About This Game

Along the Edge is a visual novel set in the European countryside, where your choices impact the main character's personality and appearance.

Story

Daphné is at a dead-end. She's unsatisfied by her personal and professional life. So, when she inherits an old family house in a remote part of the country, she jumps at the opportunity to start anew.

Does she decide to embrace her legacy or does she hang on to her old way of life?

Features

  • An adult and slightly occult universe painted with the vibrant colors of the European countryside.

  • Each of your choices impact the main character personality, mood and appearance.

  • A huge amount of content, enough to fill a two years compendium of a comic-book series:
    — Over 450 hand-made full-screen illustrations and 20 characters with over 400 different variants and attitudes (including 38 possible appearance evolutions of the main character, Daphné),
    — 80.000 words in English and in French (which would translate into a 400 pages novel).

  • 60 different endings, 28 achievements to unlock. Throughout the story, your choices will impact:
    — how the plot ends (6 possibilities),
    — the destiny of the main character (4 possibilities),
    — the romantic relationships of the main character (3 possibilities),
    — several smaller plot points (such as the life or death of some supporting characters).

This game is effortlessly charming. DEFINITELY worth a try, even if you don't typically play interactive visual novels. It will delight you with its gentle, nuanced atmosphere and romantic conception of village life.

What attracted me to this game initially was the opportunity to change the protagonist's highly variable appearance through gameplay & decision-making. This is redeemably fun and rewarding in your first playthrough and later ones.

There is A LOT of replayability because of the many different endings for: 1 - the personality of your character/her appearance; 2 - the overall plot; 3 - relationships with family/friends/romantic npc's; 4 - all the other minor conditions/achievements. Of course, your unique playthrough ending will be a combination of all of these factors.

This is definitely NOT an animé dating sim or some pornographic garbage like that (those types of games seem to infect the steam store's homepage, don't they?)... Just look at and listen to the quality artwork/music of the trailer if you want reassurance. There might be a little witchcraft or some scary scenes for children, though.

All the elements here combine to create a setting which feels rural European and timeless. This game is a pleasure and playing with the original French text is a good way to learn the language.. It got a story quite good to be a movie or even a serie. The only bad thing is that it's a bit short and that it's just not deep enough like they intentionally keep parts of the story untold. I'd give it more points otherwise. My first playthrough was enjoyable, it may have a good replay value.

Overall, awesome game, buy only at dicounted price. Wow, this game - it's completely awesome! The visuals are very appealing, and the story is both thrilling and touching, I've come to really care for the characters. Also, there are so many choices to take... I just finished my 3rd playthrough, and each time it's completely different, and I already see several more paths I'd like to explore, see what would have been if I made a different choice at some point. If you're considering buying this game, don't consider, just buy it already!. I really enjoyed playing this game, the artwork is beautiful and the story is engaging and interesting.

I recommend to anyone interested in visual novels and choice based narratives.

. Not quite a game, more of an interactive story.

First and foremost: the art is gorgeous. The character portraits are full of personality and the dioramas have a dream-like quality to them that really helps sell the setting (rural France). The main character's appearance also changes according to the choices, which I enjoyed.

The primary game mechanic is the pair of alignments - Globe/Star (belief) and Sun/Moon (attitude), corresponding roughly to science/occult and nice/b*tchy. Various dialogue options will pull you towards one of these alignments, though your exact position on the xy chart is not shown. It's an interesting conceit as in theory there are four "builds" - Globe-Sun, Globe-Moon, Star-Sun and Star-Moon (nice scientist, mean scientist, nice witch, mean witch) corresponding to the four endings.

Generally, the story works better if you go occult - being curious and actually gathering evidence (like you want to be in this kind of game) will often pull you towards the occult scale, while staying on the 'science' side often requires you to be wilfully blind to all the supernatural stuff going on, like Scully in the X-Files. There is some attempt to suggest that the magic parts may be a bunch of trickery, psychology and folklore, but it doesn't make a lot of sense in the context of the story.

The story ends somewhat abruptly - it feels like it's missing a third act, and in particular the Globe-side endings leave the story ending on an unsatisfactory note, with a ton of loose ends that don't get wrapped up.

Finally, the game doesn't allow you to save and load, instead employing a checkpoint autosave system. This is really good during the first playthrough as it makes your decisions feel like they matter, but being able to save/load at will would have made subsequent playthroughs where you're making different choices to see the content much less repetitive.

It feels like I'm slagging this game a bunch, but on balance I still liked it a lot and feel like it was worth full price. At its core, it's a really beautiful interactive story. At a solid 7/10, with a playthrough clocking in at only about two hours, it's worth a shot.
