes I have no idea what's going on, due to all that spam I mentioned previously
-Some enemy design that simply makes you wonder "Who thought this was a good game design???" Invisible,f ast moving
enemies with fast firing projectiles that also cause poison, Enemies that can lock on to you through the walls and then fly
towards you, unpredictable enemies that can either rush to you and melee you or just stay back and shoot at you a few
times, that also move very fast, are invulnerable to status effects and you stunning them (unless you hit them while they
are in the air which is impossible unless you have a ranged weapon that can shoot upwards, not just straight in front of
you) And I can continue, but you get the point. Most of those enemies are on "One Boss Cell" (hard) difficulty and above.
-Enemy scaling is broken. Or rather, level difficulty, as there is no scaling anymore. One stage you can basically two-hit
enemies, and in the next stage after that they are extremely tanky all of a sudden.
-There is one viable stat build. No experimenting anymore
-Weapons are unbalanced. There are a few viable ones you should use if you want a successful run. Other weapons are
either "Meh, I'm gonna use it until I find the viable weapon" or "This is complete garbage", in which case you should just
restart the run if you get it as a starting weapon. There is no experimenting, no versatility, it's repetitive, as all of your
runs will go down to same weapons. Unless, of course, you force yourself to try using something different and new. In
which case, you shouldn't expect success.
-Game is grindy as all hell. One of the grindiest games I ever played. And this comes from a person who loves grindy
games. I love going around, unlocking stuff, collecting more resources to unlock more stuff and so on. But this game is
horrible. Because all of these major flaws ruin the grindy part as well. I had no problem with the grind before, when the
game was actually fun.
And one of the reasons I mentioned hard mode in the cons is because, well, you need to play on harder modes to get the
chance to upgrade weapons to a better quality. You also get more resources for upgrading and unlocking, aka "Cells"
If you want to grind int he normal mode, not only will it take eternity, but you wont have the access to some upgrade
options either

PROS:
-Game has good music
-Art style is nice. Although the enemies from the latest DLC look weird. They are jittery, unlike the rest of the game which
is quite smooth. And their design is extremely weird, with half of them not fitting into the rest of the game. I'm putting this
as a pro because majority of the game looks nice
-Level design is varied. There is some repetition across the levels, but they all have their atmosphere and overall "style"

So, as a conclusion.
I can't recommend this game at all. At least not in this state. I had tons of good words about it before, not anymore.
The negatives highly outweigh the positives. And I'm sad that it's like that. I'm sad to see where they are taking the game, too. And yeah, the game is supposed to be challenging. But this is just an illusion of a "challenge". Because the reason this game is hard is horrible enemy design, horrible mechanics idea, spam, enemies attacking you from off screen, tons of enemies just stun locking you, screen clutter, etc. It's not challenging, it's UNFAIR, that's the difference.

If you're planning on getting the game, don't. Spend the money somewhere else. At least until the game is balanced and fixed and put in order.
If you really, really want to get this game, wait for a major Steam sale, when it will likely be 50% off or more.
