Meet Daniel Larusso, a mild-mannered New Jersey teenager who has to move from his native state to Los Angeles, California when his mother was offered a job there. He thought that he was going to have a nice house with a pool, then he finds out that his new home is a crummy apartment. He tries to fit into the Californian crowd, what he finds is a nice girl from his new high school, and punks (of a karate school named the Cobra Kai) who want to make his life miserable. Then, a Japanese handyman named Keusuke Miyagi comes to aid Daniel. He asked Miyagi to teach him karate, which he does (in a roundabout way). Daniel and Miyagi then developed a great relationship and he wanted to teach the karate fighting punks a lesson, so he signs up for a karate tournament. Daniel is determined to win.
After leaving his hometown in New Jersey, the gangly teenager, Daniel LaRusso, arrives in sunny Los Angeles with his single mother, Lucille. Like a fish out of water, the shy newcomer will be up against the difficulty of fitting in--and on top of that--he will soon find himself being targeted in school by Johnny Lawrence's gang of local karate-practising bullies. Under those circumstances and constantly picked on, Daniel will turn to the building's inscrutable caretaker and unexpected master martial arts mentor, Mr Miyagi, who will agree to teach Daniel karate for the upcoming tournament. Eventually, taken under Miyagi's wing, the apt pupil will learn a compassionate and more delicate form of karate; however, is the inexperienced Daniel a match for brutal Johnny and Cobra Kai Dojo's lethal karate?
It looked as if director John G. Avildsen wanted to remake his movie (Rocky – 1976), however with teen Italian lead, gorgeous Adrianna, and Miyagi instead of Mickey ! But it turned out to be totally another thing of its own, which also had success and turned into franchise. You can follow that "karate" success and its influence on other movies of the same era through (The Last Dragon – 1985), (No Retreat, No Surrender – 1986), or even (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – 1990). Though, (The Karate Kid) will live longer. Defining the reason why could be hard in a movie has nearly all the right ingredients. But I see it clear. It's considerably that script.

Scriptwriter Robert Mark Kamen made brilliant and balanced mix of martial arts, romance and drama. And showed a right way for how the unoriginal underdog story could be excellently recycled to be original apart.

And if the script was the movie's crown, then this crown's jewel should be the strong characterization, especially of the unforgettable mentor; Mr. Miyagi. He's not the wicked Japanese only, but also an old soldier, whom had his wife and son killed, as we knew in a brief yet fine scene when he was excessively drinking. So he is a wounded man who hates violence, misses his family, and above all is not perfect; living lonely, trying to find balance in his life. And he finally has the chance to be a father of Daniel as a substitute for his late son (noticing the absence of Daniel's father too), where they become the best of friends. Hence, it's more than just a relationship of a green karate student with an experienced instructor; it's a tale of a son who meets his lost father, father who meets his lost son, and 2 friends who positively affect each other's life for good, so the human, plus the karate, lessons unfold. Ahh, can you name one of today's made-for-teens movies, that has human characters, pains, and lessons ?! I don't think so !

Moreover, that certain "reestablishment" in the character of the Japanese on the American big screen; to be as nothing of its antecedents, and maybe the most important accomplishment done by such a movie. Pat Morita as Kesuke Miyagi was a very belated sorry for Hollywood's long history of dealing with the Asian people through the worst stereotypes and clichés ever.

Look at the nationalities of the bullied humble characters as the minority of USA, then look at the bully, not honorable at all, wasp wealthy brats; and you'll understand that it isn't just another repeated story about ordinary conflict between 2 guys over one girl. This is how this movie guarantees depth, cause, and numerous viewings.

Director John G. Avildsen made it sentimentally wonderful. It's clear how he loved the story, creating it as aesthetical, enjoyable, and warm as well. Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita's chemistry was flawless. They both did top-notch. However my higher appreciation must go to Morita, who marvelously proved that he wasn't yet another comedian as everybody thought at the moment. And I had the best time watching Elisabeth Shue; she was one heck of an explosive motive; being – truly – every boy's dream as one sexy angel !

Now, after many virtues, let's see the vices. First off, I didn't like it when the lead showed up at the amusement arcade and his girl was angry of him !! It's supposed to be the opposite; as she was the one who didn't come to the last date, and she was the one in other person's arms, so she was the one who should apologize, not him !! For more essential vices; the end was very fast. The competition has been briefed in one pop song like a MTV music video. Not to mention the easiness of it, where the magic of Miyagi's hands does all the wonder. That's all. And, accordingly, they're too little vices.

(The Karate Kid) is one in a decade movie. It has every boy's favorite story, mentor, and girl, all made in a very effective way, which clicked at the moment, and still does. Daniel and his family have just moved to America. When he goes to school, he is constantly bullied by a black-belt karate student. Then, "The Old One" a.k.a. Myagi, who says he can train Daniel. However, his lessons are very unusual. For example, Daniel is reduced to painting fences and waxing cars. These lessons are not what they appear to be, but instead, they teach young Daniel how to defend himself.

This movie is also not what it appears to be. To quote Roger Ebert: "I took one look at the title and figured it was either (a) a sequel to Toenails of Vengeance, or (b) an adventure pitting Ricky Schroder against the Megaloth Man. I was completely wrong. THE KARATE KID was one of the nice surprises of 1984 -- an exciting, sweet-tempered, heart-warming story with one of the most interesting friendships in a long time."

Like Roger Ebert said, "The Karate Kid" is not an average kung-fu movie. No. It's a drama that starts out like another clichéd high school movie, but adopts a message and drama. After Daniel finds the meaning behind his training, the movie starts to head into a drama.

After Daniel learns the meaning of his lessons, the film gets dramatic. He learns that things aren't what they seem to be, and that karate is for self-defense; not fighting.

I remember having to watch this film for "P.A.C.E.," which was a program to help me remember and do better in school and crap like that. They had a lot of weird lessons and only made me watch "The Karate Kid" to teach me that things aren't always what they seem.

The main flaws in "Karate kid" are that the bathroom scene was too unrealistic and that there was a lot of swearing that might offend the younger ones. But, it was a good movie with enough heart, along with a moral.

It appears as a crappy, clichéd kung-fu movie, but ends up looking like a great drama.

Feel free to send me a Private Message regarding this comment. As in the Rocky films, Avildsen's only directorial strategy is to delay the final confrontation for so long that all the audience's pent-up frustration explodes with it. It's primitive, predatory stuff.
High school senior Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and his widowed mother Lucille (Randee Heller) move from New Jersey to Reseda, California (near Los Angeles) for her new job, but Daniel finds it hard to fit in with the West Coast crowd, thanks particularly to three uberbullies—Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and his flunkies, Tommy (Rob Garrison) and Bobby (Ron Thomas), who all belong to the same local dojo (karate school) run by ex-Special Forces Vietnam Veteran John Kreese (Martin Kove). When Daniel has to get the apartment maintenance man, Kesuki Miyagi (Pat Morita), to repair a broken faucet, he discovers that the elderly Mr Miyagi is actually a martial arts master and that he's willing to train Daniel in self defense. However, Mr Miyagi's training seems more like he's really trying to get free labor, asking Daniel to do things like sand the floor, paint the fence, and wax the car. The Karate Kid was taken from a script by screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen. It is the first in a series of four Karate Kid movies, followed by The Karate Kid Part II (1986) (1986), The Karate Kid Part III (1989) (1989), and The Next Karate Kid (1994) (1994). The Karate Kid movies have no relation to the DC Comics superhero also known as "Karate Kid". A remake, The Karate Kid (2010), was released in 2010. Ali (Elisabeth Shue) knew that Johnny and his goons were coming by the sounds of their bikes, so she kicked the ball away, hoping that Daniel would go after it, thus keeping him from getting beat up. Unfortunately, it didn't work too well. Mr Miyagi considers himself to be Japanese. In the film, Miyagi tells Daniel that he is from Okinawa, a chain of islands south of Japan, and mentions to Daniel that he was part of the 442nd Infantry, which was an all Japanese-American Unit from World War II, one of the units most highly decorated for valor (so explaining why Miyagi has an Army Congressional Medal of Honor amongst his possessions). It was also indicated that his wife and unborn child were held in the Manzanar relocation camp in California while he was deployed. In the film, Miyagi does mention to Daniel that he learned karate from his father, an Okinawan fisherman. Morita was actually an American citizen, born in California of Japanese parents. To play the role of Mr Miyagi, Morita had to adopt a Japanese accent, since he spoke perfect English. Manzanar was a camp established shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, which brought the United States into World War II. The camp held immigrant Japanese and American-born Japanese citizens during the war by. The foundation of the camp remains one of the most controversial subjects of the USA's involvement in World War II chiefly because of the forced relocation of American citizens of Japanese descent by executive order from then-president Franklin Roosevelt—done without Congress having first suspended the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus (a privilege that makes the provisions of the Bill of Rights among others meaningful, as showcased in the American Civil War when the privilege was indeed suspended). Though the character's history is slightly vague, Miyagi was likely sent there with his wife and unborn child when the executive order was issued. Miyagi then volunteered to fight in Europe with the 442nd Infantry and was in Europe when his wife and child died during birth. In the Japanese language, -san is a polite title that is used after a person's name, the equivalent of Mr., Mrs., or Miss. Daniel could just as easily refer to Mr Miyagi as "Miyagi-san". Daniel and Johnny face each other in the final match of the All Valley Karate championship, Johnny having won his semifinal match, and Daniel's opponent having been disqualified for an illegal kick that injured Daniel's knee. Daniel scores one point against Johnny with a blow to the chest and a second point with a scissor leg followed by a blow to the back of the head, giving Johnny a nose bleed. When the match pauses for Johnny to be looked at, Kreese orders him to sweep Daniel's injured leg. At first, Johnny balks, but Kreese reminds him of the Cobra Kai dojo's motto "No Mercy". The match continues with Johnny scoring two points against Daniel. At 2-2, the next to score a point wins the match. Daniel goes to high kick Johnny with his injured leg, but Johnny sweeps it (grabs the leg and delivers an illegal blow to the back of Daniel's injured knee). Despite the pain, Daniel returns to the ring, assuming the crane stance and waiting for Johnny to make his move. When he does, Daniel leaps into the air and high kicks Johnny in the chin. For that, Daniel gains a third point and wins the championship. In the final scene, Johnny takes the trophy from the Master of Ceremonies, hands it Daniel, and congratulates him. "We did it, Mr Miyagi!", Daniel whoops, as Miyagi smiles admirably.
