After a successful assignment to save hostages from pirates in Somalia, Barney Ross and his team of mercenaries, the "Expendables" are invited by Mr. Church to kill the corrupt General Garza, who is the dictator of the Vilena Island in the Gulf of Mexico. Mr. Church offers 5 million dollars and Barney travels with his partner Lee Christmas in their plane to Vilena to meet their local contact, Sandra. They have an incident with one troop and they flee from the island, but Sandra refuses to leave her country and is left behind. They investigate and discover that Church is actually from CIA, that wants them to do the dirty work to destroy the powerful drug dealer and rogue FBI agent James Munroe, who is using the island to grow coke. But Barney also feels divided between staying safe in USA or risky his life to save Sandra and his own soul.
Barney Ross leads the "Expendables", a band of highly skilled mercenaries including knife enthusiast Lee Christmas, martial arts expert Yin Yang, heavy weapons specialist Hale Caesar, demolitionist Toll Road and loose-cannon sniper Gunner Jensen. When the group is commissioned by the mysterious Mr. Church to assassinate the merciless dictator of a small South American island, Barney and Lee head to the remote locale to scout out their opposition. Once there, they meet with local rebel Sandra and discover the true nature of the conflict engulfing the city. When they escape the island and Sandra stays behind, Ross must choose to either walk away and save his own life - or attempt a suicidal rescue mission that might just save his soul.
When I first became aware of The Expendables, I was certain that this was going to be the most fun I would have at the cinema in 2010. I bought into the hype, all right, thinking back on my childhood and the cream of the Eighties action crop. It was a time when men were men, women were barely there and more bullets were fired in two hours than in all of World War II. I went into the screening ready for a mix of cheese and awesomeness.

What I got was something far less. The Expendables has one major problem: it doesn't know what kind of film it wants to be. It seems Sylvester Stallone wasn't sure if he should make a balls to the wall Eighties action throwback or a serious examination of the effect war has on men who live for battle. In the end, he tried to make the movie both, and in trying to be both, it was neither. The much-vaunted all-star cast turned out to be largely wasted, with Stallone and Jason Statham taking up much of the running time, and in Statham's case half of that was an unnecessary subplot about his ex-girlfriend. If Stallone had decided to follow this side of the story properly - the impact of the job on personal relationships - instead of using it to seemingly pad out the running time, then maybe it wouldn't have seemed so contrived.

Of the rest of the cast, only Mickey Rourke leaves much of an impression. His one major scene, recounting an event in Bosnia, steals the show and left me wanting to learn his story, not that of the Expendables. The action is decent but many of the most mouth-watering set pieces, such as a fight between Dolph Lundgren and Jet Li, are poorly shot. Terry Crews gives us the most memorable action sequence of the movie when he decimates bad guys with an automatic shotgun, but the film is otherwise uninspired.

The Expendables is about as average a film as you can find - in fact, it's below average. It wasn't the best action film of the Summer, never mind of all time, as some might have you believe. If the cast wasn't full of big names, how would this have differed in any way from the straight-to-DVD action schlock that you can find in bargain bins everywhere? It's a wasted opportunity and one that is far from essential viewing. The Expendables is an old-school, kick-ass action movie, but for 2010. The fighting is rougher, the use of knives and shooting are bloodier and the explosions are bigger. What hasn't changed though is the awful dialogue, and true to 80's tradition the female characters are not given much to do.

Old Sly Stallone is never given enough credit, he's a nominated director, writer and actor. Compared to his other 80's counter parts you'd expect him to still be a huge bankable star, but that just hasn't been the case and he's seen career ups and downs. Following up the surprisingly great Rambo, Stallone is on slightly lesser form here, with an almost homage to the action flicks he starred in or went head to head with himself in the 80's.

There's lot to like about The Expendables, naturally there's lot of action set ups and some nice 'buddy' chemistry between Jason, Jet and Sly. Eric Roberts put's in a good performance and it's great to see him in a blockbuster. There's welcomed cameo's from Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis. This action has an array of old and new action stars including Dolph Lundgren and Steve Austin. The car Barney Ross (Stallone) drives is similar to the one in Cobra (1986) and there are some other nods in there.

For me Lee Christmas (Jason Statham) stands out the most, and while Mickey Rourke is given some meaty dialogue it seems too heavy for the theatrics of the rest of the film.

Don't watch expecting anything spectacular or special, The Expendables is just R rated fun with a nostalgic cast that will leave you with a grin on your face. A who's who of classic action stars light up the screen for pure combustible entertainment in Sly Stallone's The Expendables, a sort of "Dirty Dozen" meets "Inglourious Basterds"--and then some.
When Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), the leader of an elite mercenary team called "The Expendables", is offered a job by CIA operative Mr Church (Bruce Willis) to assassinate General Garza (David Zayas), a corrupt dictator in Vilena, an island in the Gulf of Mexico, Ross and his knife specialist Lee Christmas (Jason Statham) scout out the island and learn that their real target is rogue FBI agent James Munroe (Eric Roberts), who is keeping Garza in power as a figurehead in order to fund his drug trade. Consequently, Ross refuses the job. When Munroe takes Garza's daughter Sandra (Giselle Itié) hostage, however, Ross must decide whether to return safely to the U.S. or to go back to Vilena and save her. He and the rest of his team—marital arts expert Yin Yang (Jet Li), weapons specialist Hale Caesar (Terry Crews), and demolitionist Toll Road (Randy Couture)—decide to go back ...at the risk of their own lives. The Expendables is a tribute movie to action/war films from the 1980s and early '90s. Directed by Sylvester Stallone, it features among its cast Stallone and cameos of other actors from such movies, such as Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwartznegger, and Mickey Rourke. The screenplay was written by Stallone and screenwriter Dave Callaham. A comic book prequel, written by American comic book writer Chuck Dixon and illustrated by Esteve Polls, was released in May 2010. The Expendables was followed by The Expendables 2 (2012) (2012) and The Expendables 3 (2014) (2014). The Expendables 4 is in the works, with a release date set for 2018. The Expendables fly a Grumman HU-16 Albatross. It has a black paint job with the Expendables logo, a black hawk on a globe, and the name Global Wildlife Conservancy written on it. Munroe kills Garza, he and henchman Paine (Steve Austin) take Sandra hostage, and the fighting starts up again. Ross blows the charges inside the palace, destroying the entire compound. In the fracas that follows, Christmas and Yang kill The Brit (Gary Daniels), and Toll kills Paine by burning him alive. Ross and Caesar destroy the helicopter before Munroe can escape. Munroe shoots Ross in the shoulder, but Ross and Christmas kill Munroe while Ross explains that he came back only to rescue Sandra. Later, as the team prepares to leave Vilena, Ross gifts his mission payment to Sandra so that she can start rebuilding the island. Back home again, the team celebrates their victory at Tool's tattoo parlor along with team sniper Gunner Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), recovering from the gunshot to his back. Christmas and Tool (Mickey Rourke) play a game of knife throwing. In the final scene, Christmas composes a poem for Tool, then turns around and perfectly hits the bullseye. Arnold Schwarzenegger is in the film as a cameo appearance, he was not paid, and he was only on set for about 6 hours total. The scenes with Schwarzenegger were shot in a studio at night, so the governor was not filming during his political working time. Yes, during its theatrical run Stallone announced via Twitter that he was working on an Extended Cut of his movie, like he did with Rambo. So far this Extended Cut has only been available for a limited number of customers of the Video On Demand services, such as AT&T U-Verse, Comcast or EpixHD in the United States but will be released in late 2011 on Blu-ray. In total the Extended Cut is approx. 10 minutes longer than the well-known Theatrical Version and features more than 200 changes and especially several characters got more screen time and their actions are now a bit more credible. Especially Dolph Lundgren's character profits from these changes and in conclusion one can say that the Extended Cut is probably a better version than the Theatrical Version and a must for all fans of this movie. One shot had to be removed, showing a hero sadistically twisting a knife into a guard's neck, in order to obtain a "15" classification. The cut was made in accordance with Guidelines and policy of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). An uncut "18" classification was available. Only the Blu-ray disc version features the uncensored 18-classified cut.
