The West coast of Northern America suffers an unprecedented series of major earthquakes in a matter of days, puzzling seismologists, including Dr. Jordan Fisher's team. His maverick assistant Samantha Hill comes up with a theory, which they confirm on site, that a deep tectonic rift links them and is likely to sink most of California into the Pacific. The only imaginable countermeasure are subterranean nuclear explosions. Three succeed, one rather causes a new problem. Meanwhile federal and other authorities as well as various people wrestle with side-effects like landslides and cope with a huge refugees exodus.
An earthquake reaching a 10.5 magnitude on the Richter scale, strikes the west coast of the U.S. and Canada. A large portion of land falls into the ocean, and the situation is worsened by aftershocks and tsunami.
Having lived in California at one point in my life, when I was a child, and having had to take the field trips to the seismology department to learn about earthquakes, it didn't take long for me to look at the science in this and start scratching my head and wondering if they should have made the field trips as well.

I think they were tossed about whether they wanted to make a movie about special effects, and what would happen in such an event, and a movie about the personal involvements that interconnect in such an event - but in the decision as to which to make, they failed in making a good movie about either. Too many people, too many story lines, make the whole story choppy and hard to follow.

What is most disturbing about the movie, and it bothered me the entire movie, was the amateur quality of the camera work. Some of the special effects left a lot to be desired, such as buildings in "aftershocks" that looked like a large crate of rubble on a trolley being shaken, but the camera work was just absolutely poor. Jerky movement back and forth between characters, short, sudden, jerky zooms - both in and out - that serve no useful purpose other than just to have camera movement. I don't know if this was the director's fault, or whomever was responsible for setting up the shot - but they obviously never learned the value of framing a shot, or finding the center of action with the shot. Camera action for the sake of movement is simply just poor movie making. Well its nice to know Hollywood knows so much about Ellensburg....I'm sure the people at Central Washington University(CWU), or as Hollywood says UCW, would love to know we have a great geolab. Although it was nice of Hollywood to put a small town like Ellensburg they should get their info straight. Ellensburg is not exactly a suburb of Seattle as Hollywood likes to imply...so Hollywood get your info straight next time and UCW...come on...figure out what a college goes by just as if you were citing a source...its CWU. This movie needed a lot of help the camera angles were terrible, the music wasn't parallel through the movie, the story line was fakish, and it had a thrown together feeling. Next time you have an idea for a movie try to finish you though before its put into film.
