A French chef swears revenge after a violent attack on his daughter's family in Hong Kong, during which her husband and her two children are murdered. To help him find the killers, he hires three local hit-men working for the mafia.
In Macau, a family is attacked by three killers and only the wife survives severely wounded. Her father, the French chef Francis Costello, travels to Macau to visit his daughter in the hospital and steals the photos of his daughter, her husband and two children from the police department to seek revenge against the killers. Costello stumbles with the independent hit-men Kwai, Chu and Fat Lok that are under contract with the mobster George Fung at his hotel and he hires the trio to hunt down the killer of his daughter's family. They locate the killers in Hong Kong and they travel to kill them. But they have a surprise when they discover who ordered to kill the family.
The revenge movie!!! Very few things are more done, done, overdone then this tired theme. As understandable desire for vengeance is, it hardly makes any difference. And, so it goes... Another bullet opera, splashes of blood, heaps of corpses for the video game crowd. It doesn't stir up any emotion except notorious adrenaline. But, I guess, who needs emotions, they just slow you down and force you to deal with pesky things, like life and essence of existence. And there is Johnny Hallyday, former rock star. The excessive plastic surgery makes him look like a demented lizard. How can looking like a different species be better than just being old, as nature intended? Oh, I forgot, that's why we have adrenaline - to prevent any logical thought process.
A real good moive! Though dont be fooled, if youre searching for a fast paced hong kong action flick, this it not the right movie. Understand me right, i got a weakspot for oldscool John Woo, like Hard Boiled (1992) and so on (who dont), but this is a quite emotional, slowpaced movie, still it got quite some action, and a lots of shooting, but even the gunfights are slowpaced (though REALLY good). I likied this movie a lot. Further on the dynamics between chinese/french people worked really good as well. Watch it!

And a tip; i watched this movie knowing virtually nothing about the plot, it made the movie even better i felt. I got a feeling the director wanted you to find out more and more about the characters as the movie went along, and not knowing the plot beforehand really improved this feel! More than once does To's grandiose imagism miraculously grant this rote thriller a gleam of the sublime, as in a trash-dump face-off staged as an epic field maneuver, or a campground shoot-out timed to the fickle light of the moon.
