When Tack upsets Zigzag the Vizier, the wizard drags him off to the royal castle, where Princess Yum Yum falls for the bashful boy and saves him from execution. Unfortunately, Zigzag plans to marry the princess in order to succeed her father, King Nod. The Thief, meanwhile, is more interested in gold than love and takes off with the protective orbs topping the palace. Together Tack and Yum Yum attempt to retrieve them in order to prevent Zigzag and the One-Eye army from conquering the city.
Designed in the '60s, this Arabian Nights fantasy uses expressive animation to detail the story of a shy, near-silent cobbler who tries to win the affections of a distant princess. Meanwhile, the entertainingly evil, rhyme-speaking Grand Vizier Zig-zag tries to win the Princess's hand, and wages war on the peaceful Golden City. It's up to a rather odd, unspeaking local thief to set things right by accident.
I watched two version of the movie now. I've seen both the Princess and the Cobbler (the one with voice action on the part of Tack, but none on the part of The Thief), and The Thief and the Cobbler (The Recobbled Edition. Released in 2007 and it's the closest to the original plan for the movie back in the 60's) Though the Princess and the Cobbler has a good deal of scenes cut I felt that they weren't 100% necessary scenes, during the final scene of The Thief and the Cobbler there was too much time dedicated to the Thief inside the War Machine, it got boring and laggy after awhile. Also the childish, whimsical music that featured with his exploits (in The Princess and the Cobbler) in the machine were replaced with more serious music. I felt it killed something. Also Tack's voice was almost 100% gone in the original. He only said the "And I love you" line, but it wasn't his cute voice... it's assumed to be SEAN CONNERY! ( ... Sean Connery is not cute. The voice actor with the younger and shyer voice, I think, was better suited to do his voice.) Also, at the magic hand mountain Thief was able to fly on his first try. I thought it'd be more fun if he hadn't. Also, I was grateful that the witch had plenty of scenes in The Princess and the Cobbler, and that she wasn't just the eyeball in the Arabian Nights version.

It didn't have the songs in it at all, and in removing the songs you removed a lot of Princess Yum Yum's desire for independence. She didn't seem as strong a character of a woman without the songs. I hear that a good deal of people were not fond of the songs, but, personally, I liked them. But that might just be me, I've always had a soft spot for musicals. Also, the girls didn't throw One Eye off the cliff, instead they SAT on him and made him THEIR throne. I liked his death scene better.

The narrator only had a small bit part in the beginning of the movie and the narrator was NOT Tack. Again, just a matter of opinion, I liked that the narrator was Tack reflecting on his adventure as a young man.

Also, the Thief didn't get his hero's ending either. Tack took the balls from him and then the thief just slunk away. Even though Thief is not an amazing PERSON he's still a pivotal character and I thought his chance to present the balls to the king really endeared him...

I have to say the only thing that the Recobbled Edition did better was that there was more, epic background music to be had, especially during scenes where the two mutes were together. But I don't think they made up for it.

I saw a scene from The Arabian Nights version... in that one Tack does way more talking, but it's pointless talking, and even the thief voice acts, but again it's pointless dribbling. That is probably half the reason why it flopped so badly in America! The Arabian Nights was the version released to the US. Also it was released right on the tail of Aladdin, and so the market had already been saturated with it.

I like the Princess and the Cobbler. It isn't the original uncut version, and it's not often considered overly good, but I like it and at least it was way better than The Arabian Nights Miramax version, and it didn't get monotonous like The Recobbled version. One of the most visually inventive animated films of all time, this is sheer delight for the entire family. Brilliant animation, outstanding voice talent, and a charming story, with a very funny musical number and a very satisfying conclusion -- don't miss it.

As of 2016, there has been no word if Disney will restore/finish the remaining 15 minutes of animation on this film. He was walking in the desert and was exposed to the sun so he got a tan. The only logical reason he was pale in the beginning is that he rarely goes outside.
