When the world of the Orcs of Draenor is being destroyed by the evil fel magic that uses life-force, the powerful warlock Gul'dan creates a portal to the world of Azeroth and forms the Horde with members of the Orc clans. He also captures many prisoners to keep the portal open. The king of Azeroth, Llane Wrynn and his brother-in-law, Anduin Lothar are informed by the apprentice of magician Khadgar that he has found fel magic in dead bodies and the king decides to summon the Guardian of Tirisfal, Medivh, to protect his kingdom. Lothar and Khadgar head to Kharazhan to meet Medivh and an ominous shadow points a book out to Khadgar, who takes it and hides. Anduin, Khadgar and Medivh and a group of soldiers are attacked by Orcs and they capture the slave Garona, who is released by King Llane, and she shows them the location of the portal. Garona is contacted by the Orc chief of a clan Durotan that wants to meet King Llane to stop the fel magic. Meanwhile Khadgar learns that the gate was opened with the help of someone in Azeroth. Shall King Llane trust Garona and Durotan, who might be the traitor?
As an Orc horde invades the planet Azeroth using a magic portal, a few human heroes and dissenting Orcs must attempt to stop the true evil behind this war.
The fact that this film currently has a 7.5/10 on IMDb genuinely astonishes me. What we have here is what you get when a film is made by a group with a good budget and absolutely no idea how to make movie.

The scenes are short and disjointed, so much so that comprehending the story line is like being on a speeding train, trying to observe the passing landscape through a hole the size of your fist. Blizzard's story telling has always been shoddy, and this film is no exception.

The special effects are inconsistent. Yeah, the orcs look pretty cool, but so many other effects look as cheap as the guy next door's LARP costume (the night elves standout in my memory as horrendous.)

I'm a long time Warcraft fan (WC2 → WC3 → WoW,) and the references to the games were so thin that it hurt. This is a film with absolutely no subtly. Yeah, that's the murloc sound. Hilarious.

Over the course of two hours, there were very few redeeming qualities. For the most part, it was an absolute affront to the senses and sensibilities. Anyone who appreciates a film for its writing and cinematographic qualities should avoid this film like the plague, or risk being enraged and offended at the butchery Warcraft does to these arts.

If I wasn't with friends I would have walked out of the theater. Warcraft had me hoping it would be the video game movie that would finally be decent if not great. Sadly this film left me more mixed then anything other film this year. Firstly to list the positives I can say this is a faithful adaptation of World of Warcraft so fans will find something to enjoy. The game has very much been brought to life with some impressive CGI work. Also i found some of the characters enjoyable albeit hardly too memorable Toby Kebbell's orc character in particular I very much enjoyed and for me was the highlight. The same however cannot be said for Travis Fimmel's human lead. I'm a fan of Fimmel's work in the show Vikings but here his character is uninteresting and Fimmel does a poor job making us care for him or sympathize for his plight. As I found out he himself didn't even know what World of Warcraft was before being cast and as his first blockbuster leading role maybe he was simply out of his element. The film's effects are commendable and sometimes breathtaking and the visuals were very appealing. I also want to praise this movie for not relying on senseless action and instead relied on its characters which is something video game movies have almost always failed on before. However I have several issues with the film.

The first act was frankly a mess as I felt like I had somehow missed an hour of the film and was being dropped into it halfway. Places and characters fly past with no explanation and the story, while coherent enough, wasn't gripping in the least. It wasn't until the first human v orc fight I began to have fun with the movie and made myself more comfortable in getting to know these characters as the film began to slow down and let me absorb what was happening. For the majority of the film I was having fun but then I realized that this was simply setting up the first part in what I presume to be a series and so the film had zero closure leaving me more embittered by the end. Of course other fantasy films had done this in the past such as Lord of the Rings but unlike those films Warcraft gives us nothing to think on until the next film and with no characters to really care about there is little reason for me to get excited about the future of this series. Warcraft's sequel has the potential to be far better as Im now familiar with the world and characters but I seriously doubt this is a movie that will be revisited in the years to come. While this is a superior video game film it is sadly an average fantasy adventure. So good at making the most outlandish elements of his first two films seem completely credible, Jones can’t find a way to get this cartoony spectacle to soar. His heartfelt approach to the material only underlines the silliness.
It is live-action cinematography with some computer-generated elements (i.e, the Orcs, certain Undead characters, Night Elves, goblins, dragons, Dreadlords, etc.) composited together, but it is generally referred to as the Warcraft Live Action Film. The events of Warcraft movie take place during the 1st orc invasion of Azeroth. Roughly 20 years before the events of Reign of Chaos. At the current time, Prince Arthas wasn't even in his teens and Illidan Stormrage is still locked up underground on the other side of the world. The film begins in the Eastern Kingdom as featured in the First War with the battle between the Humans of the Kingdom of Stormwind and the Orc Clans of Draenor. During the Second War, the fight is still primarily against the Humans and Orcs, however alliances are introduced with the Gnomes, Dwarves, Goblins and Trolls. It wasn't until the Third War that the Humans and Orcs traveled across the seas to Kalimdor, with the Orcs wanting land of their own and the Humans needing to take refuge from their desecrated homeland. Once in Kalimdor, contact is made with the Night Elves and Tauren. The Undead make their first appearance during the Third War in the northern lands of the Eastern Kingdom. The Undead came into existence with both the plague and Arthas turning the Humans of Lordearon, among others, in to The Scourge for his own army to assist the invading Burning Legion. Later they break free from Arthas's hold to become The Forsaken and turning Lordaeron in to their foothold. The Blood Elves (formally the High Elves from the Second War), also don't appear until much later due to a falling out with the Alliance during the Third War.
