Adult version of Finding Nemo with gore, violence, depression and cannibalism. Just keep it away from your children except you want them to become a vegan.. This was the first movie I bought on Steam and I'm really not disappointed. Padak touches on some very serious things, do not be fooled by the (very nice) animation and watch it with the family. Unless of course your family is into cannibalism and the cruel realities of life. Then yeah, watch it with them. Though it seems as if the story is only there to portray the "horrors" fish or other creatures may or may not experience while in a restaurants death row, or the supposed wrongs of those working in fish and culinary industries, there are subliminal and important messages throughout the story, such as the significance of hope, sacrifice, and the "tail" (ha me) even taps into the profound and mysterious meanings of life. Kinda silly for an animated movie to do, but it can work. Other than what the movie is all about, it has great music, art, characters, and as I said before, animation. I will now go a little more in-depth for each of those aspects: The music fits very nicely, with certain moods expressed in the songs that make sense with the story. The art shown during the music go hand-in-hand as far as the flow of both together, and the illustrations can be very beautiful. Unlike in a lot of animated movies, the characters aren't bland and cliche really, aside from possibly the rogue fish here and the overly optimistic one there. The real test for their uniqueness I found was trying to rank them in my mind, which I actually found difficult (even though they aren't all the kindest or most antagonistic of characters, which is interesting). The animation of this movie reminds me of how Finding Nemo may have been if it was made in a time with this sort of technology, which I think of as a compliment, as Disney has quite a large budget. The only con I really could have for the movie would probably be that it's all in Korean and requires you to use subtitles, but as this makes a Korean restaurant more immersive, I easliy look over it.. A South Korean Masterpeice! At least, it is if you're a fan of obscure animated films like I am. Borderline a psycological horror, expect lots of gore and intense imagery. The 3d animation is simple, but quickly grows on you as you get sucked into the story and characters. The overall tone of the movie reminds me of other movies, Such as Watership Down, Felidae, and Plague Dogs. Definitely not for everyone, but if the premise seems even slightly interesting to you, I'd suggest grabbing it. It also makes for a very interesting watch with friends, given it's outlandish nature. I rarely have folks over, but if they are even slightly interested in a more somber type of film, I will always suggest Padak.. A superb masterpiece from korean moviemakers! An existentialist animation that analyses life and death, here portrayed in a life of a mackerel fish that ends up in a japanese sushi restaurant. Don't fool yourself: This is not a Finding Nemo rip-off, neither is a children's movie. It is very beautifuly animated, with a very nice soundtrack. It speaks about hope, delusion, existentialism and death. I loved it vey much! Give it a try! You won't regret it! But mind you that has a bit of gore and explicit violence and speaks about mature content. not a children audience. *Editing because dumb me thought It was rental only, have since bought it. Stil it'd be nice to be able to download it. but thats Steam problem.. If youre expecting a Finding Nemo style kids movie, then prepare to be disappointed (though you probably deserve to be shocked for being that narrow-minded about animation involving talking animals, or that anything involving anthro fish must be Nemo related*). To summarize this movie in a nutshell: imagine if the basic premise of Chicken Run (e.g female protagonist want to help her fellows escape into the wild to avoid being eaten by people) was about fish and replace the kid-friendly slapstick with despair and violence on par with Watership Down and Felidae, add in a bit of cannibalism for good measure. Also replace the super happy and optimistic ending with a bittersweet depressing one. I thought the movie was overall decent, if tragic and sad. I only had three problems with it. The trailer is sort of misleading in that it implies that plot would involve characters struggling between an easier life in captivity, or a harsh life of freedom. This was not the case; indeed the fact that living in the wild would likely be short and equally brutal as the restaurant is never addressed. I don't remember even seeing the line from the trailer where the halibut mentions that they'll likely be eaten either in the ocean or in captivity. I felt that would of added a lot more dynamic and tension to the movies plot. I was also confused as to why the fish are okay with eating fish from other tanks, or taking bites out of each others tails is okay, but viewed scavenging on the body of a friend as something horrific. Indeed, despite the violence, the movies plot (aside from a few bits at the very end) felt very flat and, ironically, not very suspenseful. It often felt like it was trudging slowly towards something epic, but it never really does. Also, I wish there was a bit more development on the relationship between Padak, Spot and the Halibut so that way we could become more emotionally invested with them and thus make the movies sadder moments feel stronger. But aside from these few things it was an alright movie, and having genuinely mature animation for older audiences is always refreshing (and no most of the adult comedy that Americans like to refer to as mature for older audiences, is not really mature at all (and usually half the audience is kids anyways). Ive seen family movies with more maturity, and address more serious themes and issues, than many adult animated comedies. Padak was definitely worth the $3 I spent on it. *All that said, if you really want an animated Korean kids film, try Leafie; A Hen into the Wild. But be warned, despite being a kids movie, Leafie is also rather depressing.. If Finding Nemo could be depressing.. My feels have never been so utterly destroyed before.. This video is a beautiful mix of different animation styles with a simple, but powerful premise. While there is some comedy, this is definitely not a lighthearted tale for kids. I rented this video on a whim and ended up a crying mess. I watched this with English subtitles and there weren't any issues.. It's like reverse finding nemo but instead of Marlin finding Nemo, Nemo gets his head cut off and then eaten by Korean people. Will make you feel slightly bad for eating fish.. Such a good movie, maybe one of the best movies i've ever seen, but the end was so sad i was in tears
