A greedy developer unwittingly hatches a gigantic baby moth upon Tokyo, while Godzilla strikes once again.
A greedy developer has placed huge machines to suck dry a part of the ocean near Tokyo so he can put luxury condos there. After a storm, a giant egg washes up on the beach nearby and is immediately put on public display. The developer's plans go awry when he disrupts Godzilla's rest and the monster goes stomping through Tokyo again. It's up to the elderly Mothra, and then to its two offspring, to save Tokyo from destruction.
GODZILLA VS. MOTHRA (AKA GODZILLA VS. THE THING) (3+ outta 5 stars) I remember going to see this movie at a kiddie matinée as a tot. The ads never showed what "The Thing" was... but I expected some big, mean, scary creature that would be even more formidable than 'Zilla himself! I sure wasn't expecting... a giant moth. (Or a pair of baby slugs for that matter.) Now, of course, this all sounds pretty ridiculous to all the non-Godzilla-fans out there... but, of all the Godzilla films ever made, this is the one that is most fondly-remembered. There are some great scenes in this one: Godzilla's best entrance ever (he comes bursting out of the earth tail-first) Godzilla taking apart some grand Japanese architecture piece by piece is still impressive even when you *know* that it is only an actor in a suit taking apart a miniature model. Plus there are the two, tiny twins who come to Tokyo from their remote island paradise to ask for their giant radioactive back after it washes up on a Japanese beach. Mothra is, well, he's a giant moth... and he's on the verge of dying... so how much of a fight is he going to put up? But he only has to occupy 'Zilla until the egg containing his successor hatches. Anyway, silly as it all sounds, the movie works really well... definitely the 'Zilla movie to watch if you've never seen one before.
One thing I have to say before I start. I forgot to put one thing in my GODZILLA VS MEGALON comment: The original Japanese theatrical poster has a pyschadellic background. Because when you watch the movie and listen to the background music, you can imagine the psychadellic stuff dude. Now where was I? This is a sequel to 1961's MOTHRA and a sequel to 1962's KING KONG VS GODZILLA. Oringally (after Toho came up with the idea to do a film with that giant Frankenstein monster), they wanted to let Frankenstein fight Mothra. But instead they let Godzilla do it. So Frank ended up in FRANKENSTEIN CONQUERS THE WORLD (1965), (this idea came when they wanted to use Godzilla to fight Kong). The music is masterful, that it frequently played in various Godzilla movies. Do the twin fairies annoy you? They don't annoy me. There is a striking moral to this film: Nature should not be fooled around. The special effects typical. Mothra looks like an old carpet. And the high speed movements look a bit like stop motion. Mothra grabbing Godzilla by the tail paying homage to a cartoonish scene in KING KONG VS GODZILLA. We are not scared. The camera zooms sluggishly in on G's face trying to make it scary. Nice try. But you made us chuckle. But Eiji Tsurubaya did a great job on the Mothra hatchlings. The film was released in the US by A.I.P. as GODZILLA VS THE THING. In the poster you see G fight a squid-like beast. The kaiju flick was released in France in 1995! Mothra returned in GHIDRAH THE THREE HEADED MONSTER (1964), GODZILLA VS THE SEA MONSTER ([1966] read my comment at the old comment domain called Matthew), DESTROY ALL MONSTERS ([1968] read my comment at the old comment domain called Matthew), and in 1992 she fought G again in GODZILLA VS MOTHRA: THE BATTLE FOR EARTH. Plus from 1996 to 1998 she had a trilogy of her own called the REBIRTH OF MOTHRA trilogy. They were family frilendly flicks (i'd give them a G or PG). She also returned in GMK in 2001 (comment on that comming soon). But now she is back in an official sequel to the 1961 MOTHRA called GODZILLA X MOTHRA X MECHAGODZILLA: TOKYO S.O.S. it is due this December.

There is a scene included only in the US version featuring the American Navy firing frontier missiles at Godzilla as the monster walks along the beach. However, Toho themselves shot this sequence and intended to include it in the Japanese version of the film, but worried that it might make Japanese viewers uncomfortable to see American military using weapons on Japanese soil. As a result, Toho scrapped the sequence, though it was included in the American version. Nonetheless the US version does feature several brief differences on top.
