The God of Cookery, a brilliant chef who sits in judgement of those who would challenge his title, loses his title when a jealous chef reveals him to be a con-man and humiliates him publicly. As this new chef takes on the God of Cookery's role, the former God tries to pull himself back on top again, to challenge his rival and find once and for all who is the true God of Cookery.
The most renowned and feared chef in the world loses his title of God of Cookery because of his pompous attitude. Humbled, he sets out to reclaim his title.
God of Cookery is a hilarious parody of a number of other great HK films (the gambler series, early Jackie Chan, and "Chinese Feast" style cuisine dramas), though I didn't know that when I first saw it... it's how I got into the genre. Because it's satire is so over the top though, you also start to get a feel for the huge differences in film tabus between western and eastern cinema. Production values are amazingly high, and although they "fixed" a couple of hilarious subtitles in the DVD version, at least you can read them in most scenes. The self referential jokes about english translation and subtitles are still there.

The best of Kung Food! I loved Shaolin Soccer, and keep hoping to find another Chow film I'll like as well. Some I have liked, some I have not, but nothing beats that one.

God of Cookery didn't impress me at all, but it's hard to judge the film fairly, because the English subtitles were inept. I often had no idea what was going on; I think the subtitles must have been made with google translate or something.

This makes it hard to offer a definitive view of the movie. I can definitely say it is not as good as Shaolin Soccer, because that movie had stunning, over-the-top visual moments, and this movie - at least the first half, which is all I could take - had little that compared.

But with better subtitles, who knows?
