About This Game

The White Laboratory is a sandbox style physics-based tower defense and RTS game in which you modularly build and command robotic structures, operating across a facility in the atmosphere of a remote gas planet.

It is about time for our quadrennial operation check through various parts of the facility. In the series of missions, combine robotic modular geometry components into different structures to adapt to combat situations. Build ground defenses around, send propeller air probes, attract and transfer scrap resources, and anything else the physics allows. Clean up anything unwanted to complete the maintenance task.

Crazy physics-based gameplay

99% of the stuff is physically simulated, affecting how objects move and behave in action. Consider physical phenomenon when making strategic decisions. e.g The bullet bounces off non-targets. Obstacles or drones can physically affect opponent rushing in. Structural balancing...

Strategy focused, multipurpose robotic components for fast in-place live construction

Things are made of robotic components which can be served for multiple purposes. This allows for fast building of functional small structures in realtime with pause. There is also no upgrading of things such as ground defense towers, just modify them or build more onto them to adapt to new situation.

Open and reusable game mechanics

Objects will be reusable for other purpose/or have additional usage with more sandbox elements introduced.

Experiment, sandbox and survival modes

Experiment mode (aka. campaign) explores a wide range of gameplay with robotic component combinations, including expansionary defense, conquest and production etc.
Sandbox supports building and testing of varies structural designs with large material supply and completing additional challenges.
Survival mode is fortress defense.

Clean metallic esthetics, floating high in atmosphere.

The clean style matches the sci-fi background while giving clear visual on structural design. Also supports colorbindness. 7ad7b8b382

The user interface is very floaty and hard to use. It's difficult to actually click on the button you want or move things to where you want them to go. Tedious and tests patience, rather than an enjoyable experience. Not to mention if you don't grab your building materials instantly then they are damaged and the level snowballs into becoming more difficult.. GAaahhhhh these white screens are horrendous... building along then BAM White for 5 seconds or soo.... This "feature" or bug can die.
. Honestly thought this would be just a 'meh' gimmick game, but it's WAY MORE then I expected!
Build and manage flying machines, multiple defence lines, create your own unique turrets... and so much more!

It actually really feels like an RTS too because you have to manage/ move around towers around, and grab new pieces from fallen enemies, and quickly figure out the best ways to defend against different enemies.

DEFINITELY give this a try!. Has transparent failure states that can cause you to waste alot of time.. Game's pretty fun, physics are a bit wonky but okay. My real problem with the game is the camera control, typical top down view for TD but there's no way to change the camera angle from up and down, limiting your build options. The building system is also wack, you can only connect pieces linearly, meaning that everything has to be an offshoot of something else. This is okay until you try building larger constructs, in which case the lack of connections makes the whole thing wobbly as hell. This basically makes it where you're stuck building small stuff because larger constructs just aren't viable. Really limits the potential that the game has.. Very challenging.. This game is really interesting , the physics and customization of the tower is really good . However , there are still some bugs and problem with the 3D vision. Consider it is a indie game and single operator game , i will it is good enough already. Hope to see more update and bug fixing<3.. Very neat game. Sometimes seems more RTS than TD, but it works well for it.

Pros:

  • Awesome concept

  • Good execution of concept - the fact that enemies are made out of the same blocks as your units and can be in any format makes a lot of possibilities

  • Simple but good looking graphics

  • Occasionally funny physics - got a few 'pfft's out of me

  • Really cool creation of towers/units once you understand some of the physics - creating a network of flying drones with laser relay mirror-glass-thingies to attack enemies without risking the actual laser turrets is something I really enjoyed

    Cons:
    • Occasionally wonky physics - The blocks aren't held together very stiffly, so building large structures is somewhat more difficult, and ejecting a block from a structure makes them have collision problems with the structure it used to be part of.

    • Somewhat hard to get the hang of the flight system - I recommend smaller crafts that are completely balanced with discs only on top (you'll get what that means when you play)

    • The transition between the time-slow when building and real-time is somewhat annoyingly slow sometimes when trying to make little adjustments to towers on the go

Overall, I recommend. Good game, mostly good execution.. The White Laboratory strikes a unique point between RTS strategy game and Tower Defense game. Both sides of the game seemlessly merge into one, allowing players to essentially design and construct their own towers for defense, or vehicles for offense. Neither are reduntant, both towers and vehicles will be neccasary to play the game.

The actual strategy of the game is both interesting and simple. Fast gun = more bullets less accuracy, slow gun = less bullets more accuracy. From this simple rule, players can utilise spin blocks to make various towers to defend their base, or even make hybrid towers which can be both accurate and slow, or innacurate and fast when needed.

The games graphics are very good. The animations feel both rigid but fluid, and perfectly fits the game's theme.

My primary concern is the physics optimisation leaves much to be desired. I'd definitely want levels to be more split, and for the game to unload unnescassary rigidbodies, which take up precious processor power. I can understand that a lot of work has probably been put into optimisation already, but it has further to go.

I'd also note that the game, in it's current state, still has a lot more content needed. It's got a decent amount at the moment, but I'd love to see a proper campaign, or something. I've also had trouble completing many of the latter levels due to bad physics performance, the biggest suspect being "reflective relations", which somehow manages to bring my game to an absolute crawl, when it was already struggling to keep up. I'd suspect this is due to latter objects being loaded when they aren't even needed yet.

All in all, the game is certainly a great concept, and has a worth while amount of playtime, but is let down by it's physics being recourse intensive (at least, for me). It certainly will be going places however.
