Over twenty years since the first telling of the story, Bruce Lee's _Chinese Connection_ returns to the screen. The classic story has its roots in Chinese history -- the actual defeat of Master Huo at the hands of the Japanese. This time around, popular actor and martial arts champion Jet Li steps into the shoes of folk hero Chen Zhen, in a race to save his master's honor and his own pride.
Chen Zhen, a Chinese engineering student in Kyoto, who braves the insults and abuse of his Japanse fellow students for his local love Mitsuko Yamada, daughter of the director, returns in 1937 to his native Shangai, under Japanse protectorate -in fact military occupation- after reading about the death of his kung-fu master Huo Yuan Jia in a fight against the Japanese champion Ryuichi Akutagawa. While overcoming suspicion and ambition within the kungfu school, Chen exhumes his master to prove Hou's defeat was the result of poisoning. Both nationalities make the case a test of honor, so Chinese and Japanese pride are at stake when it culminates in Chen's final epic duel against the ruthless, undefeated Japanese general Fujita.
First - the coreography was great and some people might argue that you see these films for the coreography. If spectacular and rather funny fight scenes are your thing (reminds me a trifle of Jackie Chan) then this movie would probably be good for you.

What turned me off was the story. Despite being an immense rip-off of Fist of Fury (a.k.a. The Chinese Connection) with Bruce Lee, Jet Li lacked the grim disposition that Bruce Lee potrayed so well in Fist of Fury (rather unlike all his other rather stereotyped roles), the movie lacked the climatic ending of Fist of Fury, it lacked the love story. It lacked most things.

The love story was perhaps the worst thing in the entire movie. Suddenly she decides to move back to Kyoto as spontaneously as she decided to come to Shanghai... and there is no followup!!!

This movie was much like a porn flick - great action, no story

My rating: 4 out of 10 (only for the fight scenes, otherwise a 2) I missed much of the story the first time I saw this movie. I was viewing a sub-titled version and did not pay attention to the subtitles because of was so awestruck by the fighting ability of Jet Li, whom I had never seen before viewing this movie. The child Jet carried with him was amazing martial artist as well. I read up on him, and found out that he really is a talented martial artist, and his fight scenes weren't productions of well done choreography.

Like several other HongKong movies a extended cut was released in Taiwan only featuring approx. 4 minutes of prolonged story elements that are missing in the well-known version.
