A rogue Multiverse agent goes on a manhunt for versions of himself, getting stronger with each kill. With only one version remaining, he races against the clock to finish him and become "The One."
There is not one universe, but there are many, which is a multiverse. Supposing you are just one person, there are many other versions of you in the other universes, there are ways to travel, but only a police agency, MVA, can travel only for police procedures. Gabriel Yulaw is a former MVA agent, who killed another version of himself in self-defense. It made the other versions of him stronger. When Yulaw found out about this, he became power-hungry killing the 122 other versions for two years. After killing Lawless and getting captured by his former partner Roedecker and a new MVA agent Funsch, Yulaw managed to escape the prison and is trying to kill his last target, Gabe Law who is a police officer. He is also at Yulaw's strength. Roedecker and Funsch now have to arrest Yulaw before he can kill Gabe. There is a possibility that the universe could die or make Yulaw invincible. After encountering Yulaw for the first time, Gabe thought that it was his split personality, but it wasn't. Will Gabe be able to confront Yulaw before or after Yulaw ruins his life?
certainly not jet li's best movie, but fans of the genre (sci-fu?) will not be disappointed by his fourth hollywood film. 'the one' is fast, funny and entertaining with enough special effects to compensate for it's other deficiencies.

talking of deficiencies, it is impossible having seen this film, not to comment on the performance of english actor, jason statham. anyone who has seen 'the transporter' will have a fair idea what i mean, but please be warned: statham is bad. i mean, really bad. so bad in fact, that his appalling acting (which is fast becoming something of a trademark) very nearly ruins the film.

jet li's performance however, is entertaining as always and the fight scenes, choreographed by corey yeun, allow him to show his versatility as a martial artist, especially in the finale. although, fans of his earlier work may well be disappointed that li's own wonderful martial arts skills are somewhat masked by the computer generated special effects. It would be fair to say that this film is a whole meddly of rip-offs. Mainly an obvious cash-in on the desire of super-powered Neo type bullet-dodging-strong-enough-to-punch-through-walls.

This is probably the first film to make use - to my knowledge - extensive multiple universe but really it's hardly touched on. We only really see one universe properly - which is pretty much ours. This as such invalidates the only really interesting and novel idea in the film.

The rest is just your typical action hero stuff with a few matrix effects thrown in and such. Sure there is punching through steel and fencing with motorcycles but this film never really delivers anything beyond a subpar popcorn film, with the added bonus that it's Jet Li and Jet Li instead of Neo and Trinity.

Really unless you're a big fan of Jet Li on Jet Li action, don't bother with this. Even Matrix: Reloaded or Matrix: Revolutions is preferable. A stunt that fails.
