When detective Mathias Rivoallan is found murdered by the gang led by the Nigerian Markudi, detectives Jimenez, Aurore, Ouessem and Tony decide to revenge the death of his friend. The vigilantes plot bloodshed, executing Markudi, his brother Bola (Doudou Masta) and the other gangsters in the abandoned building where they are gathered. However, things go wrong when the watchman arrives and the violent gang subdues the quartet and tortures them. Meanwhile, the lookouts of the gang hear explosions, sirens and the weird sound of the rabble.

Despite a plethora of zombie films being made around the world in the last ten years, very few of them are actually any good; I think the last one I really enjoyed was the Spanish REC. Good news, then, that the French have finally done themselves proud with THE HORDE, which turns out to be one of the most exciting - and desperate - zombie films of the last few years.

Don't go here looking for originality, because you won't find it. THE HORDE's storyline is nothing to write home about, and the cast is typical for those of us familiar with French cinema like DISTRICT 13. In essence, a group of gangsters, cops and eccentrics are cooped up in a run-down apartment block and forced to fend off the frenzied attacks of the living dead.

The characters are all hard-ass and the script is littered with tough-as-nails dialogue, but along the way there are some genuinely decent performances, particularly from Jean-Pierre Martins and Eriq Ebouaney, whose initial hostility gradually gives way to a grudging respect. But the characters come second to the direction, which is all about tense, close-quarters combat, and the film-makers don't skimp on the bloodshed either. This is a nasty movie, in which the zombies are vicious man-eaters all the way. There's even time for something new, in the form of some breathtaking hand-to-hand combat battles between humans and zombies which are like something out of THE RAID and just as great to watch. THE HORDE is a great little movie and one I'll enjoy rewatching in future. i saw this at frightfest and it was a bit special, it might be because of the size of the screen (massive) or that it was a packed house, but it could be because it was so good.

a bunch of coppers go to kill off a bunch of gangsters and for no apparent reason, well nothing was explained, the world suddenly goes to pot and there's a lot of mad psycho zombies out to kill and eat everyone.

the coppers and the gangsters form an uneasy alliance and the rest of film is not stop violence, gore and a bit more violence.

these arn't romeros zombies by a long shot, there fast and a single bullet to the head doesn't do much. a shotgun tends to do the trick though.

its rammed full of cool set pieces and the odd bit of humour. (the old guy doing his anti zombie bit with a big axe and an even bigger machine gun is pretty funny.

its french its a zombie film, think frontieres crossed with day of the dead on crack and your near to what this film is like.

god knows when its coming out on general release but make sure you see this at the cinema.
This zombie flick has only been released in a cut version in France, neither the DVD nor the Blu-ray contain the Uncut Version. Right at the beginning three long scenes featuring the character of Jimenez were left out: two on the cemetery and the following one in the alley showing Jimenez beating up a guy. There's no real explanation for deleting this scenes but they can be seen in the bonus material of the French DVD/BD.
