Dex is a hard game to review. It's certain that an awful lot of work went into making this game, and a lot of love went into the crafting such a detailed world, but ultimately Dex fell flat for me.

Graphically speaking, the sprite work is detailed and lovely, and the cyberpunk city of Harbour Prime feels real and lived in. I have no problem with the look of Dex. It's gritty, and neon, and hyper-urban as cyber punk demands. Its facade is rote, but not stale.

I also liked Dex's freedom of movement; traversing Harbour Prime was a breeze & a pleasure. Jumping and rolling and running are all satisfying. It's a small thing, but it really makes the platforming flow.

The story is pretty standard fair—as always, you play "The One" who can safe the world, or doom it. The characters are perfunctory, but none were memorable, save for maybe Raycast. The storyline and characters all function for getting you from one point to another, and never get in the way of the gameplay. While the game does try to hint at grand plans and dark mysteries, it's never exciting, and there's little pay-off to the narrative.

While Dex is a hybrid—one part action platformer, and one part shooter, with a dash of stealth thrown in—none of the action elements are thrilling. I easily got through most of the game by using stealth kills, but it was too easy for my tastes and wasn't as satisfying as in MGS or Tenchu. As for the gunplay—it's just as terrible as you've heard, I will say no more. The few instances where I had to stand my ground were a dull experience of holding the block button while pressing punch, until I could just hack my opponents, stun them & punch them even more. For all of the options that Dex gives you, the fighting and the gunplay are shallow & every enemy can be dispatched in the same manor. The hacking-by-way-of-Sinistar isn't much better—you encounter all of the "viruses" you'll ever fight with in the first hour of the game, & they never get more complex. And the bosses in cyber space can all be dispatched by circling them slowly in one direction and shooting them until they explode. You just spin in a circle while holding the left-mouse button. To be fare, dull hacking mini-games are pretty common; I think the only time I found hacking to be really fun in a game was in "Pony Island."

All in all, Dex is not a bad game. It was clearly made with heart. But, with its dull plot, shallow gameplay, and bland characters, I can't recommend Dex to anyone. Skip it, play something more fun.. i loved the game, after i've finished it i tried to find more like it and found out it was pretty alone in this category. its like Deus ex with a 2D style like flashback ... when's the sequel?. i loved the game, after i've finished it i tried to find more like it and found out it was pretty alone in this category. its like Deus ex with a 2D style like flashback ... when's the sequel?. - Rather simplified Cyberspace fight
- Typical cyberpunk setting with typical 'cyber' and little lore explained

+- A somewhat repetitive and predictable melee combat.

+ Vivid and memorable NPCs, with a good amount of background reading to understand their motives
+ Excellent voice acting! Can't stress enough how good it is.
+ A good atmospheric soundtrack
+ A decent plot with enough twists. Not perfect but gets the job done.
+ Charisma system is very basic but still better than in TES4. Makes you remember what you've heard and said.
+ The game REMEMBERS your choices. If you find a clue, an email, it may not show in your quest log but the game remembers everything, and at the right moment you will always be able to use it.
+ The game tracks your actions and changes the world accordingly (even with such a limited budget). The NPCs know what you've done.

All and all, a good little game to spend a week on that leaves you wishing for more.. - Almost useless ranged weapons

Weekend Update:
Hi everyone!

We’re releasing yet another patch today, with a whole new list of big and small fixes. Let’s get right to it!

- Fixed the dialog bug which caused certain NPC lines to be repeated twice.
- Fixed the scrolling in the Journal and Quest Log menus using a controller.
- Fixed the bug where clicking a Journal entry caused the cursor to skip half the list.
- The controls for Cyberspace can now also be remapped for the keyboard (particularly useful for AZERTY users).
- Fixed the gas valves in the Sewers, so they do not reset their position when you change location.
- Fixed the bug where the pistons would kill Dex upon touching her even when they were not going down.
- Fixed the bug where you disabled the Docks turrets via hacking and they re-appeared when you left and came back.
- Tony’s inventory will not be restocked every time you travel back to him now.
- Fixed some navigation issues with the Trading screen when using a controller.
- Fixed the bug which allowed you to re-open Lily’s safe (and loot it) infinitely (sorry to those who liked to abuse it!)
- Fixed the bug that caused an autosave to trigger just as you loaded a save.
- Fixed the Level 6 Melee skill which didn’t work as advertised (Power Kick is now unblockable).
- Fixed the tooltips in AR describing the effects of skills: they now update correctly as you level up those skills.
- Fixed the bug where destroyed cameras and turrets would re-appear when you re-entered a location.
- Added the Mirrorshade implant to the list of available implants from Dr Niles. This implant allows you to use the item Mirrorshade Cloak, very useful if you like to use stealth (makes you invisible for 8 seconds).
- Linux only issue with the Down/Crouch key being hardcoded to “S”: should be fine now, just make sure you manually assign it to whatever key you want in the Options menu for the change to take effect.
- Added missing icons for secondary skills Charisma, AR and Barter in the Character menu.
- Adjusted dialog text to match audio recording for some characters.
- Fixed missing audio for certain dialog lines.
- And several more minor ones!

We wish you a great weekend, and we’ll keep monitoring your feedback!

Your Dex team. Post-EGX News:
Hi Cyberpunks!

We are here with another development update and news related to Dex, so let’s get into what happened, what is happening, and what is going to happen in our dedicated Kickstarter update: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dreadlocks/dex-cyberpunk-2d-rp...

PS: Dex Beta coming around next weekend!. High Life Update (Early Access Phase 3):
Hi Everyone!

We’re happy to announce a major content update that introduces several new quests and new locations, as well as over ten new NPCs and loads of minor additions and improvements!

We’ve made a new trailer that summarizes the cool new stuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CY90HeZqqQ
Detailed changelog as follows:

 • Four new major quests (with various branching points and outcomes based on player’s decisions).
 • Three new locations within Harbor Prime (Highrise, Docks, and Red Light District), one new location outside the city (Eclipse), and over ten new interior locations.
 • Over ten new NPCs, each with a unique back-story, art, and branching dialogues – and with each NPC somehow involved in the quests and events in the city.
 • Three new enemy types (Armagear Mercenary, Security Guard, Robot) and one unique boss-type enemy (no spoilers here, you’ll have to discover him/her on your own!)
 • New Skill: Charisma (Unlocks new Convince options at important points in dialogues, enabling added solutions to certain quests and situations. Each additional Charisma point gives a higher chance of succeeding with Convince; it also gives a discount for purchases and an increased sale price when selling items to traders.)
 • Skill-level cap increased to six (Each skill can now be leveled up to level 6. And you will really need that for some of the more advanced quests!)
 • Several new mini-games and puzzles (Optional. The puzzles and mini-games are not necessary to progress in the game and/or finish the side quests. They mostly contain some extra reward once discovered and solved.)
 • Loads of in-game commercials (Billboards and commercials for in-game companies. These add spice to the dystopic feeling. Some of them are animated, some are really cheesy, and most are related to something in the real world.)
 • Quest log now gets progress updates (You now get Quest Updated notifications when reaching an important point in the quest. It is easier to keep track of where you stand and to get back into the quest after a break. Plus it just looks more complete and finished.)
 • Emails, PDAs, digital newspaper, and other data sources (Learn more of the back-story for the quests, locations, characters, and corporations through these additional in-game texts. Some of the emails are actually required in order to progress with the quests and find additional clues and leads, but most simply add depth to the story and the world.)
 • New Journal functionality (Similar to the way the Quest log keeps track of your quests, the Journal keeps track of all the PDAs, emails, and valuable data you have read, opened, or somehow acquired.)
 • Two new implants (Cannot be purchased, only received as unique quest rewards for one of the new quests.)
 • New Audio system and over a hundred new or improved sound assets (We moved all of our current sounds to a new audio system. While this may not be very recognizable from within the game itself, it gives our sound designer a lot of new ways to tweak the sounds and adjust their parameters, so this will result in better overall audio quality. Plus we added a lot of new sounds to the new locations, enemies, and events).
 • More elaborate level-up system (The XP and Level Up system is now more elaborate and should enhance the progressive aspect of the game. Originally, you simply got 2 skillpoints per 500 XP. In this more complete solution, the steps between the levels increase in size –500 XP, 1000 XP, 2000 XP – and the skillpoint rewards increase as well; levels 1-9 give you 2 skillpoints per level up, levels 10-14 give you three skillpoints per level up. etc.)
 • Over twenty new items to be found/bought/sold/received (including some new cool art pieces, valuables, quest items, postcards, collectibles, etc.)
 • Many minor fixes, tweaks, balances, improvements, and fixes all through the game.

Enjoy!

We look forward to your feedback!

Dex Team

PS: Since this is really a major update addressing almost every part of the game, please be patient about possible bugs. We tested the new quests thoroughly, but we almost surely missed some stuff (hopefully, only minor issues). Thanks!

Hi all,

This is probably one of the final updates – if not the very final – prior to the actual launch of Dex. All the voice acting is in, all the music, all the sounds, all the content. The game can be played as a whole, from the very beginning to the very end.

However, there are still bits and pieces that could use some extra polish, and there may still be bugs here and there. And that is the core of our message today: We could use your help with testing the game! Any feedback, any bug reports you can offer might affect the final quality of the game upon release. We do not intend to do any radical changes from this point forward, but we want to be able to tie up all the loose ends.

We can also use your feedback as to balancing. Although we did a couple of playtesting rounds, your opinion will be valuable to tweak the game difficulty and deal with possible difficulty spikes in some of the locations, as well as in the individual datafortresses in cyberspace.

Please do not feel pressured to play the game now. If you prefer to have the complete experience, we strongly encourage you to wait. Rest assured – the release of Dex is very close at hand. However, if you want to participate in the final testing and balancing, come join us!

How to get to the Release Candidate build?
As with the Dex Beta build, we decided to publish this build as “Steam Beta” only. This replaces the previous Beta build from March. The very original build from December (without main storyline) still remains the default game new players get to play upon launching the game normally.

If you want to participate in the testing, you need to right-click on Dex in your Steam library, select Properties, go to the tab BETAS and select “Dex – Public Beta” in the drop-down menu! We’ll be on the lookout for your feedback!

Cheers!
Dex Developers

PS: We plan to release the game soon! Stay tuned!. Steam Halloween sales + New Update:

Hi!

Dex is currently 50% off, as part of the Steam Halloween sales.

Additionally, we’re releasing a new update which includes new fixes to controller support for Windows and Linux, thanks to your help and feedback, as well as various other bug fixes.

Happy Halloween!. Dex - Enhanced Version hotfix 2:
Hey everyone!

To celebrate the launch of the Enhanced Version of Dex, the game will be 50% off until Monday, October 12th, 10am PT.

For those of you who have yet to try out our cyberpunk RPG, this is the perfect time to jump in!

We’re also releasing another patch to iron out some of the issues you’ve been reporting, thanks a lot for your feedback!

Enjoy!
Your Dex team

Hi everyone!

After two months of development we re finally coming to you with a new update. Monitoring community forums we were once again able to repair some of the bugs you encountered and we hope the update will improve your future game experience even further.
