James Bond investigates the hijacking of British and Russian submarines carrying nuclear warheads, with the help of a K.G.B. Agent, whose lover he killed.
The British discover that someone has perfected a way of tracking submerged submarines and is offering the technology to the highest bidder. An international crisis breaks when a Royal Navy Polaris submarine equipped with sixteen nuclear warheads disappears while on patrol. The British send agent James Bond to secure the tracking device and locate the missing vessel before its missiles are launched at the West.
Roger Moore, my fave of the James Bond actors, shines here in his best outing as Bond, James -- well, you know. This film is delightfully over the top, violent, sexy, funny, outrageous and totally implausible. Everything a James Bond should be. They haven't made a good Bond film since Moore left the series in my somewhat less than humble opinion. You'll also dig the great Carly Simon theme song and Marvin Hamlwhateverhisnameis' score.
The Spy Who Loved Me is remembered as one of Roger Moore's better runs as Agent 007, as well as Octupussy. This film is excellent, and I agree. It is stamped with the major elements of Bond, the exotic locations (the ocean, the desert area). The acting is very good too, especially with Moore taking this role a bit more seriously then his other portrayals. However, the biggest acting job in this film is to Richard Kiel as Jaws. Jaws is remembered as one as the all time best Bond villians, even though he was assigned a weak fate in Moonraker. His facial expressions and pure size are amazing to watch, as he dictates the screen with his terrifying prescence. The plot, script and direction, are also very well done. The stunts are amazing, especially the opening scene in which Roger Moore actually jumps off of a cliff and parachutes. Everything else about this film is very standard Bond, beautiful women and beautiful cars. Q is also excellent here as usuall, supplying a good line about the car. Bond: "Have I ever let you down Q?" Q: "Frequently." It's a recommended viewing for any Bond fan, and especially watch out for the last twenty minute action sequence in the end. Truly memorable. 8.5/10
What The Spy Who Loved Me lacks when it comes to establishing the atmosphere of danger present in some the best Bond movies it makes up in spades in the creation of one apparently-impossible situation for the protagonist after the other, the kind that other entries would have been lucky to include a single example.
Following the disappearance of two Russian and British submarines, both equipped with nuclear warheads, British Secret Service head M (Bernard Lee) and KGB General Anatol Gogol (Walter Gotell) agree to work together in "a new era of Anglo-Soviet cooperation." Consequently, MI6 agent James Bond (Roger Moore) and KGB agent Major Anya Amasova (Barbara Bach) are sent together to Sardinia in an attempt to pursue a lead that links reclusive shipping magnate Karl Stromberg (Curd Jürgens) with a microfilm containing designs for the submarine tracking system that may have been used to abduct the missing subs, that is, if they can avoid the bite of Stomberg's assassin Jaws (Richard Kiel), a 7-foot towering Goliath with steel teeth. All of the James Bond movies are based, in some part, upon novels by British author Ian Fleming [1908-1964]. The Spy Who Loved Me is based on Fleming's 1962 novel of the same name. It was adapted for the screen by Richard Maibaum and Christopher Wood. Wood, in turn, novelized the movie in James Bond, The Spy Who Loved Me, published the same year in which the movie was released (1977). The Spy Who Loved Me is the tenth film in the EON Bond franchise and the third movie to feature Roger Moore as James Bond, 007. The Spy Who Loved Me doesn't have a title song. The song that plays over the opening credits is "Nobody Does it Better", performed by Carly Simon. The song does have one line that includes the title of the film. Bond starts out in Austria, where he is just finishing another mission. After a brief meeting with M in England, he is then sent to Egypt in order to obtain the plans to a highly-advanced submarine tracking system that is being marketed to the highest bidder. There he meets Anya Amasova who is on a similar mission to obtain the plans for the Soviets. When the plans lead them to a rich shipping tycoon Karl Stromberg, who lives in an underwater "city" that he calls Atlantis, Bond and Anya are ordered by their respective superiors to go together to Sardinia to get the plans from Stromberg. Sardinia is an Italian island in the Mediterranean Sea off the western coast of Italy and south of Corsica (which is governed by France). Yes. As M and Gogol, are about to enter a room, M says to Gogol "After you, Alexis," and Gogol replies, "After you, Miles." Assuming the two leaders know each other familiarly and aren't using made up names, it would appear that M's first name is Miles. According to producer Michael G. Wilson on the documentary "Inside The Spy Who Loved Me", Stromberg wants to destroy mankind for polluting the oceans. An earlier version of the script had Stromberg targeting the submarine SLBMs at the world's oil fields. However, an early version of "Never Say Never Again" due to be produced around this time involved Blofeld threatening to destroy New York unless humanity stops polluting the oceans and the producer Kevin McClory sued Eon for plagiarism. Consequently, all references to pollution were removed from the script. He uses the detonator for the warhead which is what is termed a "shaped charge", conventional explosive configured in such a way that it focuses its' blast in one direction. This is used to trigger the nuclear explosion of the radioactive material but by itself will easily cut through steel. Stromberg captures the USS Wayne the same way he captured the Royal NavyRanger and the Soviet Potemkin submarines by knocking out their electrical power with sonar and then swallowing the entire sub inside the hold of the Liparus supertanker. He releases the first two subs with orders to destroy New York and Moscow and then takes Anya with him to Atlantis, leaving Bond behind with the other prisoners (the crew from the three captured submarines). Bond breaks loose and frees the prisoners, who overpower the crew of the Liparus. However, the control room still remains impregnable until Bond blows it open by using the detonator from one of the Wayne's nuclear torpedoes. With only three minutes until the submarines launch their warheads, Bond manages to reprogram them so that they blow up each other instead of New York and Moscow. Bond and the prisoners escape the Liparus on the Wayne and use another of its torpedoes to blow up the Liparus, sinking it completely. Orders then come from the Pentagon to blow up Atlantis, but Bond asks the captain to give him one hour so that he can rescue Anya. Bond jet-skis to Atlantis and is greeted by Stromberg, who tries first to feed Bond to his shark (but Bond straddles the elevator floor and isn't dropped into the water) and then tries to shoot him under the table (but Bond moves just in time and fires four bullets into Stromberg). He then goes looking for Anya but encounters Jaws instead. Bond eludes Jaws by turning on an electromagnet that holds Jaws by his teeth, and Bond then drops him into the shark tank (the shark gets the worse of it). Just as Bond finds and releases Anya, the Wayne commences firing on Atlantis. As the Atlantis crumbles into the ocean, Bond and Anya are jettisoned into the water in Stromberg's escape pod, conveniently outfitted with a supply of Dom Perignon '52. Anya then points a gun at Bond, reminding him of her vow to kill him when the mission is over. Bond asks for a favor and suggests that they first get out of their wet clothes. Anya smiles, drops the gun, and goes into Bond's arms. In the final scene, Jaws can be seen swimming to shore, while the Royal Navy picks up the escape pod. Both M and Gogol look in the window and see Bond and Anya in flagrante delicto. "Bond, what do you think you're doing?" M asks. "Keeping the British end up, sir," Bond replies and pulls down the shades. The original novel is a completely different story. It tells the story of a troubled woman named Vivienne Michel who is in danger of being murdered by gangsters, one of whom inspired the character of Jaws. She is eventually rescued by Bond (who doesn't appear until Chapter 10). Including The Spy Who Loved Me, Moore made seven movies in which he played James Bond: Live and Let Die (1973) (1973), The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) (1974), The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), Moonraker (1979) (1979), For Your Eyes Only (1981) (1981), Octopussy (1983) (1983), and A View to a Kill (1985) (1985).
