Walter Townsend, an enemy agent working in the U.S., has been allowed to obtain false information that, if believed by his home country, will cause its leaders grave embarrassment (and discredit Townsend). But another spy from Townsend's home country also working in the U.S., George Simpson, tells his superiors that the information supplied to Townsend is false. Because Simpson and Townsend are known to be rivals, their home country sends its most brilliant agent, Stefan Miklos, to determine the truth or falsity of the information Townsend supplied. The IMF's job is to "assist" Miklos in reaching the "correct" conclusion -- while letting him believe that he has determined for himself that the information is true.
Jim Phelps and his IMF team are going to deal with the country's top spy - Stephen Miklos - in this episode entitled "The Mind of Stephen Miklos".

This complex episode tells the story of rival agents - Walter Townsend and George Simpson - that are working against the United States.One day,an information was obtained by Townsend that happens to be a false information.Unfortunately,Simpson tells his superiors otherwise by stating that the information that was obtained was absolutely true and accurate.To verify everything,a top spy in Stephen Miklos was sent to determine the accuracy of the information.Knowing that the information is the truth, Phelps and the IMF try to convince Miklos to arrive at the same conclusion.

Dealing with Miklos is definitely one hell of a mission for the IMF knowing that he happens to be a top agent who sees through everything and convincing him of a veracity of false intelligence is no easy task.The IMF did a magnificent job of accomplishing their mission in deceiving Miklos by convincing him that the information that he obtained is false and that makes sure that he sees through it and believes the opposite.The episode was evidently complex especially during the time the show was on air and it definitely provided a lot of intelligence especially for present-day viewers. I recently went back to the From the Archives site to watch this vintage episode of "Mission: Impossible" on it. Part of me was disappointed to not see much action on the part of the players both regular and guest but there was always the possibility of something going to happen especially when the main villain thinks he has everything figured out when he thinks of all the people he saw and met and remembered them in different places and uniforms. Nice seeing Ed Asner outside of his Lou Grant role in "The Mary Tyler Moore" show as well as Jason Evers outside of the MS3K entry The Brain That Wouldn't Die (he was credited as Herb there). Hope to eventually watch a DVD collection. Lalo Schifrin's theme is still one of the best...
