A man who serves in the war between the forces of Light and Dark comes into possession of a device that can restore life to Moscow, which was nearly destroyed by an apocalyptic event.
It has been some time since the grand finale of the original film. Anton continues to fight the forces of Darkness while simultaneously attempting to find and save his son from the clutches of those same forces. But when Dark Others start mysteriously getting killed, and Anton is framed for their murders, he must put that goal on hold and try to escape the Day Watch that is looking for his blood.
I strongly suggest watching or re-watching the first movie (Night Watch) if you're really intent on watching this one otherwise you will be lost. Day Watch does not cater well to new viewers. As a sequel to a solid first movie (that had good ideas and a fresh visual style), I found it rather disappointing, underwhelming and confusing. Some of the special effects were quite good but they were few and far between except at the very start and at the end. The English dubbing was so bad, I went back to Russian with English subtitles. I didn't like the story, nor how it was told. I also didn't like the "chalk of fate" aspect one bit and the ending is a big cheap cop-out.

Rating: 4 out of 10 Day Watch is the sequel to Night Watch, which came out a couple of years back. It was pretty good: the battle between light and dark in modern day Moscow, had more intelligence than some of the Hollywood movies around at that time. Day Watch takes up the story from where Night Watch left off, and is an even better movie.

The plot does have a lot of threads, but unlike say Pirates 3 for example, it doesn't over-complicate anything. After a brief recap of the events from Night Watch, it dives straight into a flashback about a piece of chalk that can re-write destiny. This may sound silly, but works very well.

After the flashback sequence, it then resumes the story of Anton, a Night Watch agent, currently training Svetlana who has the potential to be a great light magician. When they get a call that a normal human has been attacked by someone from the dark side. Giving chase, Anton discovers it was his son (revealed in Night Watch). Meanwhile someone is killing dark ones, and the Anton is under suspicion. And all the while Anton finds out about the chalk, and plans to re-write the past....

Based on the novels by Sergei Lukyanenko, Timur Bekmanbetov who co-wrote the movie has created a stunning view of Moscow. He makes great use of the locations and sets up and directs some brilliant set-pieces, from a car tearing down city streets and on buildings, a car chase through Moscow to a fantastic climax as light and dark face-off and all hell breaks loose, as Moscow is destroyed.

The movie is I think well acted, though sometimes with subtitled movies that can be hard to judge. I'm not complaining. I'd rather watch a subtitled movie than a poorly dubbed movie.

As I said, although there is a lot of plot and story going on here, but it's not over-long (about 2 hours), some fantastic CGI, that shows the powers of both sides, without going over-board.

Overall,it's one of the best fantasy movies this year, and like the first more original than some of Hollywood's blockbusters. The worst thing Bekmambetov has picked up from his American models is the tendency of megasequels to aggrandize material grown enervated, to compensate for thinness by spreading out.
