Review of GLADIADORES (English Translation by Meredith Moore)

A documentary that follows an American football team in Antofagasta, in the second region of Chile, might seem like a rather dry, uninteresting topic, especially to viewers, like me, who don't know much about the rules, rituals or effort this sport requires.

Herein lies the fundamental merit of this audiovisual production, edited and directed by Stavros Tofalos, who successfully manages the principal problems of tackling the process of following a team until the bitter end. The team has the honor of achieving something like glory: triumph on the field and triumph against adversity.

In a formal style that one appreciates, done correctly and accurately –good use of cameras on the field, careful lighting and sufficient audio to capture subtleties of the plays and intimate moments with each player—this film can be considered a contribution in the technical sense, and shows that valuable material exists in what may seem like uninteresting topics.

Maybe the faults are most evident in the final version of the script, where some of the scenes lag or others simply don't add to the building excitement, watching the ascension of a group of young men from all social backgrounds, united purely for the love of a game that isn't exactly popular.

It's evident that Director Tofalos has a lot of material on his hands and doesn't always succeed in conveying the exact emotional atmosphere necessary (some of the scenes seemed excessive) and others seemed barely noticeable, but one appreciates that he never falls into the trap of being obviously over-emotional or trite. On the contrary, if there is something that clearly stands out about this documentary, it's that it grows without unnecessary punctuation without abandoning topics or conventions.

In a couple of scenes, Tofalos reaches the pinnacle of his work when he captures the coach's efforts to get funding which would allow the players to go on to the championship (one notices the register which is neither overly done nor lacking anything), or when he captures the triumph of perseverance in one of the players who finally makes his first goal and turns it into a great, personal feat which both elevates him and gives him dignity.

There are other instances where there could have been more irony and denunciation, most of all when he's on site, recording the reaction of the government employees who couldn't explain the lack of attention of the mayor, for example, or the obstacles the team faced in trying to represent their own city. But luckily, the director was there at the right time, the proof is there, and the viewer is left to take sides or not about the situation with the authorities.

It's these moments that remind us that the real material of the documentary is spontaneous, in capturing and registering the details objectively–with all the limitations that this implies, obviously—and the impact and glory of the images flow out of the actual material, without falling prey to overt manipulation.

Considering the pros and cons, "Gladiadores" is a documentary that presents itself as a well-documented, serious work, although it could use a little pruning, but in no way is it a documentary to pass over. Very much on the contrary, it is a powerful, daring film, with effective treatment of the essential elements that should be highly valued. Elements like intimately acquainting the viewer with the rules of the game and all the peculiarities it entails, and also giving doses of genuine emotion that makes us thankful for the opportunity to revel in the magnificent opportunity to bring us closer to the lives and challenges of others through film.
