Just finished Runeous: Part One. It's cetainly left me wanting more. I enjoyed it - the artwork is fairly unique and the music is perfect, plus it's free! Took me about 20 - 25 mins to get through. Looking forward to Part Two.. I hate to be the odd man out. But this is the first legitimately negative review for this title.) This free short story is one-part of a two-part plan and is about 30-40 minutes long from my experience (slow reader). Both parts 1 & 2 are intended to be presented in 2 formats each, Visual Novel (or VN) and Animation. Logically, this review is for the VN version of Runeous Part 1. Personally, it took me about an hour to see all paths. To be frank and with all due respect to the team who developed this particular title, I'm not really impressed. Although the story started in a decent manner, the bickering of the two narrators left an awful taste in my mouth. (Why does there need to be more than one narrator? If they don't cooperate, it just falls apart.) However, I may just be spoiled by other VN projects. I personally believe this one missed its mark. PROS: + Great scenery backgrounds + Skip works when you're not in-window + Character art is.decent CONS: - Story feels generic - Narrators constantly bickering - Occassional grammatical errors - Some character portraits are not properly alligned - Lene's portrait when skipping the story had the wrong image (terrified Lene) - No BACK button - Music loops will get irritating - "Skip" is too slow - Character art may not be bad, but still bothers me I respect this small team for developing this title (along with their ambitions to complete the story), however, it's been a negative experience on my part. I can't say whether part 2 would be good or not, but aside from achievements and a free and easy 100%, I cannot in good faith recommend this title. 3/10 A visual novel that just didn't hit its mark.. Even though it is free, going to have to vote thumbs down. I understand what the developers are trying to do - build up some momentum, leave the game on a cliff hanger and hopefully the player will buy Part II when it eventually comes out (. if it ever comes out). However, rather than giving you half a book, you are just getting the prologue. The game takes around 20 minutes to beat, 5 minutes extra to test the extra paths; there are 3 decisions in the game, none of which appear to affect anything other than the 3-4 lines after the choice. The world seems interesting, but way too short/shallow to be invested in any of the characters. The game engine is lackluster, no option to get rid of animations, or to speed up text. There is an option to "skip" but no usual choice between "skip seen before" and "skip all." The background art is beautiful and one of the best I have seen in any VN. A lot of talent there! The character art however, I did not like - bland looking and the faces all look mushy. That is not to say that I can draw any better, because I certainly cannot, but just isn't my style. In conclusion, I hate to be giving bad reviews to free games because there was certainly a lot of effort here. However, it simply isn't substantial enough, even as an introduction to the world. For that reason my recommendation is to pass and check out some of the other free VNs that are more fleshed out.. This short visual novel wasnt really for me. But it's free, Worth it if you're trying out a different genre other than otome. Go for the achievements.. From developer Novel Tea Games, and publisher Lost Fables, comes Runeous: Part One. Released in 2016, this is a casual indie simulation game with a few small achievements. Runeous is a two part story and within part one, we are introduced to the main plot line and the main characters of the story. Taking roughly 20 minutes of game play, Runeous: Part One follows the story of a small group of heroes in a world that has been ruined by the wars of history. Rune stones possess magical qualities in the world of Ceira, and they fuel the world; however, their secrets have long been lost. Humans research them to try and rediscover what they hold. However, Ceira is under a new threat, an evil empire beginning to rise, and Leif must work with a Jacawi - Eme, to thwart the rising. However, not all is as it should be when the fabric of nature itself begins to fall apart. When I first entered Runeous: Part One, I wasnt expecting much at all. Maybe a small, short graphic novel, and based on the art work, that was exactly what I was getting. I had no idea what this game was about before I first opened it, so finding out it was a fantasy game was rather a pleasant surprise. The first thing that caught me eye was the art work. I didnt think the art work was as good as it could have been,; the character designed has worked hard, and thats easy to see but in my own personal opinion, it just didnt seem right. The story line itself was really interesting and I found myself really pulled in. The ending was absolutely spectacular and I cannot wait for the second part of this. Im really disappointed I couldnt find it on the Steam Store already. There are some little things about this game, however, that were rather annoying. For instance, taking so long to go through each speech; as the narrators told us the story, there was a long lapse between each line of speech and that could have been sped up a little bit it was extremely annoying. Spamming space, clicking frantically, etc, would not speed it up. You cannot skip the spaces between dialogue which is something that made me frown quite a bit. The longer it takes to continue the story, the quicker and easier it is for someone to lose interest as someone with attention disorders, Im really lucky I managed to keep myself entertained with the story. At the end of the day, this is a solid 3 out of 5 stars, a few different things could be changed, but Runeous is a good game that holds its own. It does well, and the cliffhanger is absolutely wonderful. I had goosebumps on my skin and anxiety in my stomach, and other than a few technical things, there is literally nothing I can fault about this game. A definite recommendation from me.. Easy 100% / 20min. Even though it is free, going to have to vote thumbs down. I understand what the developers are trying to do - build up some momentum, leave the game on a cliff hanger and hopefully the player will buy Part II when it eventually comes out (. if it ever comes out). For that reason my recommendation is to pass and check out some of the other free VNs that are more fleshed out.. Way to "linear" even for a "normal" visual novel to be considered worth the time. So its all up to if the story is worth the time or not. And I have to say; I am not invested in the characthers at the end of this part one.. I'm recommending this game based on the fact that not only does this one have a lot of potential, with it's artwork being brilliant and it being very solidly written, even if it doesn't immediately grip you, but it's stated that these episodes will be free to play, and hints in that this is the studios first project and more will come. I will be definitely awaiting future projects, and I hope this puts these guys on the map, because they seemed to have worked tremendously hard to release this. I've left my suggestions over in the discussion forum of Steam. The game could use voice acting or at least like a blip blip blip blip sound for scrolling dialogue. The story IS good, and deserves to be presented in a way that is more acceptable and gripping to more people in the future. Thusly, it needs to be quicker in nature, and the music could use being like 5 minutes in length or something, since there's more than enough time for it to play futhur. I recommend finding an orchestral composer for the project, and actors that treat their job like it's do or die, life and death itself. You need samurai actors and actresses! Improvement is needed, but it will be a good project, and I hope to see more from you guys.. Interesting storyline.
