I cannot heap enough praise onto this game. Played it for the first time today on stream, and finished on Hard Rock mode up to Europe, and if I were to take issue with anything it's that I doubt there's ever going to be enough to satisfy my craving for content in this tremendous title. Yes, I received this from the devloper, but I am absolutely not one to praise a product for any reason other than me loving it. The music rocks. The writing is funny and engaging, the characters are great, there are a ton of great hidden references.. As a fan of rhythm games I've been looking forward to this one since I saw the game jam version. This version (Early Access at this time) truly demonstrates the depth of the concept though. It might have fewer buttons than Rock Band, but the key decision to give you the choice of which drum to beat is what elevates the game to that rare level of being simple to pick up but extremely difficult to master. The combo system, the weapon upgrades, it all combines to make you want to get better and better. The presentation is incredible, first class pixel art, properly metal metal in the music and I was surprised (and pleased) to see a story mode added, even though the heart of this game is the rhythm bit.. I got Double Kick Heroes at PAX East, and it's one of the best rhythm games I've ever played. The game in it's current Early Access form already is a fairly finished product (at least in the sense that there is no sudden and unexpected stop in gameplay where you can no longer progress). As a fan of both metal and rhythm games, I can very happily say that Elmobo's music is pretty kickass. It spans from several genres such as your classics such as heavy metal (classic Iron Maiden influence), thrash metal, and death metal to more recent trends such as djent, industrial metal (complete with Rammstein style German lyrics), and even a Babymetal style track (look in the game's file directory under /res/music/loligothnodrums.wav because you can't hide any secrets from me Blackmagic). Headbanging is 100% guaranteed. In terms of gameplay, I thought Hard Rock (basically normal difficulty) was easy enough to get by all the levels without much issue. However, once you start stepping up into Metal and beyond, things get challenging especially on boss battles. Super enjoyable and challenging. Definitely worth going through the game's story and then pushing forward through the harder difficulties. On top of the game's existing songs, there's also the pretty extensive song creator so you can grab any existing song and a MIDI version of it to make your own custom level. Currently you have some custom levels shipped with your game already like Metallica's Master of Puppets and Tenacious D's The Metal. The only complaint I could have is more of a technical one. Sometimes between level loads there are some weird hang ups probably due to loading. I suspect that it's at least partially due to the game being a Flash game written in Haxe. I can understand that this was probably done because the game was made as a Ludum Dare game, but I would be interested in seeing any future possibility of using OpenFL instead of Flash + Adobe AIR. EDIT: If anyone is wondering how you unlock the two blue challenge songs in Arcade mode, beat the first boss (the shark head guy) with a 90% score or above. You'll get a Meshuggah style djent and the Babymetal style song.. I SUCK AT THIS GAME! Well that is one way to start a game review. To start things off, I have never played a rhythm game like Rock Band or Guitar Hero, so I don't have a crazy drum setup or guitar to help me out. All I had was a classic XBox controller and old man hands. I had an AMAZING time playing Double Kick Heroes. The music was top notch, the story wasn't horrible, and all the METAL references in game had me pumping a fist in the air to almost every song. Iconic metal musicians, Danny Trejo as Metalchete, and machines guns coming out of the back of a Cadillac to fight off hoards of zombies and rabid chickens. What more could you want in a game. How about a mecha T-rex? Yeah. they got that! I sucked at this game.. A neat mixture of conventional rhythm gameplay and shoot-em-up mechanics. The pixel art looks great, the hard rock/metal songs are good, and the campaign's dialog and concepts are endearingly crazy and crude. The unique mix of mechanics makes for a major learning curve, though, especially when powerups and driving controls are thrown in too. The track editor is also super confusing and clunky despite having some good foundations. I still had a lot of fun playing the still-unfinished campaign though, and see the game continuing to find fans when it's more refined and balanced in its final version.. Do you like games with zombies, metal music and guns? And also plot? Try Double Kick Heroes! A unique intersect between shmups and rhythm games, I had the chance to try the game out and pick up a key at PAX East 2018. Let me say first that as someone who is passible at shmups and awful at music games, I appreciate that DKH has a range of difficulty options. And also fun artwork and character dialogue. I already prefer it to games like Guitar Hero for that reason alone. The music's pretty good too. The titular metal band are about to put on a show in Los Angeles when they discover that their audience as gotten a bit ripe. Fleeing in their "Gundillac," Shiela, the gang begin a headbanging tour across the US in search of supplies and eventually, the truth behind the end of the world. They tell you up front that the game is better played with an arcade stick or guitar type controller, but lacking either I have been forced to make do with a keyboard. It works, but I get the sense I'm at a disadvantage. Based on what I've seen, Double Kick Heroes is a fun time and could over a significant challenge if you're looking for that sort of thing.. The game looks great and has great music but it let me down that a lot of the time the rythm for pressing keys is sometimes wrong or seems offbeat also i feel like the shooting up and down should be seperated and mapped specifically for the level so that if you hit all of the beats you will succeed the level and that way you dont have the freedom of choosing whether to shoot up or down for the same sound queue as it can get very confusing. u2026u2026u2026u2026.$u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026.$u2026u2026u2026u2026. u2026u2026u2026u2026$$u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026.$$u2026u2026u2026u2026 u2026u2026u2026u2026$$u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026.$$u2026u2026u2026u2026 u2026u2026u2026u2026.$$su2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026s$$u2026u2026u2026u2026. u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026.$$$$u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026.$$$$u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026. u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u00b3$$$$.u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6.$$$$u00b3u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026 u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026.u00b3$$$$.u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6.$$$$u00b3u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026. u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u00b6.$$$$$.u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6.$$$$$.u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026 u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u00b6u00b6.$$$.u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6.$$$.u00b6u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026 u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u00b6u00b6u2026.u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u2026.u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026 u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026 u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026. u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u00b6u2026u2026.u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026 u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u00b6u2026u2026.u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026. u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6.u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026. u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u2026u2026u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026. u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026 u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026.u00b6.u00b6.u00b6.u00b6.u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026 u2026u2026u2026u2026u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026. u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026 u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026 u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u00b6u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026 u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u00b6.u00b6u00b6.u00b6u00b6.u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026.u00b6.u00b6u00b6.u00b6u00b6.u00b6u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026 u2026u2026u00b6.u00b6u00b6.u00b6u00b6.u00b6u00b6.u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026.u00b6.u00b6u00b6.u00b6u00b6.u00b6u00b6.u00b6u2026u2026. u2026.u00b6u00b6.u00b6u00b6.u00b6u00b6.u00b6u00b6.u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026.u00b6.u00b6u00b6.u00b6u00b6.u00b6u00b6.u00b6u00b6u2026u2026 u2026u2026u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6.u00b6u00b6.u00b6u00b6u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026u2026.u00b6u00b6.u00b6u00b6.u00b6u00b6u00b6u00b6u2026u2026. the editor is a pain in theu2665u2665u2665u2665u2665to use but it's worth it.. I've tried and bought the game at Stunfest a few days ago. It's a great game, I definely recommend it ! The songs are really nice and the graphics are pleasant too. I'm not very familiar rythm games so I had a hard time on some levels (T-Rex for example) but I still managed to beat the game in Metal difficulty. There are currently no level with 3 tracks in that difficulty and you figure out quickly that the second track is optional (the main combo does not reset when you miss the cymbals) so I sometimes just ignored that second track to be a bit more focused on the main one (especially on the tank boss). I expected more patterns because that really makes the game enjoyable. Maybe that's the case when you lower the difficulty. I've tried the hardest difficulty and having that 3rd track is also nice to have. Maybe there will be levels with only these two tracks where you have to choose when to activate the sniper to bring down the high HP targets. I think it would be nice that the 2 "bonus" bars would not go down when you don't press the key, at least on some difficulties. It would reward the players who pay more attention on what's happening on the road and offering more gameplay possibilities. On that note, I like the fact that you have to look at something else than just the track. I think the songs could have more calm segments so that the player can enjoy the animations, build up the combo and such. It seems weird that some events are happening at different time. I guess that's because you have to clear a wave before the boss can appear but it is a bit frustrating to have the gameplay cut abruptly by a boss. It even makes it harder sometimes because you have to resync with the song. a bit frustrating. I went for the story mode even if I'm not the kind of player who reads the dialogs or the tooltips, maybe ask the player on first launch ? I'll also dump some "little" issues I've found on that first playthrough. When using fullscreen, the right part of the screen is hidden. In the sound settings, a bar is cropped behind something that should be in the background. I have constant 60 fps but I think it's not smooth enough, especially for a 2D game. Better music transition in between menus would be nice. Switching between levels is a bit too long in my opinion.. Possibly one of my favourite rhythm games I have played. Only playing on metal difficulty (hard) and it lives up to its title considering the main guns are only two buttons trying to focus on where to shoot, getting my grenades oh and dodging an undead dinosaur that shoots fricking laser beams out of its fricking head the game is both enjoyable and challenging.
