About This Game

Wayward Souls is a randomly generated action-RPG with a heavy focus on story. Play as seven different heroes, all with their own abilities and playstyles. Fight through steadily greater hordes of enemies, as you learn about each character and find out what happened in the cursed tower you find yourself in.

Greatly inspired by 90's era action-RPG's, but with a faster pace and a focus on randomized replay value.

  • Customize each character with their own upgrades and equipment sets that change their movesets and abilities.
  • Over 100 different monster types. Over 300 hats (IMPORTANT)
  • Unique story events for every playable character.
  • Many different areas, room types, rare rooms, encounters, and secrets.
  • Unlockable game modes, including Endless Mode.
  • Heavy replay value due to randomly generated levels, multiple character types, and randomized enemy groups.

Hero Characters and Abilities




Renee uses her mobility to dash through enemies. Her Power Attack is a kick that stuns, with effects depending on her boots. She frequently finds items that let her blind, stun, or poison enemies. All of these let her perform very damaging backstabs.

Equipment and Upgrade Examples:
  • Mirage Dagger randomly gives her short bursts of stealth during her dashes.
  • Giantstomper Boots upgrade her kicks to send enemies flying far back. Flung enemies will then damage and stun enemies they crash into. The Giantstompers also interrupt larger enemies that are stun resistant.
  • Toadskin Cowters poison enemies that hit her, stunning them after a few seconds.
  • Her Low Blow Upgrade permanently makes it so defeating large enemies will make her next dagger attack stun whatever she hits, even if her slash hits multiple enemies.



Blythe combines durability with a big sword that cleaves a wide area. He has a shield to block enemy attacks, and throwing axes for when he needs a faster or more long ranged option than his sword provides.

  • Duskhander Sword replaces his default Power Attack's charging slash with a whirlwind spin, hitting enemies over a larger area.
  • Magebane Gauntlets reduces the damage of enemy spells, while making his throwing axes destroy any enemy spell they pass through.
  • Stonebeard Slab is much more durable than the default shield, but makes him move very slowly when holding the shield out to block.
  • Drakefire Oil is an item the Warrior can use to make all his sword swings emit a traveling wave of flame, for a limited time.



Abbie has long ranged magic attacks that do heavy damage. Her Power Attack uses her staff for shots that are longer range and pierce multiple enemies. In a tough situation, she has limited use spells for both offense and defense.

  • Salamander's Breath Staff turns her magical shots into bursts of flame that pierce even more enemies, but have very short range.
  • Tremor Garb gives her a powerful footstomp that creates a shockwave to stun enemies and destroy enemy projectiles.
  • Manablade Arts lets her summon a sword that does high damage, interrupts enemy attacks, can reflect enemy spells, and has a small chance to stun.
  • The Mage can find powerful one use scrolls such as Fireball or Lightning Bolt, which inflict massive damage and stun to multiple enemies.

I'm conflicted wether I should make this review a positive or negative. There are so many good things about this game, such as the solid controls, amazing soundtrack and charming pixel graphics. But the experience is hampered by an unforgiving difficulty curve that requires you (well, me at least) to grind level 2 for money to purchase permanent upgrades since level 3 is so incredibly hard with enemies that appear right out of nowhere and barely give you any chance to react before taking damage.
I don't normally mind a little grinding, as long as it's fun, but once you've been through all the set pieces a level has to offer for the 20'th time it starts getting dull. Even worse, you'll only be a quarter of the way to purchasing all the upgrades for your character at that point. And there are six more characters to upgrade, so chances are you'll get sick of this game long before you've seen everything it has to offer. By that I mean in terms of the individual characters' story arcs. The levels themselves you'll get sick of during grinding.
This could be easily fixed by making the upgrades cost less. This is not a 100+ hours game, but the devs seem to think it deserves to be.
Personally, this annoys me enough to give the game a negative score, though if you do not mind grinding, then by all means buy this game. It's not necessarily bad, it's just dragged out faaaaaaar more than it should be.. LOVE this game the art is so good my fav is the mage. This game just released and I read some positive reveiws, but I felt like it was missing a lot. It's in early access, but I feel like it wasn't really ready yet. There are almost no sound effects, weapon attacks don't have any impact, and I just didn't enjoy the slow paced outdated combat.

Wait until it gets some more updates.. LOVE this game the art is so good my fav is the mage. I will change the review to positive after the game is improved.

First the good.

This is a kinda roguelike dungeon crawler with a good variety of characters who all work very differently from each other. All have strong abilities which level up after each run and are temporarily upgraded during the runs. The store page says they want to tell a story and they tell it well. Each character has a motive and history which come up to show their relationships with each other and place in the story as events happen. The first two dungeons are fair and challenging allowing you to get good without being frustrated.

Now the bad.

The game's mechanics break down in the third dungeon. All the quirks are made worse by the environment and enemies.

The quirk list.

1. You can only attack in the direction you're facing (Unless you have AoE)
2. All attacks have a windup and most have you stationary
3. You can never attack diagonally
4. All enemies can hit you from all angles

The third dungeon makes these issues worse because almost all the enemies are fast, ride your butt, and have quick windups. The game devolves into kiting enemies just on your butt looking for a chance to stop, turn around, and attack while standing still hoping the enemy will either die or not attack fast enough before you start running again. It's not fun dealing with cheap gameplay like this.

If the game gets better balance allowing for fun and engaging play instead of cheap kiting, I will change the review to recommended.. Better than android version,love this game,love the music,love Abbie!

Dont be fooled by the amount of hours here, I played hundreds of hours on Android, and I still want to play more, there is still content I havent been able to explore. And, here on PC, the gameplay is even better.


10/12 Update:
Ran into some issues with save statues, working on those still. In the meantime, here's the new items for Spellsword and Adventurer, 6 in total.

New update! This one fixes the Stretch Screen option, which was temporarily grayed out during launch.

The next big feature we're looking at is getting achievements in. I also want to start making changes to Paladin, now that we have more feedback on him.

Paladin's story mode is now compete, with a new boss added. We will likely tweak him after some feedback, but this should be the last boss-focused update. Next up: Remaining features and fixes before 1.0 launch!

Continuing twice a week updates until 1.0 Launch out of Early Access, which will be in May. At that point, the price will increase to $15.

This update has the training room change to add Catacombs enemies, along with a bunch of fixes and tweaks. Notably, the coins for the challenge modes increase a lot with this update.

New Update! This one adds new items for Renee the Rogue, and then some fixes and changes. Coming up are the Mage and Cultist items, and also a new way to spend gold. We are also working on a new gameplay mode.

Let me know what you think of the new Rogue items! Depending on feedback, I have some ideas to tweak them.

List of Changes. 4/22 Update - Loot on Minimap, Cheevo Fixes:
This update has a couple features we wanted to get in for awhile, including loot showing up on the map, and some fixes and polish. This update should hopefully cover all of the previous achievement issues, let me know if any are still around.

Going to try to keep twice a week updates going until the 1.0 launch, which is now looking like early May. For the 1.0 launch out of Early Access, we will be increasing the price to $15.

Next up: Character and boss tweaks, some changes to Arena mode, and some additional small features.

Smaller update this time, though we're going to do another one mid-week. We're heading towards our 1.0 launch to exit Early Access, at which point the price of the game will increase to $15. I'll keep doing reminders of this leading up the to launch, so everyone knows about the change.

New update! This continues our work on Paladin, with some Achievement fixes.

Let me know what you think of the revamped first boss fight for Paladin! If this seems good, I will likely use this as a basis for balancing the second and third fights.
