9.7\/10. - Absolutely phenomenal. Atmospheric, scenic, incredible story but super confusing!
The game is actually so damn good. I expected a complete mindwreck but oh my goodness I was not prepared for this game. There is SO much detail\/confusion going on from start to finish and it kept me wanting more and more. The lore was brilliant and the way the game kept switching up was fantastic. Such a unique horror yet again. I personally think this is better than the first Layers of Fear in terms of atmosphere\/horror\/ambience & overall experience. It has chase sequences, actual death mechanics leaving you at a bit more risk when playing.
The reason it's not getting a 10\/10 is quite simple. I feel like the story is a little too short. I finished it in 5 hours, which is not bad at all but I just wanted more and more. (I do believe there is multiple ending's though?) & on top of that, the antagonist sometimes grabbed you within half a second of discovering he was there....this irritated me quite a bit.
Overall: Worth the money, even better with a discount\/sale if possible in the future. It's a great game. I am excited to try find alternative ending's\/changes.
Well done Developers!. A hauntingly wonderful story about a broken family that takes a bit longer to rise the story arc then the first Layers of Fear.
Intelligent writing, obscene imagery, an incredible beautiful soundtrack and high quality voice acting.
The story is a bit more cryptic and to get the full understanding the reading of notes is necessary.
I love all the games from Bloober so far and this makes no difference, the last chapters are the strongest in my opinion.
If you liked the first one give this a chance, just be patient with how slow the story unfolds and you won't be disappointed.
<3 Thank you, Bloober Team. It's clear that a lot of work was put into the setting, graphics and sound as the game is very atmospheric and the sound design is eerie and unsettling at times even if some of the cues are a bit obvious.
Gameplay wise it's a walking simulator, the first couple of jumpscares got me but after that I just kind of shrugged and the majority of the game felt quite boring to me. I'll confess, I didn't finish the game as the first encounter with the monster was frustrating due to the clunky door controls and I'm honestly tired of seeing the same 'big bad chases you at scripted events' trope that seems to be in a lot of horror games. For a game that claims to be a psychological horror I found it to lean heavily on the same tired mechanics of jumpscares, loud noises and monster chases that is prevalent in a lot if not most horror games which I personally found more annoying than scary.
You can find bits and pieces of a story from audio clips found on items scattered around the levels, though it came across as more convoluted than anything and I never paid attention or felt interested in the story overall.. I want to start this review by saying I love the first game, like so many others. I thought it was a near-perfect game, at least for me. It had all of the elements, visually, psychologically, thematically, and gameplay wise, that I wanted in a horror experience. It was and still is one of my favorite horror titles.
Layers of Fear 2 plays like someone explained the first game badly to someone tho played a Slenderman game once and grew up watching silent movies. Most of what I liked about the first game is either badly copied or not here at all. The voice acting is decent, yes, but doesn't contribute to the environment. COntrols are a little bulky, but I really only had issue with them during the chase scenes.
Or, should I say, scene. My god, the first chase scene. I went through it five times, because half of it you can't see (black and white only works either in sparse amounts, or as the filter for the entire game. This half-and-half is annoying and just makes it super hard to find your way around. Not to mention you have a tiny window for error no matter how well you run the gauntlet. I mean less than 3-4 seconds.
Overall, this game feels like someone waved a can of La Croix over LoF 1 and then poured it in my breakfast cereal. Never have I asked for a refund so fast.. A perfectly mediocre high intensity psychological horror game.

Full Review:
So Layers of Fear 2 is very definitely a mixed bag. It feels nearly identical to LoF1 thematically which I think is a good thing. It's still the same formula: Long corridors, simple puzzles, rooms changing behind you and LOTS of jump scares. The biggest difference being that there's a LOT more build up between major scares.
LoF1 was basically a scare a minute. Nearly every room had something in it trying to mess with you in some way, big or small. LoF2 definitely adds a lot more filler to space it all out. Even still LoF2 is FAR faster paced than the average walking sim horror game.
There's really not much here that's all that different from the original. They have added enemies that will chase you down and kill you but they're extremely easy to avoid. Like, easier than SOMA to avoid. This does, however, add a sense of constant threat which the original game completely lacked. The end result is that even the smallest of scares are far more effective.
Now, horror is obviously subjective. While I very much enjoyed the original LoF I would not call it scary. For me the horror masterpieces are P.T, Visage, Amnesia and SOMA. LoF2 is not even close to this tier of horror. As with the original it's all about visual flair and loud jump scares. That doesn't automatically make it a bad game. It's just not at all the kind of game I find scary. It is, however, a horrific visual treat. I haven't played any horror games that look like LoF1, Observer [also made by Bloober Team], or LoF2.
Graphics are a HUGE step up over 1 and that's really saying something. This... game... is... gorgeous! Except for the reflections. The reflections behave so weirdly. If you look at any reflective surface and move around the reflection will become disconnected and then completely disappear if you look at it at the wrong angle. Very weird. And while the game usually runs at 4K 60 FPS on my 1080Ti, I've noticed almost every time the frame rate isn't steady there is something highly reflective nearby. Additionally the frame rate seemed to deteriorate as the game went on.
The story... I'm gonna be honest, I wasn't able to follow it very well. I've gotten the general gist but I'm not at all connected to the characters. The story is told in the same way as the original which is by looking at items and pictures. Hope you don't miss any of these items. Probably the games biggest negative is that the ending is very sudden. You know you're on the last act due to the way the game progresses but there's really no build up. There's some cool, visually freaky scares but nothing that says "you're at the end of the game. The\u2665\u2665\u2665\u2665\u2665\u2665is hitting the fan now". You're just moving along, moving along and then bam! Game is over.
Overall I'm absolutely enjoying this game despite very notable flaws. It is a psychological visual masterpiece. It's got some jump scares that are very well earned but not much in the way of more P.T.\/Amnesia style dread.. Disclaimer: Huge fan of the first game, massive fan.
This is not a worthy title in the series.
The story (if you can call it that) is all over the place, there is no sense of what your character is, what they are supposed to be doing, or what is even going on in the big picture of things. You are just thrown onto a boat and off you go, there's no rhyme or reason to anything in this game. It is a mess.
The horror elements just seem randomly thrown in, like the developers were out of ideas and just grasping at straws, trying to throw in as many horror tropes as they could. Little kids, check. Mannequins, check, random quotes, check, deep "spooky" voices, check.
The little bits of things you find around the ship don't seem to be connected either to anything.
To top of it off are several annoying "Chase" situations where you'll have to play a part over and over again til you can get it in order to move on.
Visually, this game is great though, textures are sharp, lighting is great. Sound design is fantastic as well.
Very disappointing stuff, sad to say that Bloober is no longer a dev I can buy games from Day 1 anymore after this mess of a game.. Compared to the first game it really isn't that interesting. The jump scares are sub-par to what they were in the original, and the story line is all over the place. The graphics are amazing, but the lack of true horror makes it a real bummer when wanting that horror feeling. All-in-all this is definitely more of a puzzle game now than it is a horror game. Wouldn't say the game is terrible, but just would not recommend to those of you wanting a similar horror experience as the first game was.. Linear and uninteresting.
The story is a convoluted mess. Listen to audio dialog when finding random items with no context at all, this is not interesting and it takes away from the immersion of the game. You can skip out of these but they will keep on playing as you continue which can sometimes lead to awkward moments when triggered events happen as an audio dialog plays.
Its more of the same over and over. Walk down a hallway, all doors locked except the one the game wants you to proceed through, open door, find a new area mostly the same with random triggers and ambient sounds and potentially "scary" stuff happening. Problem here is its so much of this its get repetitive and predictable after a while and just plain boring.
I will say the atmosphere is great and the visuals are stunning, its clear they put a lot of effort into building these scenes but it can only carry a game so far. Personally I did not find this scary and mostly just got bored playing it. The story did not interest me and found it mostly tedious and bland.
Worst issue I have with this game is the Black and White shader effects taking place at long periods of time. This happens several times in the game and I mostly just wanted to get through them to get back to the normal scenery. This is probably the biggest design flaw in the game - its not a cool feature and takes away from the stunning visuals by forcing black and white.. It physically pains me to say that I think this is one of the most disappointing games I've ever played in my life. I came into this believing that Bloober Team could do no wrong. Layers of Fear and Observer were absolutely amazing (although the DLC for Layers of Fear was subpar, I still believed that was just a slight mis-step. It wasn't absolutely terrible or anything, it just wasn't as good as the main game). Heading into this, I believed this would be a contender for my game of the year. However, it became clear after less than an hour, that this was not going to be a great game. It wasn't even going to be a good game. I would argue that aside from the fact that it runs really well from a technical standpoint, it's one of the least interesting (and most frustrating) horror games I've ever played.
The first game was constantly playing with your head. Whatever you expected to happen (usually) didn't. I still remember all the times I'd turn around and jump from whatever had changed or suddenly appeared in front of my face. There were rats everywhere. We followed a man's descent into madness and we understood. We were there every step of the way through him going completely insane.
This game, doesn't play ANY mind games at all. In fact, other than a few really minor places where it attempts to surprise you, it was quite boring. The parts that aren't boring, are so ridiculously frustrating that I had to stop playing the game multiple times and go away from it for a while and then come back to it. If a game is good, you don't walk away from it. You keep playing it over and over and over again. I couldn't wait for this game to be over. It's so frustrating because two weeks ago I KNEW this game would be one of my favorite games. I really don't understand how they managed to screw it up this bad.
The writing is so unbelievably bad that I have trouble believing ANY of the same writers that worked on Layers of Fear and Observer worked on this game. It's on an entirely different level from those games. It's so bad that if I had been on the team that worked on this, I would reconsider my career. And that HURTS to say. Because before this game, I really believed they could do no wrong. I knew they would hit this out of the park.
Looking back at my time with the game, it's hard to pinpoint exactly what went wrong. I think it's a fundamental issue. The game at it's base, is just not good. The clever mechanics from Layers of Fear are gone. The excellent storytelling, pathing, and observational nuance are completely absent in this game. The story makes no sense - they just threw together a ridiculous story and then tried to tack on some of the mechanics from Layers of Fear 1. But they don't go together. It's like trying to mix oil and water. They don't mix. It's not meant to be. One of the environments in this game repeats like 11 times. It's some of the laziest design I've ever seen in a game. It's like they wanted to get the game out as fast as possible and they just threw a bunch of stuff together and hoped it worked. It didn't.
I'd love to go into more detail but I don't want to spend any more time thinking about this game. It's one of the biggest disappointments of my entire life. I LOVED this studio. I will always cherish Layers of Fear and Observer. But I have no desire to ever play Layers of Fear 2 again and if I had played it for less than 2 hours, I would have refunded it. And that's coming from someone with over 1000 games on Steam.
If you do like this game, that's fine. People will always have a difference of opinion. I love Silent Hill: Downpour. Everyone else hates it. We all like different things and that means we all like different games. However, if you've seen my other reviews and you know that you like the same kind of games as me (and you are thinking about picking up Layers of Fear 2), I would strongly urge you to reconsider.. ===[ \u2764 Audience: ]===

Overview:<\/b> Granted I'm only on the third chapter. The game looks beautiful and plays as you would expect a walking sim game would. It's extremely linear. I remember in some trailer for the game "How you play the game changes your ending". It's too linear to have an impact on your ending - even in sequences where the game tells you that you have a choice to make, it will force you to make the correct decision.
Horror\/Soundtrack<\/b>: Regarding the horror aspect of the game - it fails to build tension in any meaningful way. Sure the soundtrack is decent, but the tension you should feel in a horror game is absent. The 'scares' in the game are painfully boring. They're Insidious<\/i> level annoying and wear thin quickly. - *predictable loud 'scary' noise*
Summary:<\/b> The first Layers of Fear had a decent story because it was about an artist slowly going mad. This game is about an actor on a ship whom you don't really care for because you know little to nothing of his backstory. The story is fairly boring & I'm struggling to keep interest in the game. The characters you hear throughout the game or read letters from, are boring 2-dimensional cardboard cutouts. I wish I could give a neutral review because if you're a casual player, or enjoy cheap jump-scares in moves or games, you would probably enjoy Layers of Fear 2 (nothing wrong with that). But it's too bland & surface level for me to give it a positive review. I'll probably update the review when I eventually finish the game.
