When a commercial airliner develops engine problems on a trans-Pacific flight and the pilot loses his nerve, it is up to the washed-up co-pilot Dan Roman to bring the plane in safely.
One disaster after another happens on this trans-Pacific flight. You have the pilot who loses his nerve! The washed-up co-pilot. The milquetoast flight engineer. The young hot shot second officer. And a cabin full of passengers with every range of problems and personalities there could possibly be. Here you have the Duke in a role he didn't want, and a movie with the title song that became Duke's theme. What else could any John Wayne fan want? It's all here, and then some.
The High and the Mighty (1954)

This overblown title is misleading for a movie that is a mainstream and uninspired airplane in trouble film. It's not terrible, but there aren't even pretensions here of greatness beyond the title. John Wayne? He's fun to see without a cowboy hat, and he's got great presence, but don't expect much from him, either.

This is a classic "ship of fools" story that has an early Hollywood example in the 1939 "Stagecoach" which featured Wayne and another co-star here, Claire Trevor. In that fashion, which involves each character being defined and contrasted to the others in a moment of crisis, the story is one about psychology more than survival. Who will be strong, who will be the threat, and what skeletons will come from which closets?

Or that's the general idea of these kinds of plots. Here, nothing much will turn up on any of these fronts. In the sad decline of Hollywood through the 1950s, as writers left for t.v. and money grew thin, stories like these, and filming decisions like shooting a whole movie inside a plane (cheap and effective) throw some limitations in our face.

Director William Wellman is one of the stalwarts of Old Hollywood, and he's done a competent job here—the pacing and the overall feel of things is reasonable if not special. The producers include Wayne himself, and it's got to be tricky when the money for the director and crew is coming from the leading actor. Both cast and crew were miserable about shooting conditions (cold outside, cramped inside). And the cinematographer struggled to make the widescreen shooting work in the tight space.

So why watch this? Why indeed! The movie has some fans, but even praise is usually mixed with misgivings. The movie did undergo an expensive restoration (Wayne as producer/owner of the film had kept the original himself and it was damaged in storage). The score by Tiomkin is overbearing but it won an Oscar all the same. You can look for Robert Stack as pilot, and recall that he revisited that role in the spoof "Airplane!"

You might even remember the source and inspiration for "Airplane!" as the forgotten 1957 "Zero Hour!" (note they even kept the exclamation point) which is also a flawed but certainly more exciting film than "The High and the Mighty." If you do watch this one, you might like it, but it's no classic. High and Mighty is 52 years old now and I'm afraid it shows it. Most of the reviewers of this film have been very generous in their comments, but appear to have their rose-coloured spectacles on.Billed now as the first disaster movie, the real disasters were the special effects, the woeful script, and the lamentable lack of tension throughout the endless film.Thankfully the little boy on board had the good fortune to sleep through it all.

Don't get me wrong; I saw this film in St.Ives,Cornwall, as a lad, and thoroughly enjoyed it; but must you judge a film on how it appeared to you many years ago? Today, I didn't see much Oscar-winning material in a film that knew where it was going, but had no idea on how to get there.Maintaining tension in such a close confine, requires a great script and great directing. This was achieved with memorable effect in 12 Angry Men, in spades. The High and the Mighty is star-studded but none of them gets a actorial break, except Jan Sterling for 8 minutes.; John Wayne's agent should have looked the other way, and Claire Trevor drifts helplessly from scene to scene, to little effect.Robert Newton relentlessly gazes thoughtfully off-screen,determined to keep his face in shot; even a declaration of love fails to move his impassive stance.Robert Stack reprises his Totally Wooden Introspective stereotype, and fails completely to convince, at least me, that he's a pilot with a problem. To my mind, it's as if the director,Wellman, said, "Well folks, there's the set; now do your stuff".Actors, every actor,MUST be directed so that every second they're in front of the camera, is used to further the story; looking at some scenes in this film, I had the distinct impression that Wellman had left the building. The only bright spot was to see, that in 1954, they still had Boeing B-17G's flying around!
