A group of people are resurrected from their deaths by a mysterious black ball called GANTZ to combat alien criminals hiding on Earth.
High school student Kei Kurono meets up with childhood friend Kato Masaru one day by chance encounter. As the two are in the subway chatting, Kato notices a homeless man on the subway train tracks. Kato goes down on to the tracks to move the man off the tracks and persuades Kei to help. But soon after helping the man, they are hit by a subway train and killed... or maybe not. Immediately after being hit by the train, the two are suddenly in an apartment from which they can't leave, along with some other people who were also in some near death experience. In this apartment there is also a black sphere called Gantz. Kei and the others have to obey Gantz's rules if they want to live. They have to participate in missions in which the objective is to eliminate aliens. But who or what are these aliens? are Kei, Kato and the others alive or dead?
"Gantz" (2004) is somewhat of a curiosity within its genre. While it boasts an high-octane action reputation built on almost absurd levels of violence, this is not the end-all be-all of "Gantz". The plot is the vehicle of this absurd tumult, revolving around the dead being coerced into forcibly evicting or executing transient aliens, and is itself somewhat absurd even if it is intriguing. The story itself is driven by the character development, however.

The characters are remarkably well written, having many facets to their psyches complete with strengths and flaws. Early on, the anime begins by exploring the Bystander Phenomenon (many people watching another in distress, though nobody helping) and Groupthink/Mob Mentality through an interesting usage of the Protector Archetype. Best of all, the characters, particularly Kurono Kei, are dynamic.

Though it is easy to get lost in the exaggerated violence, apathy, and cruelty which weave in and out of the storyline, this ultimately serves as a vehicle for age-old philosophical quandaries, though you have to look through the Tarantinoesque bloodshed to see them. Chief among the questions raised, are: "Is life truly sacred?" "Is it kill or be killed?" and, "What, if anything, can one person do to change the world?" While the viewer may make his or her own conclusions to these questions, the director still hasn't given his answer yet, forcing the public to wait for "Gantz" Season 2.

This anime contains adult themes including violence, nudity, and profanity. Not recommended for children. Without a doubt, the best Anime-series of the history.... It overcomes a lot to the Sleeve of which comes, and it is centered more in the feelings and reactions from the human being to the end. That nobody! The blood and the sex (only a little) that can be seen in this series, it doesn't mean that it is one of the typical ones Gore Anime-series in the one that alone there are violence and destruction.... it is worth, here there are them, but they are alone a mere excuse to explain the true intentions of this it Anime-series. The main character's evolution (Kei Kurono) it is bestial, it passes of being somebody to the one that alone he cares him same and what concerns him, to be somebody that fights for their survival and that of the other ones mainly, with a desire of being overcome incredible. There are characters that although they are not the main characters, they mark the course of the history, as for example Masaru Katou that is the one that will make discover Kurono the importance of some things of those that until then, he/she didn't think that they were important... Without a doubt, the one Anime-series it is a faithful reflection of the current society and of the raw and unforeseeable that can end up being the own death!.. And the most important thing, this Anime-series it hooks as any other one, it is impossible to see an I surrender and not to want to know that it will happen later... Because we are outlined to the sphere Gantz like an enigma with hundred of hypothesis for their answer.... Summarizing, I wait that some day this great one Anime-series it is taken to the cinema, because it would be a very guessed right election! Greetings to all and I repeat, without a doubt, the best Anime-series of the history (it should see it everybody, because it stimulates a lot to think... hehehe) Good-bye
