Um. I really wanted to like this game but. Eh. Sorry to have to say this but "Spycraft" is not a retro gem. It is an FMV video game full of minigames. Those minigames, and "Spycraft's" story plot give the player an interesting overview of how The United States CIA spies on other nations and certain groups within other nations that express hostile intentions toward The United States. Some of those games are meant to portray a simplified representation of what, I would assume, are probably much more complicated methods used by real spies in the field to collect intelligence. Unfortunately, the game is very buggy and doesn't provide much in the way of "fun-factor." Spy work is interesting, but there are a lot of books you can find out there written by real retired spies which offer a fascinating look into the secret world of espionage. I would recommend typing the word "spy" on Amazon's search bar and seeing what pops up, instead of buying this game.. I hadn't played this game until it reached Steam, and I really enjoyed it. Bottom line up front: if you can't get past low-res FMV, you'll have issues with this game. If you want some point and click scenes between espionage-themed minigames and a reasonable, if extremely convoluted, plot, then this might be for you. First, this runs in DosBox. Worked fine on Win10 for me, but if you have any issues with DosBox elsewhere you'll want to look into them first. The FMV is also occasionally choppy at their stock cycles and is low-res scan-line video as was standard at the time. The graphics didn't age well, and the action scenes are pretty campy, but it's fun as is. Some of the puzzles are walkthrough worthy, but it gave me two days of entertainment. It's some James Bond level nonsense as far as realism goes, but they really tried to give you the flavor of espionage. I'd happily give it a 9/10, athough you really can't take it too seriously. And it's also linear, although you can complete the steps in any order. The only real consequences I saw were game overs and the last choice in the game, which provides one of two endings. Worth what I paid, although I also grew up with FMVs, so I don't know how many other gamers would enjoy it.. Interesting and unique game, although underrated. I wish there was a sequel. Runs smoothly on Win10.. loved the game when it came out, still nothing to match this as a spy game out there now. really does have the 2 spy chiefs of the day in the game KGB/CIA. I liked replaying the game, dont expect good graphics as its an old school game, its the puzzles and atmosphere that make it a great game.. I thought I would buy it again after playing through it in my younger days. Sure it is low tech compared to today's fare and the puzzles are rather dated. It was still fun, but not like it was way back then. Still, if you can pick it up cheap, and can put up with a game from yesterday with low res fmv then give it a shot.. Great game, loved replaying it as an Old Guy. Lot of interesting reading and puzzles in this old school gem.. Love this game! Brings back a lot of great memories.. I remember this game like it was yesterday. This is how I first applied to the Agency, using this game. I was one of the first recruits to be digitally recruited using the internet. In the mid-90s I was finishing up college finals and getting ready for Christmas break. I was chatting with some of the tech nerds in the basement of the campus library and one of them mentioned that he had been playing a new game in the lab. Said the integration of video with the nypertext novel features was way ahead of its time. Recommended That I see the tech help desk and borrow a copy of the floppy disks and users manuals and get the game myself. I did. 23 years later and I still haven't fully beat the game; however, I did makeit far enough to land a job with the Wizards of Langley. So glad this exists. Trip down memory lane.
