While the production quality of the game itself is incredibly unique the actual game and story are not at all.

The graphics are extremely distinct and detailed, the amount of visual effects and aesthetics placed in the environments give it such a profound thematic tone. Meanwhile the sound design is gorgeous with so many sounds just being nice to listen to, defining different moments exclusively with how good the sound is.

But the story is quite possibly the most typical horror game trope conceivable. The protagonist is trapped in a limbo, where they traverse an asinine and nonsensical world founded vaguely off their memories or metaphorical incarnations of emotions. There's no structure or logic to what is happening, players walk from area to area with there being zero consistency to what is happening or why. There's not actually a story, because a real story isn't playing out. So there's nothing to grab onto as a viewer, no plot to be invested in since it's just a bunch of nonsense. There are only two possible outcomes, the protagonist succumbs to their problems in the cliche doomed protagonist ending or the protagonist overcomes their problems in the cliche saved protagonist ending. The people you talk to don't matter and don't exist, the things you do don't matter and don't exist; just keep moving on until the game says the protagonist has reached the emotional climax of their journey of self reflection and that's it. I've not even finished the game and I know how it will end, I've not even finished the game and I know what the rest of it is going to be like; more fantasy gibberish poorly centred around the metaphorical representation of a story instead of just having an actual story.

It seems like the developer is far more invested in this story then they should be. The original game was just about a guy doing his job, wandering through a real but also surreal world while he struggles with morality. But then this game blows that up like it's turning into some epic battle for the human soul, a lament to the tortured struggle of the human condition. Meanwhile it's just about some guy who didn't like his job. Literally this entire game is about glorifying what happened in the previous game.

Other games that do this trope of the protagonist wandering through a fantasy world based on their past, are different because in those game the player doesn't know the history of the protagonist and the reason they suffer. In this game you already know it all, because it was all explained in the first game. So this entire game is just about you hearing the same lore rehashed over and over with almost nothing new coming into play. There's no discovery or twists or basically anything new it's basically you reading a chopped up summary of a book you've already read. With maybe one mild scary moment every twenty minutes.

Accompanying the abhorrent story are a bunch of mindless, asinine puzzles. The little mini-game like puzzles are cute and nice, but the item puzzles make zero sense. You walk around, pick up the only thing in the room then use it on the only other thing in the room and that's it puzzle solved move on. Thus the process of solving puzzles mostly just feels like filler and chores designed to pad the game out instead of actually giving it real gameplay of any sort. If the puzzles were not there, you would just walk through each area unhindered and have almost the exact same experience minus a couple extra minutes of fetching and carrying items around. It's boring and mindless, and the puzzles make zero sense it's just random chores you perform to trigger the code that lets you advance there's no sense of continuity or reason to the actions you are performing. Almost a complete paraphrase of the story.

Then there's some more minor issues like the titles that show up in every room. Giving every room a title which players see when they enter it, mostly breaks immersion. As it's basically developer commentary flashing on your screen every couple seconds. It's not like these are the names of places in the game it's literally just vague pseudo-dramatic lines like The Way Beyond or The Odd Couple. Serves no purpose and just drags the player out of the immersion by not allowing them to just sink into the actual game and atmosphere itself. Then there is also the interface beeping sound that plays during dialogue, there's no reason to have a beeping sound each time you advance dialogue when the dialogue already has its own vocal sounds. More immersion breaking, every sentence a character speaks there's a beep at the end from you advancing the dialogue.

At first I was absolutely blown away by the gorgeous visuals and phenomenal sound, but then the game just kept padding itself out with meaningless nonsense fake item fetch puzzles with a copy paste story about a guy who is metaphorically battling his personal issues by walking left and right through a meaningless nonsense world.

I just got bored. This story is so typical and predictable while the gameplay isn't engaging at all.. While the production quality of the game itself is incredibly unique the actual game and story are not at all.
