Nuclear explosions force the residents of a New York apartment block to run from the building. However, the explosions force them into a basement. Eight residents are holed up in the building's bomb shelter. They must acclimatise to each other in difficult, cramped conditions.
Survivors of a nuclear attack are grouped together for days in the basement of their apartment building, where fear and dwindling supplies wear away at their dynamic.
Another audience splitter The Divide is worth the perseverance. This is because after the excitement of the opening two minutes there follows 20 minutes of real patience testing in terms of script and sub par acting. Thankfully things pick up from here right until the conclusion.

Make no mistake this is not a feel good movie. The baser side of humanity kicks in as the nuclear strike survivors become programmed into their new underground existence and develop a new hierarchy. Only one of the survivors retains a vestige of the decent side of human nature but near the end he is somewhat predictably accidentally shot in a stand off between the "good guys" and the "bad guys" as the last semblance of order within the bunker collapses.

As for the unexplained - who launched the nuclear strike, who were the no doubt military dudes in the haz suits who sealed in the bunker?. What were they up to testing the kids in the lab?. Who cares? Sometimes its better to have no easy answers - at least then the viewer can experience some of the pain and confusion of the survivors.

In the end the maxim every man (or in this case woman/herself) for himself is throughly trashed in the most satisfactory of endings. Please note that this movie isn't for everyone, and if you are easily disturbed by blood/torture, etc...might want to stay away.

I had waited to see this movie for quite a while til it came out on DVD and all I knew was what was from the previews and trailers. Just watched the movie and felt this needed a first review from me.

I personally thought this movie was brilliant. Though, it is pretty slow at the beginning and lacks profound dialogue and acting. But it improves more and more throughout the movie. I have to say that the acting in this movie is great, despite what other people might say in their reviews. These are really hard parts for actors to portray, but all it takes is looking at the emotions on the actors faces as intense moments occur.

This film displays many foundations of sociology and psychology of the human being. Anyone into these subjects should definitely consider watching This movie left me breathless and most definitely stunned. 9/10 for the genre. It wasn't the best movie ever...but it definitely leaves you with so many emotions and feelings that weren't there before. And I consider any movie that can drastically change you emotionally a great film. So please see this movie if you want a great film experience We wait, from one cringe-inducing, hide-your-face-from-the-screen act after another, to see how much worse the behavior will become.
There are two versions of The Divide. Next to the MPAA-rated "R" version (for disturbing strong violence and sexuality, and for pervasive language) there's also an unrated cut that's featured on the US DVD and Blu-ray. Countries like Germany or the UK only got the R-Rated.
