In the year 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Delacourt, a government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn't stop the people of Earth from trying to get in by any means they can. When unlucky Max is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that, if successful, will not only save his life but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
In the year 2154, the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth. A man takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds.
South African filmmaker Neill Blomkamp directed one of my all-time favorite science fiction films four years ago, "District 9" (2009) (my second favorite picture that year, behind James Cameron's "Avatar"). He follows it up with his second major feature, 2013's "Elysium," a nightmarish futuristic science fiction action-thriller set in the next century on an over-populated, pollution-ravaged planet Earth.

In this future - year 2154 - there exists only two classes of people: the very rich, who live on an orbiting space station-habitat called Elysium, and everyone else, who live on an Earth that has been devastated by pollution and over-population. Enter into this picture, the wild card Max Da Costa (Matt Damon), an ex-convict factory line-worker living in Los Angeles who takes on a special mission that will take him from Earth to Elysium, and hopefully bring equality between the two disparate masses of people by opening up the ultimate gated community for Everyone Else. Even more so, Max's mission is not to save mankind, but ultimately to save himself.

Matt Damon himself is a wild card in this picture. Known for his boyish good looks, Blomkamp has Damon do everything in his power to make him the most buff-looking, grungiest, most visually un-appealing science fiction anti-hero the genre has seen in the longest time. With a completely shaved head, prison-issued tattoos and a low-jack ankle monitoring device to complete the look, Blomkamp brings us a 2154 where Damon's ultra-rugged, reformed thug Max Da Costa fits right in.

It is also without any real surprise that Max's tough-guy exterior begins to crack when by chance he one day reunites with his childhood sweetheart Frey (Alice Braga), who also comes with her own personal complications to overcome. And he also undergoes a gruesome back-alley procedure at a human chop-shop that has him retro-fitted with a state-of-the-art exo-suit (which recalls a more compact version of the alien weapon system at the climax of "District 9") that will surely help him in his many battles against the corporate-run police state and the metallic armored robot-thugs that routinely oppresses him. In order to accomplish anything, he must first dethrone Elysium's well-dressed, ice-cold chief of security, Defense Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster), and her chief minion, an Earth-bound mercenary monster named Agent Kruger (Sharlto Copley, Blomkamp's sole hold-over from "District 9"), who grows progressively unhinged as the battle for Elysium wages on.

In dealing with such timely issues such as class-ism, elitism, corporatism, environmental degradation, health care, immigration and worker exploitation, "Elysium" successfully transposes these key themes into a realistic, futuristic scenario that is all too possible (and we do, in fact, seem to be well on our way to such a scenario), even if it is all a little heavy-handed at times. But Blomkamp delights in creating a rough & tumble wish-fulfillment science fiction fantasy that sees the poor, over-worked, down-trodden masses fighting for their rightful slice of the pie that's been horded by the uber-wealthy, elite 1%.

Also like in "District 9," Blomkamp spares no cost in staging ultra-bloody action sequences where human bodies are suddenly transformed into Heinz ketchup. Matt Damon handles himself extremely well, bringing tough-guy gravitas - and his Everyman vulnerability - to a part that could have just been another typical sci-fi action hero. While he retains his Everyman sensibilities, he is otherwise virtually unrecognizable from his usual self; like I said earlier, he fits right in with his grungy, futuristic surroundings.

Neil Blomkamp is quickly becoming one of my favorite new sci-fi filmmakers of late. With both "District 9" and "Elysium," he has succeeded in bringing back intelligence, social commentary, and even principles to a genre that has lacked all three for several years. I still believe "Children of Men" (2006) is the best new science fiction film the 21st century has seen yet. But if Blomkamp continues on this current streak of his, he may very well be in a new class of science fiction filmmakers, up there with other greats such as James Cameron, Steven Spielberg, and Ridley Scott.

8/10 By first glance at the very first still, I already believed that Elysium will be the best blockbuster of the year; the story isn't based on anything, the concept looks rich, and the character design of Max looks like a potential of a new cinematic icon. With the name Neill Blomkamp, you will know that this is more than a simple high concept. Just like District 9, the story builds a social allegory. Now this one talks about the economy, illegal immigrations, and healthcare. It would have been intriguing, but the film is shaky in its message and somehow more satisfied on being cool, which ends up being a straightforward action movie that has only little development. The rest of it is still quite gripping and stunning, with a vision that is more breathtaking than any blockbuster out there. Elysium is fine for its big ideas, but the context needs more to work out.

The setting is definitely built for satires, though unlike District 9, this one takes them seriously, as in not much humorous. Its cynicism is everywhere, but it depicts both rich and poor in a typical way. Elysium is run by a selfish, corrupt government and its citizens are too naive and pleasured to be concern about what's going on, while Earth is mostly inhabited by good people because they get all the suffering. It's fascinating how they have to realistically contrast between both class; the space torus world is more advanced than the third world, but no matter how they tried to make it look close to reality, the political wars still feel campy and contrived. The plan of the "heroes" also seems amazingly absurd. It's Sci-Fi, sure, but again it's an allegory to a real life problem. Their solution for the healthcare crisis is quite otherworldly. I guess this is for the sake to fit for an action movie plot, but that also results to a less impressive delivery of its subtext. In other subject, the film doesn't provide enough detail beneath the corruption of the Elysium government, neither the devastation of Earth which makes an underwhelming commentary.

The storytelling is terribly straightforward, though straightforward is not actually a problem. You can develop a character by studying their personalities even without any back stories, but here even a single flashback and brief pathos won't bring much genuine connection to the audience. The actual energy relies more to the technical work and the performances. The characters may be somewhat bland, but the actors thankfully filled something in their marvelously designed roles. Matt Damon gives all of Max's weakness and redemption, which makes him an endearing protagonist. Sharlto Copley's unhinged villainous turn is endlessly enjoyable. Wagner Moura and Diego Luna manage to be likable in their small roles, while Jodie Foster and William Fichtner brought some appropriate antagonism.

The film is best when it focuses on the cool stuff. Every image of the film is undeniably breathtaking to look at. The production is awesome with rust and dirt all over it. The special effects are simply magnificent compared to Hollywood's most recent summer blockbusters. The action is of course has the joy of blowing up flesh into pieces, palpable trademark of the director. Neill Blomkamp pours the best of his technical filmmaking skills.

Personally, Elysium is a disappointment. The world it created is so brilliant, it would have been a powerful blockbuster that would outweigh all the remakes, reboots, sequels, prequels, adaptations, and other unoriginal projects Hollywood provides nowadays. It's still pretty innovative and very entertaining, but the story had something to say and it troubles to that point. I still think Neill Blomkamp is a magnificent storyteller. I just wish he can use more of the human side of his stories. Matt Damon ends up achieving that, but it wasn't enough unfortunately, though it's getting there. Maybe more exploration would help to make it all compelling. If you have no interest in its sociopolitical content, then feast your eyes by one of the most eye popping visuals and exciting set pieces ever presented this year. If Elysium is the brainiest Hollywood movie of the summer, it's also the most conflicted one.
Former car thief Max da Costa (Matt Damon), now a parolee working for the Armadyne weapons factory in 2154 Los Angeles and recently exposed to a lethal dose of radiation bound to kill him in five days, agrees to steal "organic information" (e.g., bank codes and passwords) from the brain of Armadyne CEO John Carlyle (William Fichtner) in exchange for passage to Elysium, a man-made space station inhabited by Earth's elite, in hopes of gaining access to a Med-bay, a medical chamber capable of healing him. However, what begins as a desperate effort to save his life leads to something far greater. Elysium is based on a screenplay written by South African-Canadian filmmaker Neill Blomkamp. While Frey (Alice Braga) carries Matilda (Emma Tremblay) to the surface to find a Med-bay, Max and Spider (Wagner Moura) stay behind to locate the Elysium's computer core. In an attempt to stop them, Tucker (Sharlto Copley) pursues, but Max manages to kill him by hurling him over a ledge, still holding on to a grenade, which explodes as he falls. Spider breaks into the computer core and changes the computer program to read Earth's population as being "legal". As Spider prepares to download the "organic info" from Max's brain, he is warned that the download will be "lethal" to Max. Already knowing that, Max still agrees to the download. After contacting Frey for a final goodbye, Max pushes the button that starts the download and reboots the computer, killing himself in the process. President Patel (Faran Tahir) arrives with security robots, but they refuse to arrest Spider, who is now recognized as a citizen of Elysium. Meanwhile, Frey has found a Med-bay and uses it to heal Matilda, reversing her final stage lymphocytic leukemia in seconds. In the final scene, shuttles containing dozens of Med-bays arrive on Earth from Elysium to begin the process of healing the sick, causing Frey to look up and smile. Elysium spins, like a wheel, and the resulting centrifugal force creates artificial gravity on its inner edge. This keeps both its inhabitants and the atmosphere [not really, see entry above!] effectively pinned down to the surface. It's an old concept for a practical way to achieve artificial gravity in space.
