This is the 66th episode of the U.S. war series, "The Silent Service". The series was about the exploits of the U.S. Navy's submarine fleet. Each episode is a stand-alone tale of the actions of a particular submarine. Most of the stories are about actions against the Japanese Navy and merchant fleet in the Pacific. There is also the odd tale from the Korean conflict. The series ran for 78 episodes during 1957 and 1958. The stories were all based on actual events. Some pretty good attention to detail here with the U.S Navy allowing filming on several WW 2 era Gato class subs.

Each episode started and ended with retired Real Admiral Thomas M. Dykers giving a breakdown of the action. Dykers became a writer, producer and technical adviser after leaving the service. He worked on films such as, TORPEDO ALLEY, FLAT TOP, THE FROGMEN, HELL AND HIGH WATER and SUBMARINE COMMAND.

This episode is about the submarine, the U.S.S. "Sandshark". There was no actual submarine by that name in the Navy. The real name of the ship and the personal involved has been changed to protect the privacy of the people.

The "Sandshark" is out on a mission in the South China Sea when she happens upon a convoy of Japanese vessels. The "Sandshark" waits till night and then slips in for the kill. The "Sandshark" manages to sink 5 Japanese vessels before beating a hasty retreat into deep waters. After a refit at home port, the submarine is detailed to pick up several missionary types stranded on an island behind Japanese lines.

The submarine sends three men ashore to pick up the two missionaries. The plan hits a snag when a Japanese Army patrol happens along. There is a brisk firefight needed before the men can grab their religious cargo. The men just barely manage to get the passengers and themselves back to the "Sandshark" before a Japanese destroyer shows up.

The cast includes, Walter Brooke, Sandy Kenyon, Ed Nelson and an early bit by James Drury. Drury would become a television regular with a 243 episode run on the 1962-71 series, THE VIRGINIAN.
