About This Game

Dr. Jonathan Banfield, renowned treasure hunter and rabbit has finally discovered the legendary oasis of Egypt: Amshear. Brimming with archaeological artifacts, Jonathan sets out to uncover all that he can amongst the fabled ruins. However, his expedition is cut short when his ex-companion Andre Betancourt shows up to pillage the sacred site.

Armed with only his wits and his ears, Jonathan puts an end to Andre's illegal digging, and continues on his way to discovering the secrets of Amshear. With the aid of his friend, Jack, hacker extraordinaire, Jonathan finds an ancient sarcophagus in the depths of the ruins. But before he can decipher whose sarcophagus it is, Andre shows up and hastily opens it, unleashing an ancient evil, and cursing both himself and Jonathan to die in 7 days.

Jonathan must now collect seven holy grails from around all of Egypt to cleanse himself of the curse of Sehur the First.

I decided to purchase Pharaoh Rebirth+ after thoroughly enjoying Shin Megami Tensei: Synchronicity Prologue (same developer). Pharaoh Rebirth certainly exceeded my expectations.. Certainly worth checking out if you're a fan of metroidvanias.
In terms of plot & presentation veers into silly territory, with cute sprite art that's smoothly animated, and plenty of sarcasm in the dialogue.
In terms of gameplay it controls well, there's small puzzles and twists to the usual mechanics along the way and while a bit on the easier side it still puts up a fair challenge. (Meaning not paying attention will get you killed, but if you do keep your eyes open boss patterns etc. are easy enough to read.). Surprisingly solid metroidvania, of the "mostly linear but you can go back for more items" type. Controls are good, levels are well designed with varied challenges, art and music are good. It's not the longest but it's not short enough you'll feel cheated. Story is campy genre cliches, but the fun kind of campy genre cliches.

Overall would recommend to platformer/metroidvania fans. It's not the best I've played, but it is very good.. totally great game. really high production, great mechanics, endearing characters. reminds me a lot of cave story. feel like it was a little on the easy side but still an incredibly enjoyable experience.. this is an excellent castlevania-inspired game (i'm not using THAT term) with beautiful sprite work somewhat reminiscent of metal slug and a fittingly amazing soundtrack. the gameplay is fine-tuned so that enemies pose a threat without being damage sponges, and there's a strong incentive to explore previous areas as they contain stat upgrades/collectibles/consumables that were previously impossible to access. the game is good at teasing you with inaccessible areas to keep you excited for the next ability you learn. there's always an urge to move on. to top it off, the boss fights are some of the finest in their field.

there are only two downsides, and both of them are levels. one requires you to play as your turtle rival, who has a slightly different arsenal of abilities. it's not an awful stage but it isn't as well-designed as others and kind of throws off the flow. the other stage is almost completely on-rails with the exception of jumping, like the mine cart sections in donkey kong country. i appreciate the attempt at diversity but this stage is a complete slog and the only downright unenjoyable area of the game - why mess with a winning formula?

pharaoh rebirth is a fairly short game clocking in around 8 hours, but with the exception of the two areas mentioned above (well, the turtle level is still fun in its own right) these are 8 solid hours of excellence. this is a no-brainer for $10 and it's baffling that it never caught on like other games in the genre.

B+. I loved this game! It's one of the best action-platformer Metroidvania experiences I've played in years with some nods to Cave Story as well in terms of character and boss design while still keeping it completely fresh and original. The music is fantastic as well. Have fun collecting all those hidden collectibles!
