I should have written a review on Gravel sooner, but considering that I just finished playing the DLC episodes, I guess its either now or never. Gravel is what happens when you take a racing game developer, in this case Milestone, who is known for mid-budget sim racers, and give them the Sega Rally IP. I'm kind of joking there, but this game seriously does feel like a younger cousin to Sega Rally Revo from a few years ago. In my opinion this one is up there with Moto Racer 4 in terms of racing games where I wasn't expecting too much but hoped for the best, and was pleasantly surprised. It seems to me that Milestone is just on an upward trajectory in terms of quality, and now that they're using Unreal Engine 4 it seems a lot easier for them to pump out multiple competently made racers each year. This is definitely the case for Gravel, with multiple varied and interesting locales to race in. This also provides some fun race types too, like Cross Country racing where it's just pedal to the floor as you cover miles of treacherous terrain in just a few minutes. There's also Stadium races, which are very claustrophobic and tense, where you have to make your overtakes count or you'll never get past anybody. I only have a few complaints. The AI is wildly inconsistent. Some stages are tense while others are a pushover, and yes I was on Very Hard difficulty. Some other reviews also mention having technical problems trying to play the game, and in my case back when it launched there was a weird bug where I thought my save was corrupted and I couldn't even start the game, but a few days later they had that one fixed. My advice is try the demo first. When I compare Gravel to Sega Rally, I'm not kidding. These cars have very arcade-based handling models, kinda like an in-between of that game and Forza Horizon, and you might not know if you'll even like it if you don't try the demo beforehand. If you go in expecting that and skip the demo, just refund if you have any technical problems and pick it up on another platform, because I think Gravel is enjoyable enough that it's worth playing, definitely for arcade racing fans. Also, to Milestone, 3 things if you ever make a Gravel 2: Props for the effort in terms of creating your own festival aesthetic that runs through the single player career mode, but the announcer can get repetitive, particularly on championships where you stay on the same location for multiple back-to-back events. The announcer needs more personality overall, maybe a catchy 'Game Over' jingle if you finish the career. Maybe not, but I think it would be pretty amusing. Whoever came up with the DLC where you drive tanks and Humvees needs special praise. Just brilliant stuff that I wish was in the career more than the one episode.. If you want a new Sega Rally, then that is your game!. Great fun little arcade racer and a beauty to look at, but only worth it if you get the Ice and Fire DLC. You can't have a great Rally Racer without fantastic snow themed race tracks.. Awesome game, nice graphics, physics and overall gameplay, nice car modeling and also stages, totally recommended.. My rating is 5.5 / 10. Advantages: * Very casual driving style reminds me old Sega Rally; * Amount and variety of tracks, locations, environment; * A lot of vehicles to choose in several different classes; * Nice weather and conditions effects (rain / night). Disadvantages: * Graphics could be more realistic and refined; * CPU intelligence could have been better; * Online mode is indigent / underdeveloped.. This game is massively underrated - great fun, great graphics, great multiplayer if you invite friends.. Great racing game!. Please, avoid this game. After so many patches, framerate hitches are not fixed. Graphics are worse than Dirt 2 and framerate is not good. Physics are inconsistent.. Game seems OK however I cannot calibrate my G27 wheel. When trying the menu jumps around erratically, I can't select items properly which leaves me trying to play with very twichy steering. Turning the wheel 90 degrees results in hairpin turning.. Pretty solid and fun Arcade-racing Game with good Graphics. My only concern is the Soundtrack which doesnt really fit in. Some licensed Songs with a mixture like the Motorstorm Soundtracks, and this would be a perfect game. But yeah, so u have to turn down the game music and use the Steam-Player or Spotify or so.
