The year is 2018. There is no crime and there are no more wars. Corporations are now the leaders of the world, as well as the controllers of the people. A violent futuristic game known as Rollerball is now the recreational sport of the world, with teams representing various areas competing for the title of champion. The defending championship team, the Houston team led by the determined ten-year veteran Johnathan E., is looking to repeat as champions. However, Bartholomew, the sinister corporate head, wants Johnathan to retire, even though he is the most respected athlete of his time. Johnathan's rebellious quest will not come out with complications, both for him and his teammates, after he decides to continue playing despite Bartholomew's threats.
In a futuristic society where corporations have replaced countries, the violent game of Rollerball is used to control the populace by demonstrating the futility of individuality. However, one player, Jonathan E., rises to the top, fights for his personal freedom, and threatens the corporate control.
I think this is a better movie than most. Considering the political climate in the 70's, "Rollerball" had alot to say. I do not think the story background of corporate governments is thin, Jonathan's own ignorance to how they function is the theme. No one really remembers how or why, just that there are. And their fear of his popularity brings to mind Orwellian suggestions. Brutish as the ideal maybe, Jonathan's stands for individual freedom, and identity. The world is portrayed as peaceful, then why such a brutal sport? Can there be no serenity without chaos? I believe the great message from this film is that despite all the technological advances, man is still in the cave, fighting for right to survive the next day. Primitive and harsh, despite the calendar date we thrive on some form of bloodsport, a way to rekindle to the long buried past. A world of luxury, paid for in bones and flesh. I think that all of this went into Jewison's direction, America was still living with Viet Nam, Watergate. Jewison's track record is filled with character's like Jimmy Caan's, Pacino, McQueen, Walken, even Harold Rollin's in a Soldier's Story. Jimmy Cann plays the ball kicker like very few actors. Beck was great too, just loose enough to convey the idea of live fast, die young, and leave a good looking corpse. And Houseman was perfect casting, his performance is subtle terror of what Jonathan means wrapped in a blanket of envy. This film is always underated, and if I had a top 100 in would be in it.
I still remember this flick as seen on telee as a kid together with my father, yes, nostalgia. I still knew a few things about it and with the Blu Ray release it was time to pick it up again.

First of all, an excellent performance by James Caan. But seeing it again nowadays it is a strange flick. It takes place in the future and you can see that with the excellent settings used. The story itself is a bit weird and the main reason, why Jonathan E (Caan) has to quit isn't explained at all. The took his wife away from him and the only thing he wants is to see her again but things turn out differently. The rollerball game itself do offer some nasty shots, nowadays it is laughable but back then it was a rather rough flick. Clocking in at 2 hours it is a bit too long here and there and rare things are going on like for example always watching rollerball games at parties or shooting with fire toward trees.

It is said that it is a classic and indeed they made a remake but it isn't for everybody..

Rollerball is a violent sport invented in a future society after a series of devastating corporate wars have left the world's major corporations with a monopoly on basic social services. Energy production, food supplies, water supplies, basic goods & other items are heavily controlled. To keep the masses from revolting, Rollerball was introduced. In the game, players wear roller skates and race around an inclined circular track, attempting to seize a small steel ball & score goals against the opposing team. Players are assisted by teammates who ride small motorcycles that can tow a player to build up speed. Despite being required to wear body armor & helmets, many players are severely injured or killed during matches. Rules change constantly, as in the last two matches depicted in the film where no substitutions are allowed and no penalties are called, even if a player cheats or commits another act of obvious unsportsmanlike conduct. The corporate directorate (a sort of board of directors) felt threatened by Jonathan's increasing popularity in the sport, which they felt may contribute to a rising feeling of individualism among the general population, a concept they were trying to discourage. By providing Rollerball, the corporate directorate hoped that the masses would be sufficiently distracted from the squalor in their own lives to not think at an individual level. Independent thought would lead to revolt and the possible loss of power. The hit United Artists film, Rollerball, opened in Chicago at the McClurg Court Theatre, 330 East Ohio Street, on Thursday, June 26, 1975. The film was rated "R." An ad reads: "Wars Will No Longer Exist . . . But There Will Be Rollerball!"

_________________________________ Rollerball is played by 2 teams over three 20 minute periods. Each team has a dozen players with 9 on roller-skates and three riding motorcycles. A steel ball is shot into a circular arena with an outer and inner zone. One of the teams must recover the ball and then attempt to place it in their goal at the side of the stadium, the ball held in plain view at all times. If the ball strays into the inner zone it is out of play and a new ball is fired. The roller-skaters hang on to the motorbikes to give them momentum and block other players.
