Former special ops agent, the eccentric MacGruber, was long thought to be dead, following the murder of his wife Casey Janine Fitzpatrick during their wedding ceremony ten years ago. MacGruber did not believe in the use of guns, but rather self-made tools and weapons on the spur of the moment with whatever materials were on hand, and did not believe in working off of plans. However, MacGruber is still very much alive and has dropped out of western society to recover emotionally from Casey's murder, recover which he knows he will never be able to do. Colonel Jim Faith is able to locate MacGruber and coerce him out of retirement as MacGruber's arch enemy, Dieter von Cunth, who is thought to be Casey's murderer, has stolen a nuclear warhead, his intended use of it unknown. The one saving grace at this point is that Cunth does not have the codes to launch it. MacGruber's task is to prevent Cunth from using the warhead, either by eliminating him, recovering the warhead, and/or preventing Cunth from getting the codes. Rather than use his dream team of former associates for this mission, he is relegated to a team of three: himself, his former associate Vicki St. Elmo who he has to convince to return to work rather than focus on her stumbling music career, and Lt. Dixon Piper, more typical of the traditional special op member, he who is Faith's choice but who MacGruber hates. Beyond actions by Cunth to carry out his intended use of the warhead, MacGruber and his team face the obstacles of the differences between MacGruber and Piper, the former who is constantly putting his team at risk in his "my way or the high way" attitude. Through it all, MacGruber has to decide if he can love again as his reunion with Vicki brings to the surface their mutual attraction, that love which has always existed on Vicki's side despite being Casey's best friend.
In the Dzhugdzhur Mountains, Eastern Siberia, the criminal Dieter Von Cunth steals a Russian X5 nuclear warhead. Colonel James Faith travels to Rio Bamba, Ecuador, with the efficient Lieutenant Dixon Piper to summon the retired special operative MacGruber to retrieve the X5. MacGruber is considered deceased after the death of his beloved wife Casey by his archenemy Cunth in their wedding. MacGruber teams up with Piper and Vicki St. Elmo and they learn that the evil Cunth intends to use the warhead to destroy Washington D.C.
Suck it, MacGruber. No, really… MacGruber is one of those extremely rare films that starts off terrible and slowly, but surely, gets progressively better. In fact, I almost turned it off once our "hero" comes out as a blatant homophobe. Well, it wasn't just that, the movie sucked up to that point and a little further in the first 20 minutes or so.

Then, something changed…it actually got funnier – I literally found myself laughing and enjoying myself more as the movie advanced. And the addition of the Kristen Wiig character, Vicki, helped a lot and once Val Kilmer's Dieter Von Cunth was fleshed out, it got better. Further, even MacGruber's own homophobia was explained…as it is in real life. (No soap box here, but suffice to say, whatever you hate the most is mostly likely something you are struggling within yourself. I'm not saying he's gay, but…)

At any rate, as this is a spoof (and based on the short Saturday Night Live skit), we have the typical super-human/super-dufus ex-militant who's called back into duty to stop his arch nemesis, Von Cunth and his acquisition of a nuclear bomb on US soil.

Unfortunately for MacGruber, in one of the most hilarious scenes, his band of heavy armed with heavy arms are killed and MacGruber must rely on Vicki and a "young" military guy, Piper (Phillippe). The rest of the movie with them attempting to stop the bomb plays out like an extremely raunchy and male-nude-fest version The Naked Gun series.

My advice: make it through the first third. Forte as MacGruber makes it fun, but Wiig and Kilmer (whom I normally don't like) steal the show. It's almost harmless fun and very hard R…or perhaps that was just the Unrated version I saw. The cast itself was reason enough to attract my viewing attention. With Will Forte, Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wig and Val Kilmer on the billing, all of them bankable scene chewers, what could go wrong? The three first mentioned actors all proved to be wacky and funny on SNL. And the recurring SNL skit MacGruber was the perfect send-up of the popular 80s drama series MacGyver, with Forte as the frenetic MacGruber coolly attempting to defuse bombs with various ordinary items at hand, eg. gum, a comb or a hairpin. Unfortunately, as with so many other SNL skits that were funny on the small screen (Julia Sweeney as the androgynous Pat immediately comes to mind), the big screen with its 90 minute feature length format proved to be a poor medium. MacGruber the film relied too much on shock value and there were too many times where characters were reaching for laughs that just weren't there. There were times where the movie was mildly entertaining. It is a shame there weren't more of the frenetic, "quick MacGruber, in another 30 seconds the water tank will be full and we'll drown" moments where Forte as MacGruber could shine and break them out, Houdini-like, with a pair of shoelaces and Kristen Wig's thong. For anyone who thinks they've just read a spoiler, you haven't. This would have been a funnier movie if there had've been a water tank death trap scenario. I have no desire to see the sequel.
How the hell can you take an SNL skit that runs 90 seconds and stretch it to a 90-minute feature? Sounds excruciating. But MacGruber breaks the jinx by putting the skit in the context of a 1980s action movie and creating its own brand of explosive lunacy.
MacGruber is based on a Saturday Night Live skit of the same name. The skit itself was a parody of the TV series MacGyver (1985) (1985-1992). The screenplay for MacGruber was written by the Saturday Night Live screenwriting team of Will Forte and John Solomon along with American filmmaker Jorma Taccone, who also directed the movie. "Touch and Go" by Emerson, Lake, and Powell is the song that plays during the montage as he checks off the names on his list. This comedy was released rated R in theaters worldwide. In the US, the DVD and Blu-ray disc releases contain this version alongside a longer unrated cut which adds more story and dialogue as well as more spicy material.
