Getting through the first half of their five-year mission, Captain Kirk and the USS Enterprise crew now venture into uncharted territories. After a devastating attack by a massive army of unknown aliens, Kirk and his crew find themselves stranded on an unknown planet with no means of contacting the Federation or each other. The alien warlord Krall seeks an ancient weapon called the Abronath that Kirk has kept after an unsuccessful diplomatic mission. Reunited and aided by the alien warrior Jaylah, Kirk and crew must fight to survive and take on this deadly menace with a strong hatred for the Federation. Will they be able to destroy the new danger before it's too late?
After stopping off at Starbase Yorktown, a remote outpost on the fringes of Federation space, the USS Enterprise, halfway into their five-year mission, is destroyed by an unstoppable wave of unknown aliens. With the crew stranded on an unknown planet and with no apparent means of rescue, they find themselves fighting against a ruthless enemy with a well-earned hatred of the Federation and everything it stands for. Only a rebellious alien warrior can help them reunite and leave the planet to stop this deadly menace from beginning a possible galactic war.
A group of amateur actors gathers in a film studio to parody the nineteen sixties TV-series "Star Trek". The actors make jokes that are hilariously funny. Then they go somewhere and there are a lot of explosions. The enemies are ugly, so it's OK to kill them. After 122 minutes the film ends.
Star Trek: Beyond is here, and it is truly unlike any other Star Trek movie you've ever seen. Directed by Justin Lin, who directed four entries in the Fast and Furious franchise, the film continues on the more fast paced and slightly bombastic feel of the rebooted franchise. Star Trek: Beyond is often funny, fast paced and action packed, and features a cool new villain. The film is also co- written by Simon Pegg, and thus has a lot more moments of humor, sometimes resembling the Marvel mold more than Star Trek.

Star Trek films have historically been inconsistent when it comes to humor, some like Star Trek: The Voyage Home or Star Trek (2009) have been very funny, and some like Star Trek: Wrath of Khan, forwent humor for seriousness. This film may just be the funniest Star Trek film yet, because it's not quite as silly as some of the other films, but manages to have a lot of good quips. The film's sense of humor is most likely a product of Simon Pegg co-writing the film, and that has proved to be a great decision. It should be stated that the humor does make Star Trek: Beyond feel slightly more like a summer blockbuster than a Star Trek film, and they are different.

Star Trek Beyond is structured slightly more like an action film, as the pacing grows in tempo until the end of the film when it culminates in a big finale. This is more consistent with the pacing of the rebooted franchise, however the film never quite elevates like the previous two films did. The action sequences in this film are very good, which comes as no surprise given that Lin, who is experienced in shooting action sequences was in the helm. One surprise of this film was the villain character, Krall.

The rebooted franchise of Star Trek movies has done an amazing job forming well-rounded villains. The villain in this film feels weak at the beginning, but as the film progresses his motives become more clear. Both Nero and Khan were good villains, and while Krall isn't as well rounded he is a serviceable villain. That being said the other characters in the film aren't very well developed, besides Captain Kirk, who is given some development.

All-in-all this is probably the weakest of the rebooted franchise in my opinion, but that doesn't mean it's not a good movie, it is. Star Trek Beyond is very entertaining, fast paced, action-packed, funny, and has a very good villain. The film is a very good time at the theaters, and is fairly family friendly, for those who love summer blockbusters this is a perfect summer movie for you. This episode cuts right to the core of the series’s original appeal, giving the terrific cast a chance to play against one another in a straightforward story. It’s not exactly bold, but “Beyond” does satisfy.
Source. In story terms, it seems most likely that Carol Marcus has left the Enterprise for unknown reasons prior to the events of Beyond. The adversary Krall is ultimately identified as a deformed Balthazer M. Edison, captain of the U.S.S. Franklin, a ship that, according to Scotty, disappeared without a trace in 2164, shortly after the foundation of the Federation of Planets. Krall/Edison is also identified as a former M.A.C.O. (Starfleet Marines), and mentions fighting during the Xindi War (2153-2154) as well as the Romulan-Earth Wars (2156-2160). Especially the mentioning of the Xindi War is interesting, because this places him directly on board the Enterprise NX-01, during the events of the third season of Enterprise (2001). He later states that he became disillusioned when the Federation was founded, and there was no apparent need for soldiers anymore. He received command of the U.S.S. Franklin in recognition of his services for Starfleet, and later disappeared. Some viewers have noted that this does not seem to fit in the official Star Trek timeline. If Edison received command of a ship after the Romulan Wars, how could it be a warp 4 ship? By the time the wars had ended, the Enterprise NX-01 and the Columbia NX-02 had already been flying with warp 5 engines for many years. So this is a potential error on the part of the writers of Star Trek Beyond.

However, there is a fitting explanation for this. According to the Star Trek timeline, warp 2.5 was achieved in 2142, and warp 3 in 2145. Since we know that the Enterprise NX-01 launched with an experimental warp 5 engine in 2151, the prototype warp-4 vessel U.S.S. Franklin must have been built somewhere in the late 2140s. This is sustained by several other observations: the ship is very close in design and size to the Enterprise NX-02 (relatively flat with the nacelles almost directly attached to the saucer section), it has transporters that were only used for cargo (Enterprise NX-01 was the first with a transporter that could also transport humans), and it still has conventional torpedoes for weapons (Enterprise NX-01 started out with these, but soon switched to photon torpedoes). So the U.S.S. Franklin must have been used as a cargo ship long before Edison received command of it. By that time, it must have been at least 11 years old, capable of only warp 4 and without transporters for personal transfer. Since Edison was already upset about losing his job as a MACO, being offered an obsolete ship may have added to his frustration.
