The city suffers a series of grave arson cases, all announced and executed with masterfully designed bombs by self-stylist Prometheus, 'Purifier of sin'. MacGyver helps old-fashioned fire inspector Earl Stringer, a friend, analyzing the bombs. At the next call, they go in together and Mac tries to defuse the bomb, but it still kills Earl. Mac works on his theory that the arsonist is the same person who set a fatal fire to a café years ago. He finds means and traces, but becomes the living target of bombs without timely warnings.
MacGyver is helping his friend, the head of the Fire Department's Arson Squad, locate an arsonist who calls himself Prometheus. Now his friend's number two has her own ideas which he doesn't think is right. Eventually they find another device Prometheus planted. Mac tries to disarm it but something goes wrong and his friend is killed. His friend's number two is placed in charge of the unit and informs Mac his services are no longer needed. But, after talking to his friend's wife, Mac thinks he knows where to find Prometheus.
